Abstract

Differentiated instructions have been recommended for classrooms with students of different readiness, learning profiles, and backgrounds in English classrooms. This study aimed at elaborating the implementation of differentiated instruction in terms of its advantages and the challenges encountered by teachers and students in implementing differentiated instruction. The study was designed as library research, following George's ten steps (2008) model. Experts' opinions and previous studies were reviewed in this present study to provide a comprehensive mapping of the advantages and challenges in implementing differentiated instructions. The review revealed that differentiated instruction could motivate low-achieving students, increase students' participation, interaction, and cooperation, as well as build a better teacher-student relationship. However, differentiated instruction also poses challenges, such as time-consuming, misperception about unfair treatments, and class size. These results imply that better planning should be conducted before implementing differentiated instruction to gain its benefits.

Abstract

Literature reflects life and shares insights about human life. Holocaust literature focuses on sharing the dark experience of the German Nazis' occupation of Poland in the Second World War. This study aims to identify the representation of social issues in John Boyne’s The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2006), one of the Holocaust novels that focuses on children’s experience of the Holocaust. The study employs the interactive qualitative data analysis from Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014), where the data analysis consists of three simultaneous processes of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. It reveals five major social issues included in the novel: the ethnocentric Nazi’s beliefs about German’s superiority, slavery, child labor, class difference, and marginalization toward women. The results imply that children’s literature can also present social issues that may raise awareness about the cruelty of the Holocaust.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe present study analyzed the representations of the Five Core Values of character education recommended by the Indonesian Ministry of National Education in 2017 into a national English Textbook for 7th Grade, entitled When English Rings a Bell. The present study was qualitative research, which conducted the data classification, data display, and conclusion drawing concurrently and repeatedly, while the whole process is always compared with the data collection. The study revealed that the book investigated represents all five core values: religiosity, nationalism, independence, cooperation, and integrity. Religiosity and nationalism were the two values most cultivated in the textbook, while integrity is represented more infrequently, and cooperation value is sparsely presented. These findings imply that the imbalanced representation of the five core values in the textbook investigated could negatively affect the students’ character building. Thus, the present study recommends teachers use this textbook to design activities that call for cooperation and integrity values, so the students’ character building at school can be more balanced. When English Rings a Bell.

Abstract

Poetic expression in poetry of different languages is an interesting study because this literary work reflects not only the personal expression of the poet but also the world through diction and figurative language that carry certain moral messages. This study aims to reveal the translation of comparative and contradictory figurative languages which are used to convey poetic expressions found in the poems about love and the existence of a poem, which are understood by the poet, M.Aan Mansyur, in his bilingual poetry collection, "There is No New York Today." The method used in this research was a combination of content analysis and stylistic approach. The writer compared figurative language in two languages, Indonesian and English and the strategies applied to translate them. This study found that first, poetic expressions were expressed in three ways, namely (1) comparative figurative language represented by metaphors, (2) contradictory figurative language manifested through paradoxes, and (3) combinations of comparison and contradiction in one verse of poetry, and second, the translation strategies applied were literal translation and literal-meaning translation. These two findings are useful for exploring the use of comparative and contradictory figurative language as well as how to translate them so that the message is conveyed perfectly and the language style used by the translator is as beautiful as the poetry of the source language.

Abstract

With the advancement of technology, a newly adopted form of literary work was found, known as a movie game. It is one of the game genres that resembles real movies that provide choices to the players who can actively determine the story, ending, and characters' action. In literary work, a character is one of the intrinsic elements that can be interestingly analyzed from the psychological perspective, including Ego Defense Mechanisms. This study focuses on how the protagonist in a movie game entitled The Walking Dead: Michonne faced her anxiety through her ego defense mechanisms. It aims to identify the types of ego defense mechanisms and how they can help the protagonist cope with her anxiety. The discussion was based on psychoanalysis theory, namely Ego Defense Mechanisms proposed by Sigmund Freud. This study elaborated the description of the protagonist's actions when she faced anxiety through a qualitative method. The analysis revealed that the protagonist adopted the four types of Ego Defense Mechanisms: repression, sublimation, rationalization, and aggression. It was found that aggression was the most frequently adopted mechanism, followed by sublimation, rationalization, and the least was repression. This finding indicated that the protagonist chose aggression to release resentment or dissatisfaction, especially when facing objects or other characters that create anxiety or frustration. It implies that the persistence of aggression, sublimation, rationalization, and repression could reflect the presence of continual threats in the environment from which people should survive.

Abstract

Abstract

When children get regular and continual exposure to two or more languages, they can develop the competence to use those languages. However, the languages used by the children may include mixing, where features of different languages converge in single language use. The present research investigates the speech of a three-year-old child exposed to Indonesian and Balinese since birth. The study focused on analyzing the language mixing produced by the child. The child was observed for three months. The child was exposed to Indonesian by the parents and Balinese by grandparents and other extended family members. They all lived in the same compound. In collecting the data, diary notes were used, supplemented with video recordings. The result shows that language mixing occurred when the child substituted content words, phrases, and function words in both languages. The language mixing happens due to the salient of the words, the frequent use of the words or phrases in the child's environment, the availability of mixing in the input, and an effort to emphasize meaning. Pragmatically, the result shows that the child can use the two languages appropriately with different interlocutors.

Abstract

Although Maleficent’s characterizations as wicked witch by the first Disney’s adaptation into Maleficent in 2014, the beginning of the 2019 sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil started with a prologue that Maleficent was narratively still considered evil, from which the plot evolves to reveal how the marginalizing characterization prevailed. Amidst this entanglement between the film’s plot and Maleficent’s character revelation, the present study aimed at elaborating Maleficent’s characterizations as an affectionate fey. The present study employed McKee’s (2003) textual analysis to observe Maleficent’s characterizations along the plot development, to reveal how the film portray Maleficent’s affectionate dispositions despite her formidable strength and appearance. The study concludes that Maleficent affections are highlighted through her actions toward the moors and the marginalized, as well as her blessings for Prince Phillip, underlining her willingness to admit her misjudgment and to repent because of her love for Aurora. This finding implies that the film’s plot development strongly relies on Maleficent’s character development facilitated by her strong affection as a surrogate mother.Although Maleficent’s character as a wicked witch has been deconstructed by the first Disney's adaptation of Maleficent in 2014, the beginning of the 2019 sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil started with a prologue that Maleficent was narratively still considered evil, from which the plot evolves to reveal how her marginalizing traits prevailed. Amidst this entanglement between the film's plot and Maleficent's character revelation, the present study aimed at elaborating on Maleficent's personality as an affectionate fey. The present study employed McKee’s (2003) textual analysis to observe Maleficent’s character development along the plot development to reveal how the film portrays Maleficent's growing affectionate dispositions despite her formidable strength and appearance. The study concludes that Maleficent's affections are highlighted through her loving, nurturing, and protective traits toward Aurora, the creatures of the Moors, other feys, and humans. With the depiction of these traits, Maleficent emerged as an affectionate Fey in human's eyes. They eliminate the prejudice against Maleficent, the feys, and the fairies, fostering a harmonious life between humans, the feys, and the fairies.
