Abstract

This study investigates how politeness and impoliteness strategies in Killing Floor by Lee Child are used to navigate power dynamics, reflect Jack Reacher’s moral reasoning, and shape his character development. Drawing on Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory, Leech’s maxims, and Culpeper’s impoliteness strategies, the study explores how Reacher’s language functions as a tool for asserting authority, building trust, and resolving conflict. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through close reading and document analysis of the novel. Dialogue excerpts involving Reacher were selected based on their relevance to politeness and impoliteness strategies. Each excerpt was manually coded, categorized by strategy, and organized thematically to reveal patterns across different narrative contexts. Data analysis followed Miles and Huberman’s (1994) model, involving data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing, to ensure systematic and credible interpretation. The findings identify three key patterns: (1) Reacher’s use of impoliteness to resist authority and challenge power structures; (2) his selective use of politeness to build trust and alliances; and (3) his tactical manipulation of language for survival and control. This study fills a critical gap in pragmatic literature by offering a unified analysis of politeness and impoliteness, showing how these strategies jointly contribute to narrative progression and character transformation. Beyond literary analysis, it highlights how strategic language reflects moral decision-making and power negotiation, offering insights for pragmatics education and communication in high-stakes interactions.

Abstract

This research examines the discourse of global solidarity in the news surrounding the hashtag #كل_العيون_على_رفح (#AllEyesOnRafah) on Aljazeera Arabic and CNN Arabic news media based on Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis. This research uses descriptive qualitative with data in the form of news texts from the official websites of the two media and related literature. The analysis is conducted through three dimensions: textual, discourse, and social practices. The results show that Aljazeera Arabic consistently builds a narrative of global solidarity with Palestine through emotional diction, intensive coverage, and active interactive on social media. This global solidarity is reinforced by the support of international actors and boycott campaigns as digital resistance to Israel. In contrast, CNN Arabic tends to present this phenomenon neutrally, focusing on the balance of information and the effects of the boycott critically. These findings show that global solidarity is not only represented in texts, but also has an impact on the public, social mobilisation, and pressure on global actors.

Abstract

In 2016, Indonesia was captivated by the sensational cyanide murder case involving Mirna Salihin and Jessica Wongso, which resurfaced in 2023 through Netflix’s documentary Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee, and Jessica Wongso. While public discourse focused on the legal drama, little attention has been given to the linguistic mechanisms shaping perception within such forensic narratives. This study addresses that gap by examining how presuppositions construct meaning and potential bias in the documentary’s discourse. Utilizing George Yule’s presupposition theory within a forensic linguistic framework, the research identifies and categorizes presupposition types embedded in the dialogues. The study applies a qualitative method, collecting fifteen data samples through observation and note-taking of segments containing presuppositional cues. The analysis reveals the presence of 8 existential, 7 factive, 2 lexical, 4 non-factive, 3 counterfactual, and 1 structural presupposition, which indicate that the allegation of murder committed by Jessica Wongso against Mirna Salihin remains inconclusive. These linguistic patterns suggest how narrative framing and implied assumptions may influence audience interpretation of guilt and innocence.Ultimately, this study underscores the role of presupposition analysis as a tool in forensic linguistics for uncovering implicit meaning and assessing the fairness of language in legal discourse.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of love in Zaynab by Muhammad Husain Haykal through the triadic structure of love. The research departs from the assumption that love in the novel is not merely portrayed as romantic attachment but as a relational configuration shaped by personal emotion and socio-cultural constraints. Using a qualitative descriptive method with textual analysis, this study identifies and categorizes narrative evidence into three dimensions: intimacy, passion, and commitment. The findings reveal that intimacy is constructed through emotional openness, secrecy, and psychological attachment, while passion appears in intense affective reactions and longing. However, commitment is predominantly formed through familial authority and social obligation rather than mutual emotional choice. This imbalance among the three dimensions prevents the realization of a harmonious love structure and results in psychological conflict and narrative tragedy. The study demonstrates that love in Zaynab by Muhammad Husain Haykal operates as a complex relational structure in which cultural norms significantly influence emotional experience. By analyzing the interaction among intimacy, passion, and commitment, this research highlights how socio-cultural pressures reshape personal affection and contribute to the tragic development of the protagonist.

Abstract

This study examines how Arabic-language media construct meaning around alleged Gulf elite connections in the Jeffrey Epstein case, a transnational controversy involving issues of legitimacy, secrecy, and institutional authority. While framing research has widely explored domestic political scandals, limited attention has been given to how Arabic-language outlets frame transnational elite allegations within their institutional and geopolitical contexts. Positioned within discourse and media linguistics, this study analyzes how language operates as a symbolic resource in shaping political meaning. Using qualitative content analysis grounded in William A. Gamson’s interpretive package framework, the study analyzes two Arabic-language news articles published by France24 Arabic and WatanOnline. Framing devices (metaphors,  catchphrases, exemplars, depictions, visual images) and reasoning devices (roots, appeals to principle, consequences) are systematically identified to reveal how interpretive packages are constructed. The findings indicate two contrasting orientations. France24 Arabic advances an institutional-procedural frame emphasizing documentation, formal political access, and state legitimacy. In contrast, WatanOnline constructs a network-of-influence frame highlighting secrecy, relational dependency, and concealed mediation. The study extends Gamson’s framing model to transnational elite scandals in Arabic media and demonstrates that framing functions as a linguistic mechanism shaping perceptions of elite legitimacy and political power.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of the Ummi method in learning Al-Qur’an at Al-Ihsan Mosque, Malang, and its role in community empowerment. The Ummi method, known for its structured and systematic approach, enhances reading accuracy and comprehension of Tajwid among the congregation. The findings reveal that the application of this method has significantly improved participants' Quranic reading skills through direct instruction, repetition, and affectionate teaching. Furthermore, Al-Ihsan Mosque has played a vital role in empowering the underprivileged through the effective management of infaq funds, scholarship programs, and basic needs assistance. However, challenges such as limited teaching space and the need for professional human resource management hinder the effectiveness of these initiatives. To optimize the impact, it is recommended to increase learning facilities, strengthen community collaborations, and establish objective assessment tools for aid distribution. Strengthening youth involvement and professional fund management will further enhance the sustainability of these programs, ensuring that community empowerment efforts are both impactful and equitable.

Abstract

The Kanjuruhan Tragedy, which occurred on October 2022 is recorded as one of the biggest football tragedies in the world, right after the Estadio Nacional Tragedy in Peru on May 1964, which claimed 328 lives. One of the main causes of both tragedies was the use of tear gas inside football stadiums, which is actually prohibited by FIFA regulations. This incident triggered a public distrust of the police, who were supposed to ensure security but instead of worsened the situation. This study aims to analyze the signs on media visuals related to the Kanjuruhan Tragedy, which represent public distrust of the police, and to explore the implied meanings that cannot be explicitly displayed on these media visuals. In addition, the study also examines actions that reflect the loss of trust in the authorities. The analytical approach used is Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotics, which includes the analysis of signs, objects, and interpretants. The analysis reveals that Kanjuruhan Tragedy media visuals convey public distrust toward the police, caused by negligence in carrying out their duties. This distrust is depicted through visual elements in the media visuals. Furthermore, the study also uncovers actions taken by the public in response to the loss of trust in the authorities.

Abstract

The mastery of Arabic reading skills (Maharah Qira’ah) among students often faces significant challenges due to the monotony of traditional methods and the lack of interactive media. This research addresses the urgent need for pedagogical innovation by developing a digital educational game based on the Drill Method, designed to transform repetitive linguistic practice into an engaging experience. The study utilized the Research and Development (R&D) method, involving 23 tenth-grade students at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang as the primary research subjects. The development process integrated iSpring Suite with Gemini AI-generated assets to ensure high-quality visual aesthetics and technical stability. Validation results from experts demonstrated exceptional feasibility, with the material expert providing a perfect score of 100% and the media expert scoring 97.92%. Implementation data revealed that the "Reset on Failure" mechanism effectively fostered student precision and cognitive automaticity in reading Arabic text by requiring 100% accuracy to progress. Furthermore, the final evaluation showed a high level of student motivation, reaching 88.04%, as the gamified aesthetic successfully reduced learning boredom and encouraged autonomous study. In conclusion, this edugame provides a validated and highly motivating solution that bridges the gap between rigid traditional exercises and modern interactive technology, proving essential for improving Arabic language acquisition in the digital age.

Abstract

Mahmoud Darwish's poem Bithoqoh Huwiyah reflects the Palestinian people's struggle to maintain their identity amidst the prolonged conflict with Israel. This research departs from the main question: how deixis elements in this poem, such as the use of the words "I", "you", and references to place and time, are able to represent the collective experience of the Palestinian people. This research aims to dig deeper into how deixis elements form meanings that are closely related to the socio-political context. By using descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques, then analyzed using Milles and Huberman's model. The results of the analysis show that persona deixis in this poem does not solely refer to the poet as an individual, but symbolizes the collective voice of the Palestinian people. Meanwhile, the deixis of place and time emphasizes the attachment of the Palestinian people to their lost homeland and the long struggle they face. This study also confirms that language in literature can be a powerful tool to voice resistance to injustice, build solidarity, and strengthen collective identity in socio-political struggles.
