Abstract

This article sought to explore women's language style through a regular conversation in a natural setting conducted by women speakers. Considering the potential of Podcast on Spotify as a means to gather the conversation discourse, the writers were fascinated by one of the Podcasts performed by an American journalist and activist named Noor Tagouri. She initiated and ran a program called The Process to disclose someone's struggle, unique costumes, and way of thinking behind his/her success. This Podcast was chosen in terms of personal and introspective topics developed by Tagouri and her guest, Lisa Ling, whose profession was also a journalist. Through personal and introspective ideas, the writers were able to identify women's linguistic features such as: minimal responses, hedges, tag questions, questions, commands and directives, swearing and taboo language, and compliments in order to build a cooperative environment. This article employed descriptive qualitative methods following the procedures proposed by Creswell   (2014): collecting the data, analyzing the data, and interpreting the data. From thirty-four minutes of conversation, the result indicated that the speakers frequently used the features of hedges (55%). Then, followed by Minimal response occurred (20%), questions (12%), compliment (8%), tag questions (5%), and commands, directives, swearing and taboos (0%). It can be concluded that the use of hedges was more widely used to maintain the flow of conversations which in line with turn-taking, courtesy, and mitigating miscommunication between speakers.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the use of anaphoric and cataphoric references in narrative text in “Bright An English” Textbook for 8th-grade junior high school students, and to identify the most commonly used in the texts. This study examined the data that contained the anaphoric and cataphoric by the theory of Halliday and Hasan (1976). The study used a qualitative descriptive approach because it dealt with descriptive. The main data for this study was “Bright, an English textbook” for 8th-grade junior high school students, written by Nur Zaida and published by Erlangga. The results showed those anaphoric and cataphoric references contained in the English textbook; 22 sentences had anaphoric and cataphoric references in detail of which fifteen sentences were anaphoric, and seven sentences were cataphoric. “Bright, an English textbook” for eighth-grade junior high school students frequently uses pronominal anaphora because it addresses the referent of the anaphora with a pronoun. Pronouns were important because they linked sentences, which helped to avoid the nouns being used repeatedly. Besides, the cataphoric reference was rarely used, which is considered more difficult for 8th graders to understand.

Abstract

This research aims to discover multicultural values using semiotic analysis in an English textbook. This research is qualitative methodology. The sample of this research is an English textbook under the title ''Big English 5'' used in a private primary school in Indonesia. The data were gathered by documentation of the signs in texts and pictures in that English textbook and were analyzed by using semiotic analysis used Barthes's theory (1977) by integrating various theories to get the multicultural values represented in the English textbook. The findings showed that the texts and pictures represent each multicultural value covered in Big English 5. In addition, the most frequent multicultural value was found about Appreciate Other People's Cultural Products (AOPCP) with eleven items. The other most frequent multicultural value was found about International Cultural (IC) with eleven items. The multicultural values represent in the English textbook in pictures and texts consist of the things, places, foods, and traditions. Unfortunately, the Source Culture (SC) related to Indonesian culture was found merely two items, even though young learners use that English book at a primary school in Indonesia. In conclusion, the English textbook of Big English 5 contained multicultural values which could support young learners' English language process. However, this English textbook needs to add the content of Indonesian culture as the user of that English textbook. Hence, it could acquaint the Indonesian culture through English learning for young learners earlier. Besides, the role of English teachers and students becomes necessary to utilize the English textbook appropriately by designing activities that entangle multicultural values and the use of the English language during the learning process.

Abstract

Individuals often lose confidence in learning and using English due to lack of support or even ridicule from the surrounding environment. In previous research, we found that quite a few people did not understand the importance of English in social life and were more focused on solving problems in the environment, not starting from facing these problems themselves. Through this case we want to change the way an individual thinks about being afraid of the things they face during the learning process, and we want to raise self-confidence in people out there who are learning English. The researcher used a qualitative method, using interviews involving 10th and 11th grade students at SMAN 1 Cileungsi (5 participants at each grade with a total of 10 participants). Based on the data analysis, it was found that many of the students who were studying English had problems with their self-confidence.

The study investigates the various speech acts that lecturers use in a Discourse Analysis classroom. The study attempted to determine which type was most frequently used based on Searle’s theory. The study was conducted by involving two lecturers of Discourse Analysis classroom in the Graduate Program of English Education UIN Jakarta, using a qualitative research design. The data were gathered through Zoom video recordings capturing the nuances of learning sessions and the collection of messages within the WhatsApp class group. Subsequently, the data were transcribed and analysed. The interesting findings revealed; 50% of what lecturers said consisted of commands or directives, 24% were representatives, 13% were commissive, and also 13% were expressive. The results indicated that the most dominant type of speech act was directives (50%). Lecturers predominantly utilized directives to guide students in specific actions, including; asking students to allocate more time to study, suggesting them to read reputable scientific journals, and encouraging students to work gradually on their papers to avoid last-minute rushes. In the end, this research helps to understand how lecturers talk and share ideas in a Discourse Analysis classroom. It also provides insights into how lecturers conduct teaching in that particular class.
