Kata Kunci: Peliyanan, Subaltern, Ruang Seksual, Pascakolonial THE OTHERING TO THIRD WORLD WOMWEN IN SEXUAL SPACE IN PLATEFORME NOVEL’S BY MICHEL HOUELLEBECQAbstractOne of the most issues addressed in a novel is othering. Abstract

The racial discrimination and oppression toward Black community in the U.S. have become the main concern in American society. Several factors make Black community live with fear and struggle to be accepted in American society. Racial discrimination is a complex phenomenon, which is the accumulation of variables within Black community’s lives. Race, class, and gender are factors that intersect with one another, resulting in continuous racial discrimination toward Black people in the U.S. Black literature explores how Black people encounter oppression and discrimination; and how they fight against them. One of Black young adult literature is entitled The Hate U Give (2017) by Angie Thomas. This novel explores the life of a high school student named Starr who lives within two atmospheres, a black neighborhood and a predominately white school. Through the protagonist’s point of view, this novel explores how the intersection of race, class, and gender are connected and creates continuous racial discrimination in the U.S. Intersectional theory by Patricia Hill Collins is used to investigate how the variables are connected and results in the systemic racism toward Black community. The finding shows how Black people are dealing with racial events in their daily lives, struggle to fight inequality, and attempt to voice their experience through Black activism.

Abstract

The subjects that participated in the production of meaning in the literature included authors, publishers, and illustrators. The aim of this article was to investigate the role and the exercise of the power of these different subjects in trying to construct teenager identities through teen’s literature in different eras of Indonesia. Different teenager literature was analyzed since The New Order to the Reformasi Era of Indonesian political rule. This research used the Critical Discourse Analysis method, which examined all social and cultural products as discourse. Discourse in this context was the construction that contained within it components that require attention. The analysis shows that there is an environment of gender, middle-and upperclass production, consumption, and the reproduction of narration by those different subjects. All of them compete because they have different agendas. However, they also negotiate and work collaboratively through their own narrations, because they all have the same objective of acquiring financial benefit.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the constestation of French writers’ ideologies during the era of World War II through their works. The primary data sources were “Le Mur”by Sartre, “L’Etranger” by Albert Camus, and “L’Attente de Dieu” Simone Weil. On the one hand the writers play roles as ones telling the world through their fiction, but on the otherhand they have active roles in positioning their believed ideologies. The study employed the Critical Discourse Analysis method. The discourses emphasize that God is viewed as personal, social, historical experiences contested by Sartre, Camus, and Weil in their works. They discuss God using different perspectives. The findings show that God isphilosophically positioned at the levels of being existent and non-existent, present and absent, and active and passive. Sartre and Camus are on the same line when talking about God’s absence in human existence. Meanwhile, Simone Weil, who is very religious, views that God is concretely present in human life.

Abstract

AbstractThis study attempts to explore the positioning of women in literary narratives, particularly in the construction of the space known as “nation”. In discussions of nation and nationhood, these two concepts are frequently attributed to men. Questions of nationhood are also considered masculine, as nationhood is itself narrowly defined as nationalism or defense of the state. In such discussions, women are always  excluded, as they are constructed quite differently from men. The narrative of nation is a complex one, in which men and women are differently constructed. Narratives of women are frequently and continuously reproduced, both by men and by women. If, in a social context, narratives of women are continuously reproduced, what are they like in literary narratives that construct the nation? What type of narration of women is constructed? Why is such a construction forefronted? This study specifically explains how women can be continuously present in literature.

Abstract

Increased immigration, especially from Muslim-majority countries, has been broadly debated in French socio-political life. Frictions have been common between two groups: Muslims and non-Muslims who identify themselves as ‘defenders of secularism.’ At the same time, however, hybrid strategies have emerged in which Muslims and non-Muslims have sought to culturally and socially adapt themselves. Through a review of online French media published between 2017 and 2020, as understood using social constructivism, this study explores the groups’ construction of hybrid identities. Discourses were analyzed to identify their ideological schemes, utterances, references, and arguments, with linguistic analysis facilitated by NVIVO software. Analysis shows that the hybrid discourses of non-Muslim ‘defenders of secularism’ have been more prominent than those of Muslims. Furthermore, the narrative tendencies of these hybrid discourses indicate that non-Muslim groups have sought to promote diversity in religious practices in France, while Muslim groups have sought to integrate themselves into broader French society.

Abstract

This paper starts with the question: Why do Protestant churches in Asia have different levels of accommodating women in leadership? By taking two case studies - the Evangelical Church of Vietnam (ECVN) and the Toraja Church in Indonesia that have similar starting points but different levels of transformation regarding women’s leadership, the paper aims to explore how the cultural, political, and religious contexts of these churches are different and how they contribute to the different process of church transformation toward women-inclusive leadership based on both primary and secondary data. Abstract

After 11 September 2001, hijab and women with hijab have become the new subaltern in the contemporary social and cultural relationships in France. It is interesting to see how political elites, society and women with hijab are seeing those symbols as part of their subject position—emphasizing the concept of ‘self’ and ‘others’. This paper is based on research which employed Critical Discourse method, specifically to examine the level of actor’s positioning in order to elaborate how positioning is used to examine the dynamics of social relation in France, including the various forms of its transformation and its resistence.
