Abstract

South Kalimantan, the original home of the Banjarese, is one of the most exclusively Muslim provinces in Indonesia. Therefore, in order to understand this region one should not only study the doctrines and rituals of Islam but also the manifestation of Islam in socio-cultural and political realities. The study of Islam in its social dimensions would provide us the ability to explain, predict and even to some extent control the religious tendencies in society. Based on current statistics and contemporary media reports, this paper presents a number of social issues related to religion that should be scientifically studied such as the historical development of Islam in the region, the role of the ulama, Islam and local culture, local politics and public rituals, drug abuses and the influences of the new media. These contemporary socio-religious issues are very important but still scarcely researched.

Abstract

The problematic relations between religion and science do not only occur in Western societies but also in Muslim societies. While early modern Muslim reformists strongly encouraged Muslims to adopt modern sciences, later reformists argued that modern sciences should be Islamized. The idea of Islamization of knowledge has been widely discussed and contested. Another alternative to the idea of Islamization is integration. The integration should be dynamic in the sense that they interact in a mutually illuminating, enriching, and renewing mode. This paper presents the possibility of dynamic integration between Psychology and Sufism. Some modern psychologists argue that Sufism is not scientific because it is not based on empirical observation, while some others say that modern psychology’s denial of metaphysical realities is in fact not based on strong evidence but assumptions. In the light of integration, instead of opposing the two disciplines to one another, one actually can draw the lines where modern psychology and Sufism meet and separate. The rational and empirical basis of modern psychology can be enriched, renewed, and illuminated by the metaphysical and spiritual basis of Sufism, and vise-versa.

Abstract

The article will discuss various viewpoints on the issues affecting women in Islam, and how they influence the views regarding women education. Their views generally can be divided into conservative, progressive and philosophical. All these views, in general, regard that like men, women are obliged to search for knowledge. In Indonesia, since the 19th century, women have already been involved in learning religion. However, for some cultural reasons, in this period, the access for women to modern education was still limited. On the other hand, from the 20th century up to now, like male Muslims, Indonesian female Muslim have more opportunies in education. Moreover, the symbolic-philosophy of complementary relations between male and female can also become an alternative to conservative or liberal philosophy of education

Abstract

This article discusses how Indonesian state manages its religious diversity. The state policies on religious diversity cannot be understood without analyzing the history of how the founding fathers decided to choose Indonesia as neither secular nor Islamic country, but somewhere between the two. The author discusses three topics, namely the recognized religions, muslim's fear of christianization, and dialogue and inter-religious harmony. Based on the Decree No.1/1965, Confucianism was one of six religions recognized by the state. However, in the Soeharto era, around 1979, this religion was dropped from the list, and only after his fall Confucianism has been rehabilitated, and even the Chinese New Year has been included as one of the national holidays in Indonesia. In terms of muslim-christian relations, there were tensions since 1960s, particularly dealt with the issue of the high number of Muslims who converted to Christianity. It was in this situation that in 1967 a newly built Methodist Church in Meulaboh, Aceh, was closed by Muslims, arguing that the Church was a concrete example of the aggressiveness of Christian missions because it was built in a Muslim majority area. Since the Meulaboh case, the Muslims consistently insisted the government to accommodate their four demands: (1) restriction on establishing new places of worship; (2) restriction onreligious propagation, and control of foreign aid for religious institutions; (4) Islamic religion classes should be given to Muslim students studying in Christian schools; (5) inter-religious marriage should not be allowed. Apart from these contested issues, the government and religious leaders have been trying to avoid conflict and to establish cooperation and peace among religious groups in the country through inter-religious dialogues, either organized by the government or sponsored by the leaders of religious groups themselves. The author argues that specific socio-political contexts should be taken into consideration to understand state policies making concerning religious diversity. Hence, all debates and compromises achieved afterwards usually do not go beyond the neither secular nor Islamic compromise.

Abstract

Book Review: Ahmad Baso, NU Studies: Pergolakan Pemikiran antara Fundamentalisme Islam dan Fundamentalisme Neo-Liberal (Jakarta: Erlangga, 2006), 510 halaman + xxi.Although this book is entitled NU Studies, which gives one the impression that it constitutes an academic study about the ideological developments within NU, it is in fact more so an effort on the part of the author to advocate and strengthen his own position and opinions against those who hold opposing ideas, be they within NU or outside of the organization. As a result of this aim, it's not surprising that many contradictions and inconsistencies have made their way into the book. This is mainly because the author has employed a strategy of rejecting ideas from his opposition, often without basis, whilst promoting his own views which he considers to be appropriate with the ideology of Ahlussunnah Waljamaah as held by NU.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v13i3.564

Abstract

This paper discusses the discourses of Indonesian Muslim intellectuals on the works of Ali Shariati and Hassan Hanafi in Indonesia’s New Order. The literature discussed here consists primarily of the articles written by prominent Indonesian Muslim intellectuals, and most of the articles were introductions to the translated books of Shariati and Hanafi. The articles shows us that Shariati’s and Hanafi’s ideas were received, interpreted, criticized, and appropriated by the intellectuals in order to make them relevant to the Indonesian context. The idealization of Shariati as an intellectual, a more open attitude towards Shi’ism, and the discussion of his socialist tendencies could not be separated from the demands of the Indonesian political situation during the New Order. Likewise, Hanafi’s ideas on the relation between religion, ideology and development, and the Islamic Left and Occidentalism found their relevance to the Indonesian socio-political context. Therefore, the discourses are elements of the New Order’s Islamic discourses.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v25i2.7181
