Abstract

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is one of the most prevalent conditions, and it frequently coexists with vascular disease in other parts of the body. Early diagnosis is important for improving the patient’s quality of life and for reducing the risk of serious secondary vascular events such as acute myocardial infraction (AMI) or stroke. The best noninvasive measure for identifying the presence of occlusive arterial disease is the ankle-brachial index. Lower extremity PAD most frequently presents with pain during ambulation, which is known as “intermittent claudication”. Some relief of symptoms is possible with exercise, pharmacotherapy, and cessation of smoking. The occurrence of PAD is caused by insufficiency in the arteries due to the occurrence of the atherosclerosis process. Aspirin inhibits platelet synthesis through irreversible acetylation of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes on platelets. Because platelets do not have a nucleus, platelets are not able to form (COX) enzymes during their lifetime. As a result, the synthesis of thromboxane A2 (TXA2) which plays a major role in platelet aggregation is inhibited. Thus, long-term aspirin in the long term can prevent myocardial infarction and PAD.

Abstract

Gamma-Glutamil Transferase (GGT) enzyme is a widely distributed transpeptidase in various body tissues. This enzyme is located in cell membranes and cytoplasm of hepatocytes. In addition, the expressions of the GGT enzyme is found in the kidneys, lungs, pancreas, blood vessel endothelium, nerve cells, and blood plasma. It has been used routinely in clinic to diagnose liver damage caused by alcoholism. The normal value of plasma GGT activity is 0–40 U / l. Normally, the GGT activity in blood plasma is low, but liver damage or bile ducts obstruction will increase it. There were significant association between the GGT activities in plasma and various diseases such as cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome such as diabetes mellitus and obesity, neurological and neurodegenerative diseases and others various diseases. Related to the measurement of GGT enzyme activity is cheap and easy to do, it's very potential to be developed for marker to diagnosis, prognosis, and further evaluation of various diseases. Further studies are needed to apply it for to be an accurate biomarker for various diseases

Abstract

Chronic disease is a worldwide health issue. The prevalence of chronic disease is 6,7 billion people worldwide, and has increased over the time. Chronic disease is a noncommunicable disease, but chronic disease is a persistant disease and resulting in substansial years of life lost. One of the chronic diseases is hypertension or high blood pressure. The prevalence of hypertension is 1,2 billion people worldwide and increasing due to an aging population and increasing prevalence of obesity. Hypertension is multifactorial disease involving genetic factors and environmental factors. Aparts from these two factors, behaviors factors can be increasing risk factor for hypertension, such as smooking and excess salt consumption. AHA (American Heart Association) hypertension guidelines, hypertension is diagnosed when blood pressure is consistently >130 for systolic pressure, and or >80 mmHg for diastolic pressure. Hypertension have a significant effects due to CVD (Cardiovascular disease) such as hearth failure, myocardial infarction, stroke and death. Hypertension in older adults have a adverse effects and exacerbated by a decrease in body function and quality, such as mechanical hemodynamic changes, arterial stiffness, neurohormonal and declining renal function, so the management strategies for hypertension in older adults must consider from various aspects, such as comorbidities factors, pyscho-social factors. The management strategies for hypertension can be used non-pharmacological therapy to reduce the risk of hypertension severity and provide appropriate pharmacological therapy according to the patient’s condition, so that it can provide appropriate results.

Abstract

Almost 60 million people worldwide have recovered from pulmonary tuberculosis since 2000, but many of them develop post-tuberculous lung disease. The disease results from a complex interaction between the disease-causing organism, the host, and environmental factors, and this affects the long-term airway. People with this disease have a shorter life expectancy and an increased risk of tuberculosis recurrence. Bronchiectasis is a disease of the dilation of the bronchial tubes which is characterized by decreased mucociliary transport function. It can also be caused by a bacterial infection with Post Tuberculosis Obstructive Syndrome (SOPT). SOPT is a lung disorder characterized by chronic airway obstruction due to complications arising from post-treatment pulmonary tuberculosis. This case describes a patient with bronchiectasis and SOPT who came with symptoms of shortness of breath accompanied by a long cough. From the results of the physical examination and supporting examinations, a working diagnosis was obtained in the form of infected brochiectasis accompanied by post-tuberculosis obstructive syndrome. The patient was then given therapy in the form of oxygenation, nebulized bronchodilators, corticosteroid injections, and antibiotics. In addition, patients are also given chest physiotherapy and a high-calorie, high-protein diet.

Abstract

Background: The therapeutic properties of the ethanol extract derived from the stem bark of Rhizophora apiculata have been investigated. Nevertheless, there is a lack of studies regarding its acute toxicity. Objective: This research aims to evaluate the toxicity of ethanolic extract of R. apiculata bark by examining histological changes in the liver and kidney of rats. Method: The ethanol extract of R. apiculata bark was administered using a fixed-dose approach in preliminary and primary tests, focusing on the kidneys and liver of male Sprague Dawley rats. Four treatment groups received doses of 5, 50, 300, and 2000 mg/kg BW, while one group served as the control. An uninterrupted observation period of 14 days was conducted to determine any indications of acute toxicity in these animals. On the fifteenth day, the rats were terminated. Results: This study indicated the absence of any toxic manifestations, such as tremors, excessive salivation, convulsions, coma, and mortality. Nevertheless, it caused histological damage to the rats’ liver and kidney when administered at doses 300 and 2000 mg/kg BW. Conclusion: While the administration of R. apiculata extracts at doses of 300 and 2000 mg/kgBW resulted in histological damage to the kidneys and livers of the rats, it did not induce any immediate symptoms.

Abstract

Dyslipidemia is a lipid metabolism disorder in the form of an increase and decrease in the lipid fraction which is one of the high-risk factors for coronary heart disease and other non-communicable diseases. Rhizophora apiculata contains secondary metabolites in the form of flavonoid, tannin, alkaloid, saponin, and terpenoid which are thought to have the effect of preventing an increase in total cholesterol and triglyceride. This research is an experimental study with a posttest-only control group design carried out for 30 days using 30 experimental animals of Rattus norvegicus Sprague Dawley. There were 6 treatment groups, KN which was only given standard feed, K+ which was given quail egg yolk induction, simvastatin 10 mg/day, and K- which was given quail egg yolk induction. On the other hand, P1, P2, and P3 were given quail egg yolk induction, respectively. and leaf extract of Rhizophora apiculata with doses of 56mg/KgBW,m28mg/KgBW, and 14mg/KgBW. Then the rats were terminated using ketamine xylazine and blood was taken through the heart to be examined for total cholesterol and triglyceride using spectrophotometry. The results of the normality Shapiro-Wilk and Levene test p-value>0.05. In the One-way Anova test, cholesterol levels were 0.006 and triglyceride 0,002 (p-value

Abstract

Medicinal plants are plants that have medicinal properties or uses and are used to cure and prevent various diseases. Medicinal plants, both leaves, stems and roots, are partly used by the community for traditional or alternative medicine. The use of medicinal plants has evolved from generation to generation, with knowledge being passed down from generation to generation. In its utilization, medicinal plants have good opportunities, such as they are often sold as food supplements, use by the public is increasingly popular and promises minimal side effects and has challenges that must be faced, namely the need for scientific evaluation, a long time with large capital, there is a distance between preclinical models and its applications used in clinical trials as well as the lack of clinical trial data. Many drugs developed from natural sources have had revolutionary impact in medicine, including antibiotics, antiparasitic, antimalarial, lipid control agents, immunosuppressants for organ transplantation, and anticancer drugs. Medicinal plants that have properties or uses as medicinal ingredients which are currently being researched include miswak plants, centella asiatica plants, and mangrove plants.
