Abstract

This article attempts to examine the connections between poetry and the constructions of women and pleasure emphasized by the author. The works examined are those of Gullaume Apollinaire, a famed French poet whose calligramatic poetry collections specifically positioned women as objects of pleasure. Most interestingly, in Apollinaire's poetry the depiction of women as objects of pleasure through connotative symbols that can only be given significance by decoding the highly cultural meanings they contain. The theory of the male gaze is used here to examine how visual pleasure has been operated by the poet. Meanwhile, semiotics has been used to decode the calligrammatic aspects of Apollinaire's poems. This research finds that symbols of exoticism, reproduction, and fantastic pleasures are utilized by Apollinaire in his poetry to emphasize his dominance of women by positioning them as objects of pleasure.

Abstract

This research aims to portray the social categories such as social class and gender that construct the oppression experienced by women in the drama script Les Bonnes written by Jean Genet. This contestation appears as a result of an interaction between three main characters in the drama: Claire and Solange, as maids and Madame as their employer. Madame is a rich woman who treats them badly because of their social background as poor women. As a result of her treatment, Claire and Solange aim to kill their employer as the way out to be free from Madame’s oppression. They create an assassination simulation to obtain their objective. To analyze this problem, this research uses the concept of habitus, capital, and arena from the theory of cultural production of Pierre Bourdieu. The method used in this article is a textual analysis method. The material objects are the drama script, Les Bonnes. The corpus data is taken from the words, sentences, and paragraphs containing the expression correlated with the contestations of power. The data is then analyzed using the lenses from the concept of habitus and cultural arena by Pierre Bourdieu. The finding shows that the habitus forms a constant and repetitive interaction among the subjects. It is influenced by the subjects’ position based on the social capital they possess. The position is characterized by two classes: the dominant and the worker that contribute to the form of contestations in Les Bonnes.

Abstract

THE DYNAMICS OF RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ISOLATION AND MEMORY TRANSMISSION IN “TEMPÊTE” NOVELLA BY J. M. G. LE CLÉZIO: A POST-MEMORY REVIEWAbstract: The concept of postmemory, introduced by Hirsch (2012), focuses on the processes through which memories—particularly traumatic memories— of a historical tragedy, “Holocaus”, which is transmitted across generations. Drawing on the elements supporting inter-individual memory transmission, this paper examines the dynamics of human memory within Novel Prize-winning French-Mauritian author J. M. G. Le Clézio's novella entitled “Tempête”. Using a qualitative approach, this study aims to examine the individual forms of memory transmission that are rooted in conditions of isolation, and developed through one trauma site as the memory connector. The presence of semiotics within the story also builds the narration of traumatic memories. It indicates that memory transmission is not necessarily vertical, which is passed from the previous to the next generations. Memory transmission is also not always linear, as there are factors and methods affecting the interpretation of received memory aside from verbally. Thus, the complex relationship between alienation and individual memory transmission processes can directly impact individuals' life projection. Keywords: French Literature, Memory Transmission, Postmemory, TraumaDINAMIKA HUBUNGAN KETERASINGAN DENGAN TRANSMISI MEMORI DALAM NOVELLA “TEMPÊTE” KARYA J. M. G. LE CLÉZIO: TELAAH POSTMEMORY Abstrak: Postmemory sebagai konsep digagas oleh Hirsch (2012), berfokus pada proses transmisi memori.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract. Suicide is one of the causes of death that occurs in a global scope but always causes divisive perspectives in various circles of society. For most people, suicide is a taboo topic, but not for other groups. The film Monsieur Lazhar (2011) is a film that shows the different perspectives between different age groups, namely the adult age group and the young age group, on a suicide that occurred at an elementary school in Montreal, Canada. This study aims at determining the different perspectives of the two different parties on suicide and the reasons for these differences in views. Pierre Bourdieu’s Champ de Force theory is the lens used in this research. The difference in perspective is influenced by the disposition system which Bourdieu calls the habitus. Habitus operates in a realm (champ). In the film, the domain in question is school. Meanwhile, Durkheim’s theory of suicide was chosen to determine the relationship of social problems to suicide. The method used in this research is content analysis. The data used are the chronological text of the scenes and the transcript of the conversations from the film. From the research, it was found that the school, which is the adult age group, has a counter and stigmatic view of suicide, reinforced by perceptions of psychological problems and social taboos. Meanwhile, students, who are in the young age group, tend to view suicide as a problem related to personal aspects and personal experiences so that they do not have a judgmental attitude like the school. Keywords : Suicide, Contestation, Realm, Perspective, Habitus

Abstract

This article discusses several activities intended for Acehnese women after the implementation of Islamic sharia. Activities aimed at women in public spaces have an impact on the marginalization and narrowing of women's public spaces. This article also explicitly provides an overview and analysis of what actually happened to Acehnese women so that it appears that there is a problem of the domination of male power over women based on religious, cultural, and political arguments. The purpose of this article is for the public to understand that the Aceh government has made policies aimed at women in the public sphere with the support of Wilayatul Hisbah, which has an impact on the marginalization of women. It is found that after the implementation of Islamic law in 2001 until now, in Aceh, there have been domestication of women with various regulations (qonuns) as well as text interpretations which are used as legitimacy by the power of conservative ideology on progressive understanding. This article makes Aceh a focus area. This article is based on the literature as a secondary source as well as interviews with experts.

Abstract

This article explores the practice of Hambor tradition as little narrative in managing conflict and peace situations in Manggarai, Eastern Indonesia. Hambor, which means peace, is a component of local wisdom and a strategy for resolving conflict based on local culture. There are several issues to address, including the following: what is the meaning, impact, and manifestation of Hambor for Manggarai people on a personal and social level? What is the role of Hambor tradition in managing conflict and peace in Manggarai? This research used the ethnographic method through the genetic structuralism approach developed by the French philosopher and sociologist Pierre Bourdieu to understand the meaning, impact, and implementation of the Hambor process in daily life by the Manggaraian speech community. The research result shows that Hambor is the leading force in creating peace and harmony for the Manggarai people. Hambor is the substance of harmony between humans, the world (tana lino), the ancestors (wura agu ceki), and the God (Mori Kraéng). Hambor process in Manggarai will be useful if it is based on a mutual commitment to overcoming disputes, transformative option (post-conflict), and the involvement and willingness of perpetrator and victim to forgive one another.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore the memory and the trajectory of the Javanese diaspora on the novels written by two female authors of Javanese descent in New Caledonia using a gender perspective. The Javanese diaspora in New Caledonia is a community that has left their homeland (Java) to start a new life in their destination land (New Caledonia) since 1896. They are descendants of the contract coolies (laborers) sent by the Dutch colonial government who controlled the Dutch Indies, including Java, at the request of French colonial government. The delivery of contract coolies was based on an agreement called the “Koeli Ordonatie” which had become a legal regulation and was implemented since the 1880s. It was a regulation signed by the Governor-General of the Netherlands Number 138 whose purpose was to fid unskilled laborers willing to work in the Dutch colonies, especially in the plantations and mining. The coolies, especially from Java, were mostly used as manual laborers in various parts of Dutch colonies, such as in Suriname. Seeing that this Dutch policy brought positive results for the exploitation of natural resources in the Dutch colonies, the French colonial government asked the help from the Dutch colonial government to recruit the laborers to be sent to French colonial region, New Caledonia.
