Abstract

Indonesia is an archipelagic country lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, resulting in the country being vulnerable to disaster. Teachers need to accustom students to manage natural disaster situation in a more logical approach. Therefore, it is necessary to develop mathematical problems in disaster contexts. This research is an early stage of developmental research. The purpose of this study was to analyze the needs of teachers and students of mathematical problems in disaster contexts. The participants in this study were a mathematics teacher and 53 Year 7 and 8 students at one of the public junior high school, located in a Tsunami affected area, in Banda Aceh. Data collection involved an open questionnaire, and data analysis was carried out descriptively. The results showed that the teacher often provided mathematical problems in learning but had never read mathematical problems in disaster contexts. Also, only three students had ever read such problems. The results also revealed that nearly half of the students (41.5%) liked to solve mathematical problems. Besides, both the teacher and 71.7% of the students agreed and were willing to participate in the learning process involving mathematical problems in disaster contexts. The results of the study also showed that the mathematical questions in disaster contexts were limited. Thus, it is necessary to develop mathematical problems in disaster contexts.

Abstract

The development of technology in education greatly influences learning strategies. Thus, teachers must adapt and present interesting and technology-based learning, such as e-comics. Therefore, the teacher must see in advance the extent to which students will accept e-comics for use in learning mathematics. This research aimed to determine students' perceptions of the use of e-comics as a media in mathematics learning. This research implemented a quantitative approach with a survey method. The samples were 124 students of Junior High Schools (SMP / MTs) in Aceh. The research data were obtained from questionnaires filled by students which were collected through the TAM (Technology Acceptance Models) framework which was distributed online.  The results showed that students used e-comic as a learning media influenced by their perceived benefits and attitudes towards the use of e-comic. The perceived benefits of students' attitudes have a significant role in their behavioral intention to use e-comic in learning mathematics. This research implies that e-comics has the potential to be used as a media in mathematics learning, especially on material that is considered difficult so that it can attract students' attention.

Abstract

Mastery learning remains a critical challenge in education, often resulting in the need for remedial programs to support students in achieving competency. Despite their importance, existing remedial programs frequently fail to achieve their intended outcomes due to a lack of engaging and efficient instructional tools. To address this gap, this study introduces a novel e-learning-based remedial video designed to enhance student learning on the topic of functions. The research aimed to develop a remedial learning video that meets the criteria for validity, practicality, and effectiveness. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) methodology following the Plomp model, which consists of three phases: preliminary research, prototyping, and assessment. The research was conducted in a high school in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, involving three distinct groups: nine students participated in the readability test, 60 students undertook the diagnostic test, and 18 students engaged in remedial learning activities. Data collection utilized validation sheets for the video, diagnostic and remedial tests, and student response questionnaires, with descriptive analysis applied to evaluate the findings. The results revealed that the e-learning-based remedial video demonstrated strong validity, with expert assessments yielding a score of 86.19% (very valid). Practicality was confirmed by positive student feedback, with a response rate of 92.62%. Effectiveness was also evident, as 95% of students achieved mastery learning following the remedial intervention, and the N-Gain score reflecting improvement in student performance was 0.72 (high). These outcomes underscore the effectiveness of e-learning-based remedial videos as an innovative and interactive solution to address students' lack of mastery learning. The findings contribute to educational practice by offering teachers and students an accessible and effective tool to enhance learning outcomes, with significant potential for broader application.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the mathematical model of student learning behavior. The model is built by analogizing the spread of learning behavior with infectious diseases, which is called the SEIR model. The survey was conducted through filling out a questionnaire on the learning behavior of junior high school students with a population of 1,143 students. The results of the simulation model show that the peak of students' vulnerability to changes in learning behavior increases rapidly in the first two days and will be stable when passing the 150th day. The results of the simulation of the SEIR mathematical model with an incubation period of 365 days found that student learning behavior in Non-Boarding Schools will be stable in on day 198, while in Boarding Schools it will be stable on day 201. Infection cases in Boarding Schools fell to 0 on day 25 while in Non-Boarding Schools decreased on day 21, meaning that infections occurring in Boarding Schools were slower and more resistant long, meaning that the influence of the social environment is very significant on student learning behavior. This study also serves as material for policy formulation for the Aceh Provincial Government regarding the junior high school curriculum.

Abstract

Spatial ability is the ability to imagine, compare, predict, determine, construct, present, and find information from visual stimuli in terms of spatial context that involves manipulation and mental rotation. Students in rural and urban areas have different ways of looking at a problem, especially with regard to spatial. Many opinions state that there are similarities and differences between boys and girls in terms of spatial ability in urban areas, but there is no information about the conditions between male and female students in rural areas. This study aims to describe the spatial ability of junior high school students in rural areas in terms of gender differences. This research is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach. Taking research subjects using snowball sampling technique. The research subjects were six people in one of the junior high schools in Bener Meriah Regency, Aceh Province. Data was collected by means of tests and interviews. Data analysis used qualitative data analysis techniques, namely: data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that the tendency of male students' spatial abilities included five abilities, namely spatial perception, spatial visualization, mental rotation, spatial relations, and spatial orientation, while female students only included four spatial abilities because female students did not meet the mental rotation indicators. In general, both male and female students have difficulty in solving problems related to spatial relations indicators. Therefore, in learning, teachers need to develop students' spatial abilities, especially those related to spatial relations in rural areas, as well as develop abilities with mental rotation indicators, especially for female students.

Abstract

Research on mathematical modeling of learning outcomes remains limited, despite its potential to evaluate educational processes and inform placement decisions in schools, classes, learning resources, and remedial programs. This quantitative study aims to construct a mathematical model in the form of an ordinary differential equation (ODE) to represent the dynamics of students’ learning in a remedial program. The model is developed using empirical data obtained from multiple-choice diagnostic tests designed to identify common learning difficulties and a series of three remedial assessments conducted after e-learning-based interventions. The dataset includes students’ assessment scores and time records during the remedial learning process. The Nelder–Mead method was used to estimate the model parameters, followed by a stability analysis and an RMSE-based evaluation of the model’s accuracy. The model captures changes in student understanding over time and reveals that students with lower initial scores tend to show greater improvements through remedial programs. However, as the duration of the remedial program increases, the rate of score improvement decreases—suggesting a decline in student focus and learning efficiency over time. These findings highlight the nonlinear nature of learning progress in remedial program. The model provides for predicting student outcomes and analyzing the effectiveness of remedial programs. It offers practical implications for optimizing the structure and timing of remedial programs and can support the development of adaptive learning systems tailored to student needs. This research demonstrates the potential of mathematical modeling for decision-making in education.
