Abstract

This research was motivated by the importance of text readability in supporting elementary school students’ reading comprehension. The purpose of this study was to describe the readability level of sixth-grade elementary school children’s narrative texts using the Fry Graph Formula. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with children’s narrative texts serving as the data source. The data were collected through documentation techniques by selecting five discourse samples. Each discourse was analyzed by calculating the number of words, sentences, and syllables, which were then converted into 100-word units according to the Fry Graph procedure. The results of the study indicated that the readability levels of the texts tended to be above the sixth-grade elementary school level. Of the five samples analyzed, none of the discourses matched the reading ability level of sixth-grade elementary school students. All texts were categorized at higher grade levels, indicating that most of the texts were still difficult for sixth-grade students to understand. Therefore, teachers were required to provide guidance and additional explanations to optimize students’ comprehension during the learning process. These findings were expected to serve as a consideration in selecting reading materials that are appropriate for students’ reading development levels.

Abstract

Text readability is a crucial aspect in determining the effectiveness of teaching materials, particularly at the elementary school level, which requires a match between reading difficulty and students' cognitive development. This study aims to analyze the readability of five story texts in thematic textbooks for grade IV elementary school students using the Fry graph method. This study employed a quantitative descriptive approach with an analysis technique based on counting the number of sentences and syllables in a 100-word sample text. The results showed that the texts' readability varied, ranging from grades IV to VI. Two texts were at the grade IV level, one text was in the grade IV-V range, and the other was in the grade V-VI range. This variation indicates that the text difficulty level in thematic textbooks is not entirely consistent with the reading ability level of grade IV students. This finding indicates that although some texts are appropriate for students' developmental levels, some texts are more complex and potentially hinder comprehension. Therefore, an evaluation of the development of teaching materials is needed to provide more attention to readability aspects in a proportional and hierarchical manner.

Abstract

This study aims to measure the readability level of parable texts in Indonesian language textbooks for grade III elementary school semester 1 using the Fry Graph Formula. The texts analyzed include five story titles, namely Jumping Rope, Failing Again, Bahri the Little Fisherman, Enter Keywords, and My Turn to Help You. The approach used is descriptive quantitative by calculating the average number of syllables and the number of sentences per 100 words, then the results are plotted on a fry graph to determine the estimated grade level of the reader. The results of the analysis show that the readability level of the five texts varies, only the story "Masukkan Kata Kunci" is in accordance with the grade III readability level. The story "Lompat Tali" is at level 2, the story "Gagal Lagi" is at level 8, the story "Bahri Nelayan Cilik" is at level 7, and the story "Giliranku Membantumu" is at level 8. These findings provide an overview for teachers and curriculum developers that not all texts in textbooks automatically match the reading ability of students in their class. Careful selection and guidance are required so that the texts used truly support students' literacy process optimally.

Abstract

Currently, there is a widespread decline in morals among elementary school children, such as bullying, dishonesty, and a lack of respect for teachers. This literature review aims to identify strategies, challenges, and implementation of strengthening character education in elementary schools based on recent research. The method used is Systematic Literature Review (SLR) based on Kitchenham theory (2004) from Keele University. According to Kitchenham's measures include: Defining research questions using PICO framework (Population, Intervention, Compison, Outcome), developing a documented review protocol, conducting comprehensive literature search in various databases, selecting studies based on protocols, assessing the quality of studies, extracting and synthesizing data and reporting transparently and can be audited.. The results of the study indicate that character education in elementary schools is most effectively implemented through three main strategies: integration into thematic learning based on the Pancasila Student Profile, habituation through school culture, and teacher role models. The main challenges identified include the negative impact of social media on student character, limited teacher competency in integrating character into learning, and inconsistencies in values between schools and families. Effective implementation requires synergy between schools, families, and communities (the Three Centers of Education), as well as strong leadership support from school principals. This study provides practical recommendations for teachers, principals, and prospective PGSD educators in implementing character education holistically and sustainably.
