Abstract

The concept of postmemory, introduced by Hirsch (2012), focuses on the processes through which memories—particularly traumatic memories— of a historical tragedy, “Holocaus”, which is transmitted across generations. Drawing on the elements supporting inter-individual memory transmission, this paper examines the dynamics of human memory within Novel Prize-winning French-Mauritian author J. M. G. Le Clézio's novella entitled “Tempête”. Using a qualitative approach, this study aims to examine the individual forms of memory transmission that are rooted in conditions of isolation, and developed through one trauma site as the memory connector. The presence of semiotics within the story also builds the narration of traumatic memories. It indicates that memory transmission is not necessarily vertical, which is passed from the previous to the next generations. Memory transmission is also not always linear, as there are factors and methods affecting the interpretation of received memory aside from verbally. Thus, the complex relationship between alienation and individual memory transmission processes can directly impact individuals' life projection.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This article aims to explore the concept of toxic masculinities in two French literary works, namely Plateforme by Michel Houellebecq and Syngué Sabour. Pierre de Patience by Atiq Rahimi, whose stories are related to Islam after the September 11, 2001 tragedy. Toxic masculinities are suspected to be present in both works, namely by placing women in the position of objects of sexual gaze and symbolic violence. This article dredges the concept of toxic masculinities, which is a derivation of the concept of hegemonic masculinities introduced by Raewyn Connell. This paper employs a critical discourse analysis method by examining the language used by the authors at levels of linguistic practice, discursive practice, and social practice with corpus data taken from the wordings and rewordings of the texts. This paper concludes that sexual gaze and symbolic violence are toxic because they can be drivers of physical violence. Keywords: toxic, masculinities, French literature, Islam

Abstract

This research aims to explain the dimension of genius, which is a cutting-edge sector that sees the subjectivity of the female by Kristeva. The main character of the novel is named Nada. This research looks at how Nada has a level of intellect and freedom within her genius dimension. Kristeva shows the dimension of female genius itself through life and thinking skills. Nada can easily enter public spaces through the power of critical thinking. The method employed in this research is qualitative descriptive. The material object is the novel Fi Qalbi Unsä Ibriyah, which serves as the research data. The data source consists of texts that are primary data, comprising dialogues, descriptions, or actions in the novel regarding the characteristics of a female’s genius. This research is based on Julia Kristeva's theory of Le Génie Féminin. The results of the research show that everything in Nada and her actions is evidence of what Kristeva refers to as the dimension of female genius. The significance of Nada's genius lies more in action, life, and thoughts. As Kristeva thought, Nada is looking at evidence of female’s talent through three dimensions. Nada builds mechanisms through self-actualization by bodily speaking and acting. She let go of the stigma that had been attached to her family tradition for a long time. Therefore, the highlight noted researchers are not at the end of the story, but on the capabilities of females and the efficiency of females’ processes over their ideas and positions. Their abilities are what Kristeva terms a feminine genius. every woman exists within her own dimension of genius, as far as she is capable of challenging the sociohistorical conditions of identity (as a woman).

Abstract

This article is to figure out how Javanese power succession has archetypal structures and relational systems in Babad Tanah Jawi, representing that the past is prophetic prologomena for the future. Using Lévi-Strauss’s structural anthropology of myth as a methodological approach, this study attempts to analyze the relational systems of successive power of Javanese characters (rulers) from pre-Majapahit to early Mataram in Babad Tanah Jawi and to interpret symbols of the prophetic divine during the periods of different Javanese reigns. This study has found that Javanese dynastic succession has been characterized by archetypal structures, in which the Javanese rulers commonly passed through identical phases of life-journeys, ranging from getting divination from fortune-teller (prophecy), getting out of the origins (exodus), to getting political recognition to be the next ruler (legitimacy). This system argues that the mythological prophecy in Babad Tanah Jawi is political because it prevails the logic of the Javanese worldview (weltanschauung) and the precondition of mystical and political legitimacy for Javanese rulers. The narratives of prophetic symbols, in which the different Javanese rulers had been involved in similar forms and structures, also imply the political dimension of prophecy representing the power of their reigns.

Abstract

Studies have been exploring the processes of identity construction increasingly intertwined with the behaviors of netizens. The construction of self-identity is now entangled with global capitalism. The contribution of this article is the exploration of the Superego as a site of vulnerability in the age of social media. In the current media environment, this vulnerability of the Superego is observable through the figure of the prominent individual whose visibility, amplified by significant social capital, draws both admiration and hostility from followers. This paper introduces the concept of the Upper Subject to understand such figures. This study focuses on two political figures who can be categorized as Upper Subjects based on the number of followers they command on social media: Khofifah Indar Parawansa (the Governor of East Java) and Dedi Mulyadi (the Governor of West Java). Both serve as the primary subjects of this analysis. The study adopts a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) method to examine how these Upper Subjects are constructed and contested within digital discourse.

Abstract

This study aims to explore recent Indonesian short stories written by women in their efforts to produce feminine metaphors as a form of resistance against the singular truth of masculinity. In narrating their short stories, female writers produce feminine metaphors shaped by the ecological conditions surrounding them. These feminine narratives are presented as an accentuation of women's defense against the ecological damage suffered by islands inhabited by humans. The patriarchal system combined with greedy capitalism and modernism has damaged the ecology of the islands where humans live. Through literary works, women carry out symbolic resistance by producing new metaphors as a representation of the mainstreaming of women in their involvement in creating an egalitarian relationship between humans and nature. This study uses the narrative theory approach from Helene Cixous which was then developed into feminine metaphors by Leslie Rabine. Based on an exploratory analysis of linguistic data in the short stories Mandi Mayah and Kesaksian di Titik Didih by Deasy Tirayoh, and Angin Berkabar Hujan by Dian Nangin, the results show that feminine metaphors are closely related to the ecological elements of the islands, including the sea, plantations, and agriculture. In this case, the sea, plantations, and agriculture are combined with efforts to resist patriarchy, capitalism, and modernism through the accentuation of symbolic and metaphorical language.
