Abstract

This study delves into an analysis of depression portrayed in Jay Asher's novel Thirteen Reasons Why, with a focus on the protagonist, Hannah Baker. The aims of this study are twofold: to discern the type of depression experienced by the protagonist and to elucidate the impacts of this depression as depicted in the novel. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the analysis seeks to vividly describe and interpret the subject matter. The findings of this study reveal that the protagonist's depression falls within the category of severe depression, characterized by symptoms such as suicidal thoughts and actions. Furthermore, the analysis uncovers several impacts of the depression, including self-blame, feelings of inferiority, and persistent thoughts of death. The protagonist harbors self-reproach for negative events affecting her life and others, while also grappling with feelings of inferiority stemming from instances of bullying, betrayal, rape, and other traumatic experiences that mar her reputation. These experiences ultimately contribute to her belief that death is an escape from her overwhelming depression. By shedding light on the depiction of mental health, specifically depression, in this literary work, this study provides valuable insights. In conclusion, it underscores the importance of recognizing and addressing severe depression and its profound impacts.

Abstract

This research examines the Dutch colonial government's efforts to suppress the actions of Minke, the protagonist in Pramoedya Ananta Toer's novel House of Glass. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the study analyzes words, phrases, and sentences in the novel that indicate colonial attempts to hinder Minke’s activities. The methodology involved qualitative data collection focused on identifying events that reflect the colonial government's interventions. The analysis centers on two key aspects: Minke's actions, which include spreading nationalist ideas, organizing movements, leading the SDI (Serikat Dagang Islam), and using speech and writing as tools for resistance. The findings reveal that the colonial government employed various strategies to curb Minke's influence, including surveillance and reporting, legal restrictions and extrajudicial measures, exile of prominent figures, property confiscation, and rumor-spreading. These efforts underscore the colonial regime's reliance on military force and the loyalty of indigenous officials, highlighting its fundamental weaknesses due to a lack of democratic foundations.

Abstract

This study investigates the life struggles experienced by the protagonist in A Sky Full of Stars by Nara Lahmusi, focusing on her journey toward achieving personal dreams while simultaneously addressing familial obligations. The research aims to analyze the internal and external factors that shape the protagonist's hardships. Internal factors include her perfectionism, strong sense of self-priority, and inner ambition, which drive her personal goals but also contribute to emotional and psychological pressure. In contrast, external factors such as economic limitations and societal expectations impose constraints that complicate her efforts. By examining the interaction between these two dimensions, the study reveals how the protagonist's development is influenced by the dynamic tension between individual aspiration and external reality. The findings suggest that the complexity of her struggle lies in the convergence of personal desires and external demands, which not only affects her decisions but also frames the broader thematic structure of resilience and self-determination in the novel.

Abstract

The study analyzes Judge Wargrave’s psychological mechanisms of self-justification in Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the analysis identifies Wargrave’s self-justification, defense mechanisms, and manipulative behaviors as strategies to rationalize his cruelty. His sadistic obsession and obsessive ambition reveal the complexity of moral reasoning behind his actions. The study contributes to understanding human rationalization of unethical behavior through a literary-psychological lens. The analysis was carried out by categorizing some information into two themes of diccussion. The first theme is the protagonist’s three actions to justify his cruel act: self-justification, self-defense mechanisms, and manipulation. Then, the second theme is the protagonist’s two reasons to do cruel act: sadistic obsession and insane ambition. The results of this study indicate that Judge Wargrave uses various psychological mechanisms to justify his cruel actions. By looking at the psychological and literary context, this research provides an understanding of human nature and behavior, which shows the psychological complexity of the protagonist to uphold justice in an unethical way.

Abstract

William Golding's Lord of the Flies (1954) presents a profound exploration of human nature under duress, centering on the collapse of social order and the descent into primal savagery. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method to conduct a character analysis of the novel's protagonist, Ralph, focusing on the intrinsic qualities that define his struggle for survival and the preservation of civilization. Through a close reading of the text, this paper identifies and examines four cardinal traits—leadership, charisma, organizational prowess, and civility—that constitute Ralph's character. The analysis demonstrates that these traits are not merely descriptive but are the fundamental engines of his resistance against the antagonistic force, represented by Jack, which embodies chaos and violence. The findings reveal that Ralph's struggle is multifaceted: it is a physical battle for survival, a psychological fight against despair, and an ideological conflict for the soul of the community. Ultimately, this paper argues that Ralph's characterization serves as Golding's central argument for the fragility of civilization, which must be consciously and courageously upheld through rational principles, democratic leadership, and moral fortitude, even in the face of overwhelming barbarism. His survival is a testament to the resilience of these values.
