Abstract

Lecturer performance is shaped by both personal abilities and institutional factors. While traditionally assessed through the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, performance expectations now extend to administrative and technological responsibilities, particularly in developing academic ecosystems. This study investigates the direct and indirect effects of competence, leadership, academic culture, and technology mastery on lecturer performance, using data from 410 lecturers analyzed with Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling. The results show that competence is the most influential factor, exerting a strong direct effect on lecturer performance. Leadership, academic culture, and technology mastery also demonstrate direct relationships with competence, with academic culture and technology mastery indirectly influencing performance through competence. However, leadership does not significantly affect performance either directly or indirectly. These findings emphasize competence as the key determinant of lecturer performance, mediating the effects of institutional and technological factors. The study highlights the importance of strengthening lecturer competence and fostering supportive academic environments, while suggesting that leadership alone is insufficient to drive performance improvement.

Abstract

Lecturer performance is a central factor in improving the quality of higher education, as it reflects the ability of educators to fulfill the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. Previous studies have often measured lecturer performance using reflective indicators, but limited research has examined performance through formative indicators, particularly in the context of private universities. This study aims to determine, analyze, and measure the direct and indirect effects of leadership, academic culture, competence, and technology mastery on lecturer performance. The research employed a quantitative approach using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). A total of 410 lecturers from private universities in Jambi Province were selected as respondents. The analysis results showed that six of the ten proposed hypotheses were supported. Academic culture, technology mastery, and competence had significant direct effects on lecturer performance. Furthermore, academic culture and technology mastery demonstrated significant indirect effects on performance through competence. In contrast, leadership did not show a significant direct or indirect influence. The findings highlight that competence has the strongest impact on lecturer performance, with its effectiveness enhanced by supportive academic culture and technology mastery relevant to contemporary educational demands.

Abstract

This article develops and qualitatively examines a conceptual model of environment gradation—defined as patterned differences in environmental quality, resilience, and stewardship across neighborhoods and communities—by theorizing how environmental awareness mediates three antecedent conditions: low socioeconomic circumstances (hereafter “low society economic”), negative environmental attitudes, and community culture. We synthesize recent literature (last five years) and present an interpretive, multi-site qualitative design to illuminate mechanisms through which awareness translates structural disadvantage and cultural scripts into situated practices. The study integrates perspectives from value–belief–norm (VBN) theory, social cognitive theory, and environmental justice scholarship to explain when and how awareness facilitates (or fails to facilitate) pro-environmental behavior under constraint. A comparative thematic analysis, supported by interviews, focus groups, walk-along observations, and document review, identifies four cross-cutting pathways—knowledge gaps, risk salience, social identity and norms, and structural friction—through which environmental awareness either amplifies or buffers the effects of economic precarity, apathy/fatalism, and local cultural logics. We contribute: (1) a definition and operationalization of environment gradation at community scale; (2) a mediated model that clarifies the role of awareness amid resource scarcity; and (3) actionable implications for municipal programs that combine economic relief, culturally grounded communication, and community-led stewardship. We conclude with a 15-study synthesis table (2019–2025) and recommendations for future mixed-methods testing of the proposed pathways.

Abstract

The sustainability of educational institutions amid technological disruption, regulatory changes, and increasingly intense competition depends substantially on their ability to manage human capital strategically. This study aims to analyze the effects of human resource planning and compensation on the sustainability of educational institutions, with work engagement serving as a mediating variable. The study employed an integrative literature review by identifying, evaluating, and synthesizing 16 relevant scholarly articles published within the last five years. The reviewed articles comprised 13 studies published in nationally accredited SINTA journals and three studies published in Scopus-indexed international journals. Literature searches were conducted through Garuda, Google Scholar, and Scopus using keywords related to human resource planning, compensation, work engagement, and institutional sustainability. The selected literature was analyzed thematically to identify patterns and relationships among the principal variables. The findings indicate that strategic human resource planning contributes to institutional sustainability through accurate workload allocation, competency-based recruitment, career development, succession planning, and improved operational efficiency. Fair and competitive financial and non-financial compensation strengthens employee retention, motivation, and organizational commitment. However, the effects of these managerial practices on institutional sustainability are not always direct. Work engagement, as reflected in vigor, dedication, and absorption, functions as a central psychological mechanism that transforms supportive human resource policies into productive behavior, innovation, loyalty, and extra-role performance. This review concludes that work engagement plays a crucial mediating role in the relationship between human resource planning, compensation, and the sustainability of educational institutions. Educational leaders should therefore adopt an engagement-centered human capital management approach that integrates transparent career planning, equitable compensation, employee well-being, and participatory communication.
