Abstract

This paper presents a systematic review of scholarly literature published between 2015 and 2025 that explores narrative through a linguistic lens. The review aims to identify and synthesize major critical and theoretical frameworks applied to narrative studies within the field of linguistics. A total of 36 peer-reviewed studies were selected through comprehensive searches across major academic databases using keywords related to narrative linguistics, discourse analysis, and critical theory. The findings reveal four dominant categories of analysis: structuralist and formal linguistic frameworks, cognitive linguistic approaches, critical discourse analysis (CDA), and multimodal/digital narrative frameworks. While structuralist approaches focus on the formal organization of narrative elements such as syntax and coherence, cognitive frameworks emphasize the role of mental representation, conceptual blending, and embodiment in narrative comprehension. CDA-based studies investigate how narratives construct and challenge power relations, while multimodal approaches explore how meaning is shaped across verbal, visual, and digital modes. This review demonstrates a clear disciplinary shift toward integrative and socially responsive frameworks, reflecting the increasing complexity of narrative forms in contemporary communication. The study also identifies emerging gaps in cross-cultural perspectives and digital multimodal theory, suggesting directions for future research. By mapping recent developments in narrative theory from a linguistic standpoint, this paper contributes to a deeper understanding of how language constructs, conveys, and transforms stories across contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of teaching strategies to improve reading comprehension among eighth-grade students in Indonesian junior high schools, where English is treated as a foreign language. Limited exposure and practice outside the classroom contribute to underwhelming reading proficiency. The research adopts a qualitative case study approach involving two English teachers and eighth-grade students. Data collection methods include observations, interviews, and documentation, while analysis is conducted using Miles and Hubberman’s interactive model. Findings reveal that teachers employ two primary strategies for teaching descriptive text comprehension: Think Aloud and Question Answer Relationships (QARs). The Think Aloud strategy involves guiding students to set reading purposes and make predictions during the pre-reading stage. During reading, students identify key information, resolve unfamiliar vocabulary, and make connections across texts. Post-reading activities include summarizing, evaluating comprehension through performance, and formative assessments. QARs strategy focuses on building background knowledge before reading. Teachers introduce four types of questions – Right There, Think and Search, Author and Me, and On My Own – to guide text interpretation during reading. Reflection and comprehension tests, such as worksheets, are conducted post-reading to assess learning outcomes. The study highlights the effectiveness of interactive and structured approaches in fostering deeper engagement and improving students’ reading comprehension abilities. These strategies offer practical insights for educators seeking to enhance reading proficiency through targeted interventions.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper presents a systematic literature review of research published between 2015 and 2025 on the social epistemology of science, focusing on how scientific knowledge is produced within communities. Moving beyond traditional individualistic epistemologies, the review highlights four dominant themes: epistemic trust and authority, collaborative and collective knowledge production, institutional norms shaping epistemic practices, and epistemic injustice affecting marginalized groups. Findings reveal that scientific knowledge depends heavily on social interactions, trust networks, and institutional frameworks that guide what counts as credible and valuable knowledge. The review also uncovers the significant influence of funding structures, publication pressures, and performance metrics in shaping scientific inquiry, often privileging dominant voices and methodologies. Epistemic injustice emerges as a critical issue, emphasizing the need for more inclusive and diverse epistemic practices within science. By synthesizing philosophical and empirical work, this study underscores the importance of understanding science as a socially situated and institutionally embedded practice. The paper concludes by advocating for greater integration of diverse perspectives and institutional reforms aimed at promoting epistemic equity, accountability, and transparency. This social epistemological approach offers a promising framework for rethinking scientific knowledge production in ways that are more democratic, ethical, and responsive to contemporary challenges.
