Abstract

Democratic Character and Problem Solving Ability Students through Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) at Junior High School. Students' democratic character and problem solving skills are still low. One of the efforts is by implementing the RME approach. This study aims to analyze students' democratic character, students' problem solving ability improvement, and problem solving ability in terms of students' democratic character after learning through the RME. This is the quantitative research with a one group pretest-posttest design. The population in this study was four classes of grade 8 students from one islamic junior high school/madrasah tsanawiyah (MTs) at Takengon, Aceh, Indonesia. The sample technique was simple random sampling. There were 45 students from two of four classes as a sample. The instruments in this study were observation sheets od students democratic character and problem solving test. Data analysis used an percentage of students’ character score, n-gain of students’ problem solving ability, and paired t-test to analyze the increasing of students’ problem solving ability. The results showed that the development of students' democratic character during the learning process through the RME approach was getting better; there was an increase in students' problem solving ability after participating in learning through the RME approach; and students with high and medium problem solving abilities have a good democratic character. The students' democratic character was further developed at the fourth meeting. Students were seen often to give opinions during group discussions, giving opportunities to express opinions for others, daring to respond to their friends' opinions, listening to their friends' opinions well, actively discussing, working on students’ worksheet together, and deliberating to draw conclusions together. Students’ democratic character can be trained through RME which has an impact on increasing their problem-solving ability. Keywords: democratic character, problem solving ability, realistic mathematics education (RME).

Abstract

The implementation of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) requires students to have higher order thinking skills (HOTs), which remain challenging for many Indonesian students. One key component of HOT is mathematical communication skills, which can be improved through the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model. From an Islamic perspective, Sedekah (Sedekah) represents an act of giving that aligns with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 1 objective of poverty alleviation. This study aims to determine the differences in enhancing mathematical communication skills and students' awareness of No-Poverty through PBL learning in the context of Sedekah in Islamic and Regular Schools. This study employed a quantitative approach and a quasi-experimental research design. The population was all students in one Regular School, Banda Aceh and one Islamic School, Aceh Besar, Aceh, Indonesia. This sample included 56 students in an experimental class and 56 in a control class. The instruments in this study were a mathematical communication skill test and a questionnaire assessing students' awareness of No-Poverty. The hypothesis was tested using MANOVA, the Independent t-test, and the two-way ANOVA. The effect size of PBL learning was determined based on the Cohen-d effect size calculation. The findings reveal a significant difference in the improvement of mathematical communication skills and awareness of poverty alleviation between students in regular and Islamic schools. However, no interaction was found between the PBL model contextualized in sedekah and students' educational levels regarding mathematical communication skills and awareness of poverty alleviation. These results suggest that the PBL model effectively enhances students' mathematical communication skills and awareness of poverty alleviation.

Abstract

The integration of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into mathematics education has gained increasing attention in recent years. This study systematically reviews how mathematics contributes to sustainability and aligns with the SDGs. A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines, analysing 31 studies published between 2019 and 2024 from databases such as EBSCO, ERIC, ProQuest, and Taylor & Francis. Content analysis identified key themes, including the SDGs addressed, educational levels, and research methodologies. The findings indicate that most studies focus on SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), primarily in primary and secondary schools. Qualitative and mixed-methods approaches are commonly used, with project-based learning as a frequently applied instructional model. The review confirms that mathematics education plays a vital role in fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and sustainability awareness. However, challenges persist in terms of curriculum development and teacher training. Future research should explore interdisciplinary approaches and expand the integration of diverse SDGs into mathematics education to strengthen its role in addressing global sustainability challenges.
