Abstract

This research investigates how effective the Problem Based Learning (PBL) method is at improving students’ understanding of reading through narrative texts in SMP GKPS 13 Sibarou. The study was motivated by the finding that numerous eighth-grade students struggled with grasping text organization and main concepts in their reading materials. To tackle this challenge, the teacher adopted PBL techniques by offering students real-world problems related to narrative text analysis, which they addressed collectively through reading aloud, discussions, and presentations. The research included 14 students who were paired up, and it utilized worksheets, observation forms, reading comprehension assessments, and documentation as tools. Activities were crafted to encourage students to recognize the organization of narrative texts, apply past tense verbs, and derive meaning through guided inquiry. The reading aloud method aided learners in enhancing their pronunciation, fluency, and understanding of the texts. The findings indicated a significant improvement in students' narrative text comprehension, along with heightened confidence, involvement, and critical thinking skills. The incorporation of PBL encouraged teamwork and a more profound engagement with the content. This method is advantageous for English educators looking to develop meaningful, student-focused learning experiences.

Abstract

This study presents a socialization activity that introduced the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) to 11th-grade students in the TKJ program at SMK Nusantara Tanah Jawa. This initiative aimed to raise awareness of the TOEFL test format, its importance, and its relevance to academic and career development. A qualitative descriptive approach was used, involving 16 students through a structured program consisting of preparation, implementation, and evaluation stages. Findings indicated that most students were initially unfamiliar with the TOEFL, especially the listening component. However, this socialization activity effectively increased students' understanding and interest in English learning, especially in the listening section. Challenges such as low prior knowledge and limited engagement were addressed through simplified explanations and interactive sessions. Overall, the activity contributed positively to improving students' English language competence and motivation, preparing them to understand the TOEFL listening section for global academic and professional demands.

Abstract

This community-based outreach program was conducted to improve Grade XI students’ awareness, skills, and motivation in preparing for the TOEFL Listening section at SMA Negeri 3 Pematangsiantar. As English language proficiency becomes an increasingly essential requirement for global education and career advancement, early exposure to international standardized tests such as TOEFL is critical. The program introduced students to the structure and function of the TOEFL, including its different types (iBT, ITP, and Prediction) and the specific challenges of the Listening section. Students were trained to use effective strategies such as focusing on the final line in dialogues, identifying synonymous phrases in questions and answers, and avoiding traps based on similar sounds. The implementation included interactive presentations, real-time simulations using Google Forms, and guided listening activities with authentic audio. Students participated actively and demonstrated improved engagement, comprehension, and test readiness. The feedback phase indicated that students gained a clearer understanding of TOEFL Listening tasks and increased confidence in approaching listening-based questions. The combination of strategy-based instruction, digital simulations, and supportive discussion helped students overcome initial anxiety and performance gaps. As a result, this outreach initiative successfully equipped students with practical listening tools, increased their motivation to practice independently, and laid the foundation for future TOEFL preparation. It is recommended that similar programs be extended to other schools to support students’ readiness for international English proficiency testing.

Abstract

Political debates are critical sites of meaning-making in democratic elections, where candidates communicate policies, values, and leadership personas through multiple semiotic modes. This study systematically reviews research on multimodal discourse analysis (MDA) of Indonesian presidential debates published between 2020 and 2025, aiming to synthesize theoretical frameworks, analytical practices, and thematic patterns in political communication. Using a structured systematic literature review, peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, and book chapters were collected from Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and DOAJ. Studies were screened based on their relevance to Indonesian presidential debates, use of multimodal frameworks, and empirical rigor. The review revealed that social semiotics is the predominant theoretical framework, with verbal language, gesture, and facial expressions being the most analyzed semiotic modes. Dominant themes of political meaning-making include leadership construction, national identity and populist appeals, and interactional power negotiation, often mediated by televised and digital platforms. While multimodality enhances understanding of how meaning is co-constructed, methodological inconsistencies—including small datasets and variable transcription practices—limit comparability across studies. This review highlights the growing importance of multimodal approaches for analyzing political debates in Indonesia and identifies gaps for future research. Specifically, more balanced attention to underexplored semiotic modes, standardized transcription methods, and theoretical integration are needed to advance the field. The study contributes to political discourse research by providing a comprehensive synthesis of recent multimodal analyses, offering insights into the complex ways in which Indonesian presidential candidates communicate meaning to diverse audiences.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh model pembelajaran Discovery Learning dengan menggunakan media video terhadap hasil belajar siswa kelas IV SD Swasta GKPS 2 Pematangsiantar. Latar belakang penelitian ini didasari oleh rendahnya hasil belajar siswa yang disebabkan oleh penggunaan metode pembelajaran konvensional yang kurang melibatkan keaktifan siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan metode eksperimen semu (quasi experiment). Subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas IV yang terdiri dari kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan tes hasil belajar, observasi, dan dokumentasi. Analisis data dilakukan dengan uji statistik menggunakan uji-t. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan penggunaan model Discovery Learning dengan media video terhadap hasil belajar siswa. Dengan demikian, model Discovery Learning berbantuan media video dapat dijadikan sebagai alternatif model pembelajaran yang efektif dalam meningkatkan hasil belajar siswa sekolah dasar.

Abstract

This mini research Introducing TOEFL and Strategies for Mastering the Listening Section: A Learning Program at SMA Negeri 1 Siantar was conducted with 21 eleventh-grade students (Class XI) as participants. The main objective of this study is to provide a structured and available step in preparing students to face academic English requirements, especially the TOEFL Listening section. The method used in this study consists of three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. In the preparation phase, students were introduced to the TOEFL format and the types of listening questions. In the implementation phase, students were trained using listening strategies such as note-taking, predicting content, and managing time. In the evaluation phase, students’ progress and performance were assessed. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ familiarity with the test and their listening comprehension skills. This program highlights the importance of early training and strategic learning in preparing high school students for academic English proficiency tests.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini dimotivasi oleh kemampuan mendengarkan siswa yang masih relatif rendah di sekolah Mars terkait apa itu TOEFL dan kurangnya pemahaman tentang keterampilan mendengarkan, terutama dalam memahami audio bahasa Inggris dengan aksen asing, kecepatan tinggi, dan variasi pertanyaan yang kompleks baik secara formal maupun akademis seperti yang umum ditemukan di bagian mendengarkan TOEFL. Kesulitan ini disebabkan oleh kurangnya paparan terhadap pemahaman keterampilan bahasa Inggris, terutama keterampilan mendengarkan yang efektif. Sosialisasi ini melibatkan 70 siswa sebagai peserta yang mengikuti kegiatan sosialisasi, yang dilakukan oleh siswa yang bertindak sebagai fasilitator utama dalam pelatihan. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif. Data diperoleh melalui observasi selama kegiatan, wawancara siswa, dan pemberian penjelasan tentang format TOEFL serta pemberian kiat dan trik dalam menjawab pertanyaan TOEFL dan pemberian tugas audio sebagai pelatihan. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa setelah mengikuti sosialisasi, siswa mulai tertarik pada TOEFL dan lebih memahami keterampilan mendengarkan. Siswa juga menunjukkan peningkatan kepercayaan diri dan motivasi saat mendengarkan audio bahasa Inggris. Selain itu, kegiatan ini menciptakan suasana belajar yang lebih interaktif dan menyenangkan. Oleh karena itu, kegiatan ini diharapkan menjadi model kolaboratif dalam meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran mendengarkan di tingkat sekolah menengah atas dan melalui sosialisasi ini diharapkan siswa akan termotivasi untuk meningkatkan pemahaman dan kemampuan mereka dalam bahasa Inggris, khususnya dalam keterampilan mendengarkan, agar siap menghadapi era globalisasi yang semakin canggih.
