Abstract

Aphis craccivora is one of the important pests on yard long bean. It causes direct damage and also has an indirect effect as insect vector of the Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV). The research was done to test the effectiveness of chitosan in suppressing aphid population growth, feeding preference and its ability in transmiting BCMV. Chitosan with concentration ranging of 0.1–1.0% were applied on leaves using spraying method at 1 day before BCMV transmission. BCMV was transmitted by using 3 individuals of viruliferous aphids on each plant. Results show that chitosan treatments on leaves or plants significantly suppressed the population and feeding preferences of A. craccivora. Further, treated plants showed lower disease incidence, severity and BCMV titre significantly compared with untreated control plants. The positive effects of chitosan in suppressing population growth as feeding preferences and BCMV transmission might be due to the anti-feedant effect of chitosan on A. craccivora. Based on the result, chitosan at concentration 0.9% is the most effective concentration in suppressing BCMV and its vector A. craccivora.

Abstract

Papaya mealybug, Paracoccus marginatus Williams & Granara de Willink (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), is an invasive pest that was detected for the first time in Indonesia in 2008. One of the common natural enemies is the predatory beetle Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). The research was conducted with the objectives to determine the biology, life table parameters, and predation of C. montrouzieri on P. marginatus. Observation of biological and life table parameters and predation was conducted by introducing the predators into Petri dishes containing mealybugs. Eggs of C. montrouzieri hatched in 4.35 days. Mean developmental periods for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th instar larvae were 4.23; 4.21; 5.84; 5.93 days, respectively. The mean pre-pupal and pupal periods were 1.95 and 7.55 days, respectively. The longevity of male adults was 51.34 days, while that of females was 83.39 days. The number of eggs laid by a single female averaged 198.49. The net reproductive rate (Ro) was 117.11 individu/female/generation, intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was 0.073 individu/female/day, mean generation time (T) was 64.776 days, doubling time (Dt) was 9.426 days, and finite rate of increase (λ) was 1.076 per day.  The 4th instar larvae of C. montrouzieri was the most voracious with numbers of P. marginatus eggs, 1st, 2nd, 3rd instar nymphs or adults consumed were 188.0; 53.4; 44.0; 26.8; or 15.6; respectively. Manly's preference index suggested that larvae, as well as adults of C. montrouzieri, preferred eggs and 1st instar nymphs of P. marginatus over other mealybug stages. Our study indicates the high potential of C. montrouzieri in the biological control of P. marginatus.

Abstract

Mass rearing techniques for the production of Spodoptera frugiperda larvae in large quantities as research materials is important to be developed. Baby corn has the potential to be observed as alternative feed for mass rearing of fall armyworms. However, the biology and life table of S. frugiperda feeding on baby corn has not been studied. This research aims to study the morphology, biology, and life table of S. frugiperda fed on baby corn. Larvae of F1 fall armyworm were reared singly and fed with baby corn, after pupation it was moved to containers. Thirty pairs of adults were reared in a cage filled maize plant. Observations conducted daily from the eggs until the adult died. Results showed variations in the color and size of the eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Developmental periods of eggs, larvae, and pre-pupae were 2.47, 14.96, and 1.83l days. Pupal period was 9.75 days (male) and 8.81 days (female). The life cycle were 37.69 days (male), and 37.7 days (female). Duration of pre-oviposition, oviposition, post-oviposition were 1.60, 7.90, and 2.26 days. Adult longevity was 11.34 days (male) and 11.76 days (female). The average number of eggs laid was 1.365,86/female with a hatch rate of 94,68%. Survival curve of S. frugiperda was type I, with GRR  of 1.442,49 individuals/generations, and  the Ro was 1.342,77 individuals/females/generation. Ther was 0.23 individual/female/day, the T  was 31.23 days, and the DT was 3.01 days. This result showed that baby corn can be an alternative feed for mass rearing of S. frugiperda.

Abstract

A predatory Lepidoptera that has the potential to be a biological control agents of the soft scale insect (Coccidae) on coffee plants (Coffea spp.) was found in Sukabumi, West Java. However, information regarding the species name of predatory Lepidoptera has never been reported in Indonesia. Literature for morphological identification of this predatory Lepidoptera species is limited. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify predator species molecularly. Predators were collected from coffee plantations that were infested by soft scale in Sukabumi, West Java. Identification using the PCR procedures of mitochondrial COI gene was carried out in the laboratory. The results show that the sample DNA sequences (629 bp) has a similarity level of 95.67% (GenBank) and 95.37% (BOLD Systems) to the Autoba rubra Hampson species. Based on phylogeny analysis, the sample is also closely related to Mataeomera spp. The DNA sequences alignment variation of sample and four species voucher A. rubra in the GenBank database was 7.58%. Therefore, it can be concluded that the predatory Lepidoptera preying on soft scale insects on coffee plants in Sukabumi are most closely related to A. rubra.

Abstract

This article constructs a theology of fair wages as an Ecclesiologi-cal practice for contemporary Indonesian churches. Many church workers in Indonesia experience exploitation legitimized through distorted theologies of service, kenosis, and servant leadership. Using practical theology methodology with Richard Osmer's four-task framework, this research identifies theological, historical, and socio-cultural factors contributing to wage injustice within ecclesiastical institutions. The normative construction draws upon biblical foundations, including the prophetic tradition's critique of labor exploitation (Jer. 22:13; Mal. 3:5), Jesus' affirmation that workers deserve their wages (Luk. 10:7), and Paul instructions regarding compensation for church workers (1Tim. 5:17-18). Dogmatic foundations encompass imago Dei anthropology, symmetrical kenosis christology, and koinonia ecclesiology. This article argues that fair wages constitute an authentic ecclesiological practice that reflects the church's identity as the body of Christ and proposes transformative strategies at the theological, structural, and cultural levels.
