Abstract

[English]: Students' ability to understand mathematics concepts remains problematic even though conceptual understanding is critical in learning mathematics. Indeed, one of the efforts to develop conceptual understanding by actively engaging students in mathematics learning is to apply the scientific approach with mind mapping. This study aimed to investigate the development of secondary students' conceptual understanding through the use of the scientific approach with mind mapping in the number sequences topic. The present study employed a qualitative descriptive approach which involves 24 ninth-grade students. Two students (S-1 and S-2) who respectively represent low and mid-achieving groups of mathematics ability were selected as the subjects for the focus of the investigation. They were purposively selected based on the results of preliminary test and teacher consultation. Data were collected by administering a conceptual understanding test and semi-structured clinical interview. The results of the test and transcript of the interview were analyzed based on the indicators of conceptual understanding to investigate the students' development of number sequences concepts. The results showed that S-1 fulfilled the indicators of conceptual understanding in all lessons, while S-2 only met one indicator in the third lesson. However, the post-test revealed that the students show significant progress in conceptually understanding the number sequence. The present study concludes that applying scientific approach with mind mapping support students’ development of conceptual understanding. Keywords: Conceptual understanding, Scientific approach, Mind mapping, Number sequences [Bahasa]: Kemampuan siswa dalam memahami konsep matematika masih bermasalah padahal pemahaman konsep merupakan bagian paling penting dalam pembelajaran matematika. Abstract

The general learning behavior has a major impact on the psychological and mental adjustment of students to learn. Therefore, this study reviews relevant studies on the factors causing changes in student learning behavior. The review used PRISMA, so several stages were carried out to filter and collect relevant information. The results of the synthesis revealed 19 broad factors influencing student learning behavior. Furthermore, these factors can be seen in more detail in four main groupings: i) Student learning behavior in the classroom; ii) Student learning behavior outside the classroom; iii) Student learning motivation; and iv) Student learning behavior results. Student learning behavior in the classroom is influenced by motivation, reflection, learning satisfaction, and learning activities. Meanwhile, student learning behavior outside the classroom is influenced by technology, independent learning abilities, learning resources, learning environment, and students’ internal conditions. The final result showed that students with a positive learning environment consistently acquire good knowledge in achieving learning objectives. There are many challenges in forming good student learning behavior. Therefore, this study benefits the education experts, counselors, teachers, parents, and the learning environment by increasing student motivation and satisfaction in learning to minimize the negative impact of changes in student learning behavior.

Abstract

The ability of problem solving is one of essential mathematical abilities in learning mathematics. The facts in the field indicated that the problem solving ability of senior high school students were still low. Adversity Quotient (AQ) was presumed to play a role in the ability of students in solving problems. This research intended to describe the ability of students’ mathematical problem solving in accordance with the steps of IDEAL problem solving viewed from their AQ. The participants were consisted of three students of grade XI in one senior high school in Banda Aceh. The research finding indicates that the problem solving abilities of the students using steps of IDEAL problem solving regarding their AQ are differ. The climber solved problems by using all the steps of IDEAL problem solving, the camper only did four steps, and the quitter did not do any of the steps in solving the problem.

Abstract

Fraction is one of the difficult topic for students. One way to reduce students’ difficulties is to implement Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) by integrating Islamic values such as Sacrifice Worship (Ibadah Kurban). In addition, the use of technology to integrate sacrificial worship in fraction learning is also expected to increase students' interest in learning in the 21st century and can improve students' understanding. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an e-module for learning fractions through RME with the context of Sacrifice worship. The developed e-module contains learning trajectories, live worksheets, videos, and post-tests. This type of research is research and development which follows the stages of Plomp, especially in the prototyping and assessment stages. The instruments in this study were validation sheets. The validators consisted of one mathematics education lecturer and two Banda Aceh City junior high school teachers. Based on the validity test it was concluded that the e-module meets the valid criteria. The implication of this research is the development of e-modules needs to be continued to test practicality and effectiveness.

Abstract

Literature reveals that there are numerous factors that affect students' academic achievement. These factors range from internal factors with varying degrees of influence. Determining the dominant factors is highly useful as part of the effort and the planning of potential actions regarding what can be done to improve students’ academic achievement. The present study employed a systematic literature review method to identify the dominant factors. Results show that there are four dominant factors that affect students’ academic achievement. They are academic motivation, emotional intelligence, teachers, and peers. This finding confirms the complex nature of the factors that affect students’ academic achievement, which involve internal and external factors. Without disregarding the other factors, these findings suggest that schools and parents should pay close attention to the dominant factors in order to improve students’ achievement.
