Abstract

The growing concern over plastic waste pollution and its harmful byproducts, such as CO, CO₂, NOₓ, and SOₓ gases from incineration, necessitates alternative and environmentally responsible waste management strategies. At MAN Insan Cendekia Bengkulu Tengah, a boarding school that manages its own waste, the integration of pyrolysis as a cleaner method for plastic waste treatment offers both practical and educational value. This study aimed to contextualize plastic waste pyrolysis within STEM-based learning to enhance students’ environmental knowledge and attitudes through interdisciplinary instruction. A quasi-experimental two-group pre-test–post-test design was employed, involving 32 students divided equally into control and experimental groups. The control group received STEM instruction using a module and video on plastic pyrolysis, while the experimental group engaged in a more immersive approach involving the same materials supplemented with hands-on pyrolysis activities. Results indicated that the experimental group outperformed the control group, with an environmental knowledge normalized gain (N-gain) score of 0.67 (medium), compared to 0.47 (low) in the control group. Additionally, the experimental group achieved higher environmental attitude scores (85) than the control group (76). These findings demonstrate that STEM education incorporating contextual, multimodal, and practical components can significantly enhance students’ conceptual understanding and engagement with environmental issues. The study contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting experiential STEM education as an effective approach for fostering environmental awareness and action in secondary education settings.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the ability of mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) to reduce styrofoam waste by observing the decrease in styrofoam weight and survival rate over one week. The method used is an experiment with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 treatments (P0, P50, P100, P150) and 4 replications. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The research stages include container preparation, larvae, stocking, feeding, and maintenance. The results show that the weight loss of styrofoam occurred at P50 (18.5%), P100 (22.75%), and P150 (36%). Meanwhile, the control group (P0) only experienced a weight loss of 1.5%. This indicates that the greater the number of T. molitor, the greater the weight loss of styrofoam. The highest survival rate for T. molitor was observed at P50, with a decrease in numbers of only 12.5%. At P150, the decrease was 16.8%, and at P100, it was 28.75%. This decrease is suspected to be caused by competition among T. molitor, population density, and a lack of nutrients despite the addition of supplementary feed. Based on the analysis of the results, it can be concluded that T. molitor is capable of reducing styrofoam waste, with the highest survival rate in the P50 group.

Abstract

Kaur Regency is a high-potential vannamei shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) aquaculture area in Bengkulu Province that frequently experiences high mortality rates due to vibriosis caused by pathogenic Vibrio spp. The high shrimp mortality rates resulting in decreased production or crop failure due to attacks or infections of vibriosis disease. Data on these Vibrio spp. in traditional Kaur ponds is required for illness prevention. To identify pathogenic Vibrio spp., this study included purposeful sampling and testing, as well as data analysis. Seven Gram-negative isolates (OALF 1, 2, 3, and 5 from shrimp organs; WALF 7, 8, and 10 from pond water) produced green/yellow colonies on TCBSA medium. Biochemical tests (Gram KOH 3%, catalase, oxidase, fermentation (O/F), TSIA, MIO, lysine decarboxylase, gelatin, Simon citrate, methyl red, urease, glucose, maltose, lactose, mannitol, and sorbitol) revealed that OALF isolates from vannamei shrimp organs have morphological and physiological similarities to the pathogenic species Vibrio parahaemolyticus, whereas WALF isolates from pond water are similar to the pathogenic species V. pluvialis. The study identified Vibrio spp. as the cause of vibriosis in L. vannamei in traditional Kaur ponds, emphasizing the need for improved water and feed management, as well as proper pond environmental practices, potentially including probiotics derived from healthy local shrimp digestive bacteria, to reduce losses in vaname aquaculture in Kaur Regency, Bengkulu. Abstract

Pengukuran dilakukan setiap 7 hari sekali selama empat pekan.
