Abstract

Abstract

Fresh produce has a short shelf-life because the metabolic activity continues after harvest. Low temperature is one of the postharvest technology methods that suppress this activity along storage. Its effects prolong the shelf-life of fruits and vegetables. This method has long been recommended to reduce deterioration during storage so that it can maintain the quality of fruits and vegetables. However, it still has drawbacks such as chilling injury, especially in tropical and subtropical origins that are chilling sensitive. Therefore, another storage method is needed to alleviate chilling injury such as low-temperature conditioning, high-temperature conditioning, and intermittent warming which only use environmental conditioning during storage. The other one has modified atmosphere packaging and controlled atmosphere packaging. They utilize the ideal atmosphere for each fresh product during storage. The treatment proved that it could alleviate chilling injuries such as reduced pitting, flesh injury, failure of mature, scald, peel browning, weight losses, electrolyte leakage, malondialdehyde, respiration rates, production of superoxide radical anion (O₂-) & hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), lipoxygenase activity, phospholipase D, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), and polyphenol oxidase (PPO). Keywords: Chilling injury, Fresh produce, Intermittent warming, Low temperature, Physical treatment.

Abstract

Climate change impacts increasing temperature, and environmental factors can affect the capacity and rate of seed germination. This study aimed to determine and study the effect of temperature changes on the viability and vigor of brown rice seeds and the morphology of the sprouts produced. The variation of temperature used was 28-400C, and ten genotypes of brown rice seeds used were Pulen Mudiak, Pulen Kandih, Pulen Marapak, Pulen Talao, 64, Sibandung, Silalang, Timbo Abu, Labuah Baru, and Melayu. The results showed that every 10C increase in temperature affects rice germination percentage. The optimum temperature for the germination of ten genotypes of brown rice tested was a temperature range of 28-330C, with a germination value of >80%, the maximum critical temperature 370C and at 38-40 0C no brown rice seeds germinated. Pulen Marapak has the highest maximum growth potential of 90,3% at 280C and 10% at 370C. The increase in temperature also damages brown rice roots and shoots dengan the average root length is 6,7-10,1 cm and shoot length is 8-11,5 cm at 280C.

Abstract

One of the efforts that can be done is to increase the national corn productivity by developing prolific composite corn varieties. This is done because prolific corn is a type of corn with a tendency to produce two or more cobs, so that it can increase the value of corn production. The purpose of this study was to obtain prolific corn candidates (two cobs) with high yield and uniformity. This research was conducted using the mass selection method. Mass selection is done by selecting plants that have the desired character, namely prolific corn (cob two). The observed variables were the diversity in the F4 population, the percentage of prolific maize, and the comparison of the yield components of prolific maize with non-prolific maize. This study succeeded in obtaining 50% prolific corn on the cob and has wide diversity criteria. Of the 561 prolific corn plants, there are 91 corn plants that are classified as productive prolific. Prolific maize has a higher yield component than non-Prolific maize. Seed weight with cobs on productive prolific corn reached 318 g and seed weight reached 268 g.

Abstract

High yielding corn breeding program is an alternative to meet national needs. Characterization is one of the essential stages in a corn breeding program. This research aims to evaluate agronomic characters and yield potential of the parent lines to be used as a basis for the hybrid variety development program. This research was conducted from May to October 2023 at the Koto Tingga Experimental Station, Padang, West Sumatra Province. There are 5 promising corn lines used in this study with a one-factor completely randomized block design with 3 replications, therefore there were15 experimental units. The results shows that lines significantly affected on all characters except the number of cobs per plant and yield potential. The Mz1 line had the highest yield potential (3,7 tons ha-1), followed by the Mz5 line (3,4 tons ha-1). These two lines have relatively medium plant height (221,6–246,3 cm), early harvest maturity (94,2–99,9 DAP), and medium to high 100–grain weight (28,4–37,9 g). These two lines have the potential to be further developed as crossing parental.
