Abstract

Mathematical reflective thinking skills and self-concept are essential aspects of 21st-century learning to address global challenges. This study analyzes the effect of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) on students' mathematical reflective thinking skills and self-concept. The experimental research involved 75 tenth-grade students in Bandar Lampung using a posttest control group design. Data were collected through mathematical reflective thinking skills tests and self-concept questionnaires and analyzed using parametric and non-parametric statistical tests. The results showed that the implementation of PjBL did not significantly affect students' mathematical reflective thinking skills and self-concept compared to conventional learning. However, the indicators of mathematical reflective thinking skills achievement in the PjBL class were higher. This study implies the need for a longer implementation of PjBL to achieve significant results and its potential contribution to developing students' collaboration, creativity, and social skills as part of holistic learning.

Abstract

Modeling abilities and student characteristics are very important in learning mathematics at school. One of the characteristics that must be considered is cognitive style. This study aims to describe the mathematical modeling abilities of students with field independent (FI) and field dependent (FD) cognitive styles in linear programming material. The design of this research is descriptive-qualitative. This study analyzed the mathematical modeling abilities, and then, using a purposive sampling technique, 4 subjects were selected as samples, 2 each for field independent (FI) and field dependent (FD) cognitive style subjects. Data on students' mathematical modeling abilities were obtained through task-based interviews and written tests, while cognitive style data were obtained through the Group Embedded Figure Test (GEFT) written test. The validity of the data was then tested using time triangulation and then analyzed through the stages of data reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions. So, the results of this study indicate that in modeling problems, students who have a cognitive style of FI tend to be able to fulfill indicators of understanding actual problems, preparing mathematical models from real models, and interpreting mathematical results in real situations. whereas students who have a cognitive style like FD tend to only be able to understand the real problem.

Abstract

One of the essential skills students must develop in mathematics learning is mathematical communication. However, field observations indicate that students still exhibit weaknesses in this area. Therefore, it is necessary to implement a learning model supported by digital media that facilitates students in expressing and communicating mathematical ideas more effectively. The guided inquiry learning model, when integrated with interactive media such as Desmos, offers a promising alternative. Desmos is a dynamic graphing application that allows students to explore mathematical concepts visually and interactively, thereby supporting deeper conceptual understanding and communication. This study employed a quasi-experimental design aimed at examining the improvement of students’ mathematical communication skills through the implementation of a guided inquiry learning model with Desmos. The population consisted of all ninth-grade students at SMP Negeri 45 Bandar Lampung in the 2024/2025 academic year, totaling 107 students across four classes. The samples were selected using a cluster random sampling technique and comprised class 9.3 (27 students) as the experimental group and class 9.2 (26 students) as the control group. The research design used was a posttest-only control group design. Quantitative data were collected through a mathematical communication skills test. Based on hypothesis testing using an independent sample t-test at a significance level of α = 0.05, the results showed that t-count > t-table (2.08 > 1.67). Thus, it can be concluded that the application of the guided inquiry learning model with Desmos significantly improves students’ mathematical communication skills.
