Abstract

This study investigated the impact of learning styles and learning models on students’ critical thinking skills and self-efficacy in chemistry, with a focus on atomic structure and fundamental chemical laws. The research design employed was a quasi-experimental 2×3 factorial design with 108 tenth-grade high school students. The independent variables were the learning model (Problem-Based Learning/PBL and direct instruction) and learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic). In contrast, the dependent variables were critical thinking skills and self-efficacy. Data were collected using the VAK learning style inventory, a validated critical thinking test, and a self-efficacy questionnaire. Data analysis employed two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey HSD post hoc tests. The results revealed that both learning models and learning styles significantly impacted students’ critical thinking skills. Students with kinesthetic learning styles performed better in critical thinking than those with visual or auditory learning styles. However, learning styles did not significantly influence self-efficacy, suggesting that students’ confidence is more strongly shaped by mastery experiences, positive feedback, and social support. The PBL model significantly enhanced both critical thinking skills and self-efficacy, highlighting the value of collaborative and contextual learning activities in developing higher-order thinking and motivation. A significant interaction was observed between learning styles and learning models, with a notable benefit for visual and kinesthetic learners in terms of self-efficacy. This study acknowledges the fundamental limitation of the VAK framework, as empirical evidence for its validity remains weak; hence, interpretations should be made cautiously. Theoretically, the findings support Bandura’s social cognitive theory, which emphasizes that self-efficacy and learning outcomes are shaped through active engagement and authentic experiences. Practically, this study suggests designing adaptive PBL approaches aligned with learners’ diverse characteristics to optimize both motivation and confidence in chemistry learning. Keywords: learning styles, problem-based learning (PBL), critical thinking skills, self-efficacy.

Abstract

Students' learning habits have changed dramatically due to the rapid development of digital technology, especially among digital natives. However, many teachers still rely on traditional learning theories such as behaviorism and cognitivism, resulting in a disconnect between instructional approaches and students’ learning preferences. This study explores the conflict between established learning theories and the actual learning behaviors of digital native students in secondary schools in Palu City, Indonesia. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through in-depth interviews with five teachers and seven students, alongside classroom observations and documentation. Thematic coding analysis revealed a significant pedagogical gap: while students prefer interactive, technology-driven, and self-directed learning experiences, most teachers continue to use one-way, teacher-centered instructional methods. This mismatch limits student engagement and reduces the overall effectiveness of the learning process. The findings suggest that current pedagogical strategies fail to align with the characteristics and expectations of digital native learners. The study concludes that to address this challenge, educators must shift toward constructivist and connectivist approaches that integrate digital tools and platforms. A reflective transformation in teaching practices is urgently needed to bridge the gap between theoretical frameworks and the practical demands of learning in the digital age.

Abstract

Stoichiometry is a fundamental concept in chemistry that requires students to coordinate symbolic calculations with submicroscopic representations of particles and reactions. However, previous studies consistently show that students often rely on algorithmic procedures without developing coherent particle-level reasoning, leading to persistent misconceptions. This representational gap remains a major challenge in Basic Chemistry instruction. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effectiveness of audiovisual-supported Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in enhancing students’ submicroscopic representational ability in stoichiometry using a two-tier diagnostic approach. A quasi-experimental design with a posttest-only comparison was employed involving 33 undergraduate students enrolled in a Basic Chemistry course. Participants were divided into two groups with equivalent initial ability distributions: an experimental group receiving PBL integrated with audiovisual media (n = 16) and a control group receiving PBL without audiovisual support (n = 17). Students’ submicroscopic understanding was measured using a two-tier multiple-choice diagnostic test assessing both response accuracy and particle-level reasoning. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, diagnostic category profiling, and effect size estimation. The results reveal that the experimental group demonstrated substantially higher levels of coherent submicroscopic representation and significantly lower misconception rates than the control group. Learning gains were consistent across all stoichiometry subtopics, with particularly strong effects observed in relational and inferential tasks such as particle ratio interpretation and limiting-reactant reasoning (Cohen’s d = 1.41). These findings indicate that audiovisual-supported PBL effectively facilitates students’ transition from procedural problem solving to meaningful particle-level understanding. The study underscores the importance of integrating representationally rich instructional media and diagnostic assessments to promote deeper conceptual learning in stoichiometry and chemistry education.

Abstract

This quantitative study examines the impact of a teaching practicum, integrated with Lesson Study, on the pedagogical competency of 93 pre-service science teachers in the Pendidikan Profesi Guru (PPG) program at Universitas Tadulako, Indonesia.  This study is a quantitative survey using purposive-stratified sampling (N = 93 PPG teachers). The data relied on self-assessment questionnaires, risking subjective bias. The intervention included iterative Lesson Study cycles (Plan–Do–See–Reflection). Practically, the results support LS-based practicum improvement, but generalization is limited to similar PPG contexts and regional settings. Data were gathered using self-assessment questionnaires and bolstered by Lesson Study, using a validated 5-point Likert-scale instrument that was aligned with the four phases of Lesson Study (Plan, Do, See, Reflection). The findings supported H₁ and rejected H₀, indicating a high level of general pedagogical competency (M = 3.62, SD = 0.45).  Plan (M = 3.67) and Do (M = 3.65) phases showed strengths, especially in ICT integration and conceptual clarity, while See (M = 3.55) and Reflection (M = 3.58) phases showed relative deficiencies.  Regression analysis revealed that Reflection ratings significantly predicted overall competency (β = 0.32, p < 0.001, R² = 0.28), and repeated-measures ANOVA validated significant phase differences (F (3,276) = 4.82, p = 0.003, η² = 0.05). The results demonstrate how well Lesson Study promotes evidence-based pedagogical development, particularly through iterative reflection, and provide empirical evidence in favor of its broader implementation in Indonesian PPG programs to improve science teacher training in areas with limited resources. This study contributes theoretically by operationalizing PSCST-based pedagogical competence within a Lesson Study framework.

Abstract

In higher education, scientific literacy is still a significant difficulty, especially when instruction focuses on procedural knowledge without including moral principles. The purpose of this study was to create and examine Bulletin-Integrated Character Education (BICE) as a teaching tool to improve and gauge students' scientific literacy. The requirement for educational materials that simultaneously promote character development and higher-order thinking makes this research urgent. In order to produce verified educational media, this study used a Research and Development (R&D) approach based on the Hannafin and Peck paradigm. According to expert validation, the BICE media was highly reliable (Cronbach's ? = 0.88–0.92) and valid (CVI = 0.92–0.95). Strong dependability was also shown by the scientific literacy test (? = 0.92). Students who were taught PBL–BICE fared better than those who were taught PBL alone, according to inferential analysis, with a significant effect size (d = 1.12). Conceptual literacy was a strong predictor of multidimensional literacy, according to correlation and regression analyses (r = 0.71; ? = 0.48). These results suggest that in order to foster advanced scientific literacy in higher education, character-based media should be incorporated into problem-based learning.

Abstract

Digital transformation is increasingly influencing English literacy education in secondary schools; nonetheless, differences in technology utilisation and its effects persist among institutions. This study investigates the correlation between students' preferences and the frequency of digital learning methodologies and technology integration in the advancement of English literacy. A quantitative descriptive–correlational cross-sectional design was utilised, employing a 20-item Likert questionnaire. The population consisted of senior high school students in Palu City, Indonesia, with a sample of 469 students from five schools chosen via purposive and convenience sampling methods. The results show a very significant link between Group 1's choice for digital methods and Group 2's impact on technology integration and literacy (r = 0.872; r² ? 0.761). The total visual correlation is r = 0.918. The average perception score was M = 76.89 (SD = 9.23). These results show that basic digital skills have a big impact on literacy outcomes. This means that teachers need more training in digital skills and schools need better infrastructure to facilitate long-term changes in education.

Abstract

The global scientific education community is recognizing that students' success in challenging subjects such as chemistry is contingent not only upon cognitive capabilities but also on psychological readiness to confront academic challenges. This study seeks to implement a diagnostic evaluation of learner mentality to characterize students' readiness to confront challenges in chemistry education and to discern essential psychological factors that facilitate or impede adaptive engagement. The study concentrated on evaluating five aspects of learner mentality: persistence, self-confidence, challenge orientation, feedback responsiveness, and emotional regulation among undergraduate chemistry education students, aiming to yield data-driven instructional implications. The urgency of this research is underscored by the persistent disparity between students' conceptual proficiency and their psychological readiness to navigate complex, abstract, and cognitively demanding chemistry content. If teachers don't know how students are mentally preparing for class, they might only deal with surface-level academic problems and ignore deeper emotional and motivational problems that affect students' ability to stay engaged and bounce back. The results show that most students (69.7%) were either Challenge-Ready or Highly Challenge-Ready. The mean score for Feedback Responsiveness (M = 3.90) was the highest, and the mean score for Emotional Regulation (M = 3.51) was the lowest. There were strong links found between persistence and challenge orientation (r = 0.45) and between self-confidence and emotional management (r = 0.38). These findings indicate that enhancing self-confidence and emotional regulation should be prioritized. Subsequent research should investigate intervention-based methodologies to enhance psychological readiness in conjunction with conceptual chemistry education.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the level of cultural acculturation among various ethnic groups in Palu City in relation to the deepening of Islamic moral values within a multicultural Muslim society. The main focus is to understand how interethnic cultural interactions influence the integration of Islamic moral values in both family and community life. The research employs a descriptive quantitative approach using survey techniques through questionnaires distributed to residents from five dominant ethnic groups: Kaili, Makassar-Bugis, Javanese, Gorontalo, and Minangkabau. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques and visualized through bar chart mapping. The findings reveal that the Kaili ethnic group demonstrates the highest level of cultural acculturation and Islamic moral values, particularly in cultural interaction (90%) and integration of Islamic values (88%). The Gorontalo ethnic group recorded the lowest scores, possibly due to a strong attachment to their native culture. A positive correlation was identified between cultural acculturation and the internalization of Islamic moral values. In conclusion, the greater the degree of acculturation with the locally Islamized culture, the deeper the integration of Islamic moral values in social life. This research underscores the importance of a multicultural approach in fostering a harmonious and morally grounded Muslim community.
