Abstract

Integrating science concepts with real contexts, including the COVID-19 context, is essential in the learning process to become meaningful. As one of the public education, schools are expected to provide students with generic skills on dealing with a pandemic using the concepts learned at school. Training on integrating science concepts with real contexts in learning was carried out to teachers and students at Junior High School 08 Rejang Lebong, Bengkulu Province, Indonesia. Training was conducted through ICARE (Introduction, Connection, Application, Reflection, and Extend). The results show that teachers can integrate science concepts with the COVID-19 context. These concepts are respiratory organs, blood cells, antibodies, vaccines, and healthy life. After the activity, the teacher designed science lessons plan to integrate concepts with the previously discussed context. It is hoped that the science learning carried out will be meaningful so that students no longer feel bored participating in learning, especially online learning.

Abstract

Background: In the scientific community, there is no consensus that paraquat, a widely used herbicide, has a strong relationship with the occurrence of Parkinson's disease. A reliable epidemiological explanation of how paraquat can induce parkinsonism is urgently needed because it relates to the agriculture community's potential public health problem. Objective: In this study, mice exposed to aerosols of paraquat solution were assessed by behavioral assays designed to observe whether mice exposed to paraquat aerosols develop cardinal symptoms of Parkinson's disease, such as tremor-at-rest, bradykinesia, rigidity, and postural instability. Methods: To obtain the intended information, we carried out the observation on distal extremities, catalepsy test, wire suspension test, and swimming test consisting of the head position sub-test, the involvement of limbs sub-test, and the swimming direction test, respectively, to both the group of mice exposed to paraquat aerosols and the one which is not. Results: According to the result of the independent-samples t-test calculation on the data obtained from behavioral assays, a significant difference is shown only by the wire suspension test used to assess the development of forelimb rigidity and not the others. Conclusion: Therefore, this study showed that daily exposure for a week to paraquat aerosols insignificantly causes tremor-at-rest, bradykinesia, and postural instability in studied mice but dramatically affects their forelimb performance in the form of rigidity.

Abstract

Mercury (Hg) is a pollutant that is dangerous because it is toxic when it accumulates in living tissue and is difficult to decompose in the environment, if it is polluted it will be very dangerous for the environment and living things around it. In this study the aim was to determine the mercury content of the morphometrics of fish in the Selikat River, Tambang Saweak Village. Based on the results of the study, it was found that 2 species of fish were exposed to mercury and not exposed, namely Cere fish (Gambusia affinis) exposed to mercury of 0.47 mg/Kg and Putian fish (Rasbora argyrotaenia) exposed to mercury of 0.43 mg/Kg. Where in the two fish there are morphometric differences, namely differences in body height (TB), tail stem height (TBE), dorsal fin length (PDO) and anal fin length (PA). This happens because fish that are exposed to toxic compounds or heavy metals such as mercury (Hg) can experience tissue damage and affect the body size and body shape of the fish. If fish exposed to mercury are eaten by humans, it will have consequences for human health such as poisoning and can cause ataxia, decreased speech and hearing ability, tremors, dysarthria and ultimately death.

Abstract

All schools, both middle and high school levels, are preparing to implement the Merdeka Curriculum in the following year. Learning innovations in the Merdeka Curriculum must be accompanied by the ability to assess learning outcomes and processes appropriately. Assessments are no longer based on paper and pencil tests but must authentically assess student skills. Through authentic assessment as an alternative assessment, students are accustomed to carrying out work according to job demands, where tasks are designed to follow real-world replication. Authentic assessment has the potential to improve learning for students ready to work in the real world. The ability to design authentic assessments is provided in this activity through the I-CARE design at SMPN 03 Lebong and MAN Rejang Lebong. This activity was attended by 30 teachers from both schools. The results show that the majority of teachers can distinguish between diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment functions, besides being able to understand the types of authentic assessment and being able to design authentic assessments to support student-centered learning by the character of the Merdeka Curriculum.

Abstract

This research was carried out in September-October 2023 at the Bengkulu University ex-situ turtle conservation area, aiming to provide comprehensive knowledge about roaming patterns, active times, and movement areas in artificial habitats so that they can be used to develop effective conservation strategies for maintaining the preservation of C. amboinensis in the ex-situ turtle conservation area, Bengkulu University. This study observed 11 individual turtles (4 females and 7 males). This research uses literature study methods and direct observations in the field. The results obtained showed that C. amboinensis had: high mobility because all artificial areas were explored. The active time of C. amboinensis is in the morning and evening. The range of movement of males is greater than that of females. Mounting activity occurs spontaneously or directly when male C. amboinensis and female C. amboinensis meet in a certain area. The roaming pattern of C. amboinensis occurs randomly and the range of movement between male and female C. amboinensis is very different.
