Abstract

The Baduy Luar community, as one of Indonesia's indigenous groups, is struggling to preserve their cultural identity amidst the rapid pace of modernization. This article delves into how the unique social structure of the Baduy Luar, rooted in traditional values and customary leadership, serves as a bulwark against the erosion of their cultural heritage. This research examines the central role of traditional leaders such as the Puun and Jaro in balancing the demands of modernity with the preservation of ancestral values. Through an in-depth analysis of the community's internal dynamics and interactions with the outside world, this article reveals the adaptive strategies adopted by the Baduy Luar to confront the challenges of globalization. Furthermore, this article discusses the external challenges faced by the Baduy Luar community, including natural resource exploitation, infrastructure development, and the impact of tourism. By understanding the complexities of the issues faced by the Baduy Luar, this article offers policy recommendations that can support efforts to preserve their culture and promote sustainable development in the region.

Abstract

This article discusses the analysis of the technological and living equipment of the Baduy Luar community, an indigenous community in Banten Province, Indonesia. This research aims to identify and understand how traditional technology, such as agricultural tools, food processing systems, and daily equipment, contributes to the sustainability of the lives of the Outer Baduy community. This research uses a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods to understand in depth the technological systems and living equipment of the Outer Baduy community. This method was chosen because it is able to explore cultural meanings and social practices in the context of everyday life. The research location was carried out in the Kanekes area, Lebak Regency, Banten, with a focus on villages inhabited by the Outer Baduy community. Data was collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews and documentation studies. The research results show that the Outer Baduy people rely on simple, environmentally friendly technology, which not only meets their daily needs but also preserves their cultural values. Apart from that, the adaptation of modern technology is hampered by local wisdom and deeply held social norms. These findings provide an important perspective for developing policies that respect local wisdom in facing modernization.

Abstract

This study explores the informal education system of the Baduy community, which emphasizes cultural preservation and harmony with nature, rooted in family and traditional practices. Using qualitative methods and an ethnographic approach, this research reveals that education in the Baduy society centers on the transfer of customary values, practical skills, and community responsibility through direct practice. Findings highlight the central role of families in knowledge transfer and the community's resistance to formal education as a means of safeguarding cultural identity against modernization. The study underscores the importance of local wisdom-based approaches to inclusive education while offering recommendations for hybrid educational models that honor traditional values while maintaining modern relevance.

Abstract

This research aims to understand the art system of the Baduy community through a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods. The researcher explores the cultural values, artistic practices, and functions of art in the daily life of the Baduy people. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results of the study show that the art system of the Baduy community is closely related to customs, spirituality, and environmental sustainability. Art in the Baduy community not only functions as a cultural expression but also as a medium for teaching life values.

Abstract

The Baduy tribe, located in Banten Province, is one of the traditional communities in Indonesia which has a unique social and community organization system. This research aims to describe in depth the social organization system of the Outer Baduy Tribe, including the organizational structure, the relationship between the Kajaroan in Outer Baduy and the government, as well as the social structure. The main focus covers aspects of social life ranging from marriage, death, to customary sanctions for violations of customary norms. This research approach uses a literature review method by analyzing various literature sources, in the form of books, journal articles and other documents relevant to the study of the social organization of the Baduy Luar community. The research results show that the social organizational structure of the Outer Baduy Tribe is divided into certain levels with roles that are defined by custom. The relationship between the Kajaroan in Outer Baduy and the government is coordinative but still maintains their cultural independence. The social order is regulated by binding customary rules, starting from simple marriage procedures, sacred death ceremonies, to the imposition of customary sanctions for violators of norms as an effort to maintain community harmony. It is hoped that this research can contribute to the wider community's understanding of the rich social and cultural systems of the Baduy Tribe, as well as becoming an important reference for efforts to preserve traditional values ​​in the modern era. Thus, this study provides new insights into the sustainability of local culture amidst changing times.

Abstract

The Baduy community is one of the traditional groups in Indonesia which still maintains its traditions and customs. Divided into two large groups, namely Inner Baduy and Outer Baduy, this community has a religious and ritual system that is an integral part of their lives. This religious system is rooted in the Sundanese Wiwitan belief which teaches harmony with nature, respect for ancestors and devotion to the Creator. Ceremonies such as Seba Baduy, Kawalu, Ngaruat, and Seren Taun become media for expressing the spiritual, social, and ecological values ​​of the Outer Baduy community. This article aims to describe the religious system and religious ceremonies of the Outer Baduy community based on recent studies, with a focus on philosophical values ​​and their relevance in modern life. This research uses a qualitative approach based on literature studies from various scientific sources in 2022-2024. The research results show that the traditions and rituals of the Outer Baduy community are not only cultural heritage but also contribute to the preservation of universal values ​​that are relevant to the challenges of the times.

Abstract

One important way to maintain the cultural identity of a community is to maintain its language. In the midst of the challenges of modernization and the influence of the Indonesian language, this article discusses how the Baduy community maintains language as an important part of their local wisdom. This research conducted qualitative research involving observations and interviews with jaro and members of the Outer Baduy community. The results show that Sundanese Baduy language not only functions as a means of communication but also functions to maintain traditional values and beliefs. But the Outer Baduy community, which interacts more frequently with the outside world, is starting to become aware of external influences. Oral teaching passed down from generation to generation, customary prohibitions, and the Puun's role as custodians of tradition are strategies for maintaining the language. According to this research, language not only functions as a symbol of identity but also helps people live together in traditional communities. These findings will provide insight into efforts to preserve other languages in the area.

Abstract

This study explores the livelihood systems and economic activities of the Outer Baduy community in Lebak, Banten, Indonesia. Known for their rich traditions and cultural heritage, the Outer Baduy are navigating the balance between preserving ancestral values and adapting to modernization. Their livelihoods primarily depend on traditional agriculture and handicrafts, such as weaving Baduy textiles, which are not only functional but also carry cultural significance. The research employs a qualitative case study approach, collecting data through in-depth interviews, participant observations, and document analysis. The findings reveal that while the Outer Baduy community benefits from economic opportunities in tourism and local trade, they face challenges in maintaining their cultural identity amidst external influences. This study underscores the community's resilience in integrating sustainable practices and preserving cultural integrity in the face of modern economic demands.

Abstract

The Baduy community, located in Lebak Regency, Banten Province, Indonesia, represents an indigenous group that has preserved ancestral traditions amidst modernization. This article explores the social organization system of the Baduy community, including its hierarchical structure, customary norms, leadership roles, and interactions with the outside world. The social structure, led by the Puun as the spiritual leader and the Jaro as the administrative manager, is central to the community's continuity. Customary norms, known as "pikukuh," regulate all aspects of life, from social relations to environmental conservation. Despite facing modernization challenges, the Baduy community, particularly the Outer Baduy, demonstrates adaptability without losing cultural identity. This article adopts a descriptive approach, referring to recent literature and research, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the harmony between tradition, spirituality, and ecological sustainability in the Baduy community. The study highlights the Baduy community as a model of how traditions and local values can serve as a foundation for sustainable community management in the modern era.

Abstract

The Baduy people, an indigenous community in Lebak, Banten, Indonesia, preserve a unique traditional knowledge system rooted in their cultural and spiritual beliefs. This article examines their knowledge systems across agriculture, environmental management, health, and social norms. The Baduy's practices emphasize harmony with nature and sustainable living, as reflected in their farming techniques, forest conservation efforts, and use of traditional medicine. Drawing on expert insights and field studies, this study highlights the resilience and relevance of Baduy knowledge in modern times, offering lessons for sustainable development and cultural preservation. The Baduy people, an indigenous group residing in the Lebak region of Banten, Indonesia, embody a unique cultural identity characterized by their adherence to traditional values and practices. This article aims to explore the knowledge system employed by the Baduy, highlighting its historical context, cultural significance, and the indigenous wisdom that has been passed down through generations.
