Abstract

The process of translation is not as easy as it seems. In fact, it is much harder. The translation result must fulfill certain criteria namely accuracy, acceptability, and readability. During the process of translation, the translator surely encounters some difficulties or barrier. Therefore, this study aimed to find out the students’ strategies in overcoming the translation difficulties. The method of the research was a descriptive case-study. The subject of the research was 10 students of English Education Department at Universitas Majalengka. The data was collected from the translation test, questionnaire, and interview. Most of the data analysis of this research was conveyed in non-statistical analysis. However, the researcher provided data to see the percentage and frequencies to support the research. The results showed that the students encounter difficulties in 1) translating words that are not in dictionary; 2) translating ambiguous words; 3) translating long sentences; 4) translating phrases; 5) translating complex sentence; and 6) translating idioms. In translating idioms, 50% used literal translation, 30% used discursive creation, and 20% used established equivalence. In translating ambiguous words, 90% used modulation, and 10 % used literal translation. In translating phrases, 40% used reduction, 20% used discursive creation, 10% used established equivalence, and 30% used generalization.

Abstract

A novel is present as an effort to tell readers about the cultural values of a particular society. Likewise, the novel Pulau by Aspar Paturusi tells the values of the courage of the Buginese-Makassarese man. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to gain an in-depth understanding of the values of the courage of Bugis-Makassar men in Aspar Paturusi's Pulau novel wholly and entirely. This research uses a qualitative approach with a content analysis method. Data were collected through repeated and in-depth reading of the novel. Furthermore, recording, coding, identification, and classification are carried out. The data are analyzed and interpreted through a deep understanding and abstraction of the society that is told in the novel. The research findings show that in the life of the people of the 70s, the values of courage for Buginese-Makassarese man, which is one of the values in the Buginese-Makassarese philosophy of life, are highly guarded, maintained, and upheld. For Buginese-Makassarese man, courage is identity, pride, honour, and authenticity. The implications of the results of this research are expected to be continuously embedded in the current and future generations as a form of existence of a good life during life's difficulties.

Abstract

Keterampilan membaca permulaan mempunyai peran penting dan pondasi awal dalam keterampilan berbahasa, memahami semua pelajaran, serta kemampuan menyampaikan informasi (bentuk tulisan dan lisan) khusunya untuk peserta didik kelas rendah (I-III). Dalam pelaksanaannya, terdapat peserta didik yang memiliki kesulitan dalam membaca permulaan. Kesulitan membaca ini menjadi penghambat pada proses pembelajaran membaca selanjutnya. Penelitian tentang analisis kesulitan membaca permulaan ini dilakukan pada peserta didik kelas III SDN Burujulwetan IV. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan kesulitan membaca permulaan peserta didik kelas III di SDN Burujulwetan IV. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan yaitu observasi, wawancara, catatan lapangan dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan kesulitan dalam membaca permulaan yaitu kesulitan mengenali huruf, penghilangan atau penggantian huruf, kesulitan membaca setiap kata, kesulitan membedakan huruf vokal dan konsonan, kesulitan menggabungkan huruf dan suku kata menjadi kata, belum memperhatikan tanda baca. Faktor penyebab kesulitan membaca permulaan yaitu kurangnya minat belajar membaca, rendahnya motivasi peserta didik pada saat proses membaca, kesulitan untuk dapat menyampaikan pendapat dalam bentuk lisan atau tulisan, dan menganggap proses membaca merupakan sesuatu yang sulit dilakukan.

Abstract

Quizizz is an online assessment tool as a fun multiplayer classroom activity that allows all students to practice together with their computer, Smartphone and I Pad. The main purpose of this research was to find the effect of implemening quizziz in the discourse classroom of Universitas Majalengka. The population of this research were semester four studens of English department, and the samples were 22 students. This research belongs to pre-experimental research and one group pre and pos test design. It described about a study that cast about the effect of giving treatment of using quizziz in single group only.A pre-experimental research was conducted by comparing the means of the participants’ scores in both pre-test and post-test. The analysis figured out that there was a significant improvement, proven by the paired t-test analysis.The p-value 0.00 was less than alpha 0.05. This research concluded that quizziz was effective to assist the students to learn grammar in written discouse.After implementing quizziz, most of studentsfound that were very active to answer the questions which provided by researches, and more concentrated on the topic. And the results of the questioners shows that the students displayed the position attitude for quizizz as a online teaching and assessment tool during the Grammar in Written Discourse class.

Abstract

Penggunaan media pembelajaran yang tepat dapat mampu memperbaiki proses pembelajaran sehingga meningkatkan hasil belajar siswa. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat pengaruh media pembelajaran berbasis video terhadap hasil belajar dan respon siswa dalam pendidikan bahasa inggris. Metode dalam penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan desain penelitian one sample pretes and postest desain. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada siswa SMPN 1 Palasah Kecamatan Palasah Kabupaten Majalengka. Kelas yang diambil adalah kelas VII-A tahun pelajaran 2021/2022. Materi yang diambil adalah Greeting And Taking Leave. Pengolahan data dilakukan dengan cara melaksanakan tes yang diberikan untuk mengukur pemahaman siswa dan respon siswa. Analisis data dilakukan dengan cara melakukan analisis data secara kuantitatif, untuk uji hipotesis digunakan uji parametrik yaitu uji paired sample t test. Berdasarkan analisis data maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat pengaruh media pembelajaran berbasis video terhadap hasil belajar siswa pada mata pelajaran pendidikan bahasa inggris. Respon siswa positif baik terhadap respon media pembelajaran dan respon terhadap pembelajaran yang dilaksanakan oleh guru.

Abstract

Literasi berhubungan dengan kapsitas siswa untuk menerapkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan dalam mata pelajaran kunci dan menganalisa, mempertimbangkan dan mengkomunikasikan secara efektif seperti yang mereka identifikasi, menafsirkan dan menyelesaikan masalah dalam variasi masalah. Adanya budaya literasi menjadi sebuah upaya dalam menjaga peradaban. Sudah selayaknya sekolah mengaplikasikan sebuah program yang berkaitan dengan budaya literasi. Pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk menerapkan budaya literasi pada siswa agar minat baca mereka dapat meningkat. Metode kegiatan pengabdian ini menggunakan metode sosialisasi melalui kegiatan penyuluhan. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan di SMPN 3 Leuwimuncing dengan jumlah peserta sebanyak 284 siswa. Kegiatan pengabdian budaya literasi berjalan baik dan antusias. Dalam kegiatan ini para siswa memberikan sebuah gagasan dan konsep lewat literasi yang sarat akan ide dan inovasi yang luar biasa, diantaranya mereka membuat sebuah konsep yang menarik tentang literasi berupa “Pohon Literasi” kemudian dari kegiatan Gerakan Literasi Sekolah (GLS) yang dilakukan oleh para siswa setiap hari sabtu semakin meningkatkan minat budaya literasi sebagai upaya meningkatkan minat baca.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop flashcard media for introducing the culture of Central Java. This study also used development research (R&D), which was carried out in two trials, namely the one-to-one trial and the small group trial. The subjects in this study were to get to know the culture of the Central Java region, while the objects in this study were 10 students. The data were collected using guidelines in the form of observation, interviews, questionnaires and documentation. The analysis used is qualitative and quantitative data analysis. The results of this study indicate that the Flashcard media developed through a series of trials and validations is declared feasible. The results of the one-to-one trial get a percentage of 87.50%, and the results of the small group trial get a percentage of 83.60%; both categories are very good or very decent. Therefore, based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that Flashcard media is appropriate for use in learning to introduce Central Java regional culture to students.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low learning outcomes of elementary school students in learning English. This research aims to develop Android-based mobile learning teaching materials to support English language learning in elementary schools and improve student learning outcomes. This study uses Research and Development (RD) research using the Borg and Gall model, with the research sample being 5th-grade students of public elementary schools in West Java Province. Product validation tests were obtained from material, language, practitioners, and design experts and practitioners. Furthermore, the practicality test was obtained from the teacher and student response questionnaires throughout the learning process. Meanwhile, the effectiveness test was obtained through a limited trial using an experimental pretest-posttest control group design. The output of this research is to produce an application program for Android-based mobile learning teaching materials. Based on the study results, it can be concluded that Android-based mobile learning teaching materials are valid, practical, and effective for learning in elementary schools.

Abstract

In today's globalized world, the increasing need for English language ability has highlighted the necessity of good language acquisition and communication abilities. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a viable aid in the field of education, including language acquisition, as technology advances. This study does a literature review to investigate the function of AI in the development of communication skills in English language learners. The goal of this research is to look at the existing research and literature on the use of AI-based technologies in English language learning environments. The essay opens with an overview of artificial intelligence and its possible uses in education. It then looks into the various methods in which AI might help English language learners strengthen their communication skills, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The findings of this literature review suggest that AI has the potential to significantly enhance English language learners' communication skills by providing personalized and interactive learning experiences. However, further research is needed to explore the long-term effects and optimal integration of AI in language learning environments. In conclusion, this article highlights the transformative role of AI in English language education and its potential to address the diverse needs of language learners. By understanding the current state of research and exploring the opportunities and challenges presented by AI in language learning, educators and policymakers can make informed decisions to harness the benefits of AI technology and maximize its impact on developing effective communication skills among English language learners.

Abstract

This article discusses character education through hybrid learning based on local wisdom to develop students' potential. The concept of character education today should not only focus on universal normative values, but also need to accommodate local wisdom that exists in the student's social environment. Hybrid learning is a learning approach that combines face-to-face classes with online learning. This learning is the right alternative in the effort to develop students' potential, because it can provide opportunities for students to learn independently, optimize the use of information and communication technology, and can build children's character growth. This research found that hybrid learning based on local wisdom can help students in developing their character, such as self-confidence, work ethic, and creativity. The results of this study are expected to contribute and guide educators to enrich learning methods and integrate local wisdom in character learning.
