Abstract

This study investigates the strategic optimization of Indonesia's National Shipyard Industry, focusing on its role in enhancing maritime security in the Indonesian Archipelago II (ALKI II) region. Utilizing a TOWS analysis and drawing on expert opinions in maritime security, the research examines the internal and external factors influencing the industry, as well as potential future threats. The relocation of the National Capital to Penajem Pasir Utara, East Kalimantan, emerged as a pivotal factor, offering a geographically centralized location and favorable environmental conditions, and presenting an opportunity to equalize the development of the Galkapnas Industry. The results indicate that almost 60% of Galkapnas are concentrated in Java and Batam, highlighting the need for aggressive strategic action to redistribute the industry and facilitate maintenance functions in ALKI II. The study underscores the importance of coordinated efforts among various ministries, particularly the Ministry of Defense, in achieving this redistribution, and concludes with recommendations for stakeholders to embrace the challenge of building and optimizing Galkapnas through extensive development in the ALKI II region, thereby enhancing the Navy's operational capabilities.Highlights: The concentration of almost 60% of Galkapnas in Java and Batam necessitates aggressive redistribution for optimizing maritime security. Relocation of the National Capital to Penajem Pasir Utara presents strategic opportunities for balanced development and industrial growth in the maritime sector. Coordination among ministries and stakeholders is crucial for implementing the recommended changes, enhancing the Indonesian Navy's operational capabilities. Abstract

This research is a scientific article carried out in the field with the aim of studying the relationship between society and the Surau Cerobong (surau can be referred to as a small mosque), from historical and archaeological views. This study covers the history, social and religious activities carried out at Surau Cerobong, and the shape of the building. This research uses historical research methods as the main method and is reinforced by archaeological research methods. The historical method is used through the steps of heuristics, source criticism, synthesis, and historiography. While the archaeological method is used to analyze the physical building of the surau. The results of this study found that Surau Cerobong was built on the initiative of Imam Karim in 1941, as a place to develop Islamic teachings. Aside from being a place to perform the obligatory prayers, the surau is also used as a place to teach tariqah and conduct suluk. In architectural aspects, there are parts that have similarities with the Persian architectural style during the Seljuk Dynasty.

Abstract

This research probes the ramifications of globalization on Muslim identity in Singapore since its independence in 1965, concentrating on the four economic development phases pivotal to the nation's growth. It concurrently traces the post-independence evolution of Muslim life, specifically in religious practices and social norms. Singapore's globalization-driven economic ascent, its status as a developed nation, and its competitive business environment stand as evident outcomes. However, the Muslim communities grapple with the challenge of adapting to global shifts while preserving their Islamic identity. The study emphasizes the imperative of comprehending the intricate interplay between globalization and Muslim identity in Singapore. Employing the historical method comprising heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography, the research analyzes historical records and relics. Findings underscore the instrumental role of technology and social media in shaping Muslim identity, facilitating the dissemination of religious information and fostering global connectivity within Muslim communities. While the Singapore government's multiculturalism policy aims for interfaith harmony and recognizes the Muslim community's integral role, restrictions on public expressions of religious identity reflect the state's secular stance. This research offers a profound understanding of the complex dynamics between globalization and Muslim identity in Singapore, shedding light on the challenges and opportunities encountered by Muslim communities in safeguarding their cultural and religious diversity amidst the ever-evolving global landscape.

Abstract

This paper focuses on analyzing the massive tin mining issue on Bangka Island through the lens of the First Generation Frankfurt School’s critical social theory, particularly the ideas of Horkheimer and Adorno concerning the consequences of instrumental or technological rationality. The study employs a qualitative approach using a literature review method, elaborated with field observations for data collection. The analysis reveals the continuing relevance of the First Generation Frankfurt School’s thought in understanding modern human problems rooted in instrumental rationality, as reflected in the large-scale exploitation of tin resources. A critical examination indicates that the root cause of this phenomenon lies in the epistemic foundation of the state’s and local elites’ approach to resource management—through PT Timah (formerly PT Kobatin)—which is characterized by what Horkheimer terms instrumental rationality and what Adorno refers to as technological rationality. This mode of reasoning prioritizes effectiveness, efficiency, and profit orientation, often at the expense of environmental integrity and human well-being. Empirical evidence of environmental degradation is evident in unreclaimed mining pits (kolong), damaged mangrove ecosystems, marine pollution leading to the loss of fishermen’s livelihoods, and a widening socio-economic gap between elites and field laborers.

Abstract

This study analyzes the performance of a speaker recognition system based on Hidden Markov Models (HMM) using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) for feature extraction. The objective of this research is to evaluate the effect of the number of FFT samples on the recognition accuracy. Experiments were conducted using speech signal test data with variations in the number of speakers ranging from 2 to 10, and variations in the number of FFT samples of 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, and 256 samples per state. The results indicate that the number of FFT samples significantly affects system accuracy. Using a small number of FFT samples results in low and unstable accuracy, especially as the number of speakers increases. Increasing the number of FFT samples improves both accuracy and stability of the system. The highest and most consistent performance is achieved when using 64 to 128 samples per state. Increasing the number of samples beyond this range does not lead to a significant improvement in accuracy, indicating a saturation effect. These findings demonstrate that selecting an appropriate number of FFT samples is essential for achieving optimal performance in HMM-based speaker recognition systems, with 64 to 128 samples per state recommended as the optimal configuration.

Abstract

This study investigates the strategic role of Alexandria as a major port city during the Mamluk Sultanate from 1250 to 1517 and the dynamics of its interactions with the Italian maritime republics. Alexandria served as a crucial node in premodern global trade networks. The study also examines the condition of the port and its influence on urban development, maritime security, and state fiscal policy. Drawing on primary sources such as the chronicles of al Maqrizi and Ibn Taghribirdi, as well as secondary studies, the research shows that relations between the Mamluks and the Italian states were shaped by deep economic interdependence. The Mamluks relied on European precious metals and manufactured products, while the Italian states depended on spices, sugar, cotton, and other Eastern commodities that flowed through Alexandria. These interactions unfolded in a tense geopolitical environment marked by the legacy of the Crusades, competition among Italian states, church embargoes, and persistent piracy. The study argues that Alexandria functioned not only as an economic hub but also as a stage for coercive diplomacy, where the Mamluks used foreign merchant communities as instruments of negotiation to compensate for their limited naval power. Yet the reliance on trade monopolies, transit taxation, and the failure to adapt to global changes, especially the rise of Portuguese sea routes and Ottoman expansion, weakened this system and contributed to its fragility in the decades before the fall of the Mamluk Sultanate in 1517
