Abstract

Junior high school students in completing social arithmetic material often fail to think critically, so they need help using scaffolding to help critical thinking skill. This qualitative research is a case study of two junior high school students who failed to think critically. Data were obtained through task-based interviews. The tests used in this study were 2 social arithmetic questions that required students' critical thinking skills in solving them. Data analysis used the flow model analysis technique developed by Miles and Huberman (2014) which consisted of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The researcher uses research diligence to ensure the credibility of the data. The results of this study indicate that Subject 1's critical thinking failure lies in the components of interpretation, and inference. Subject 2 failed to think critically on the components of interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, and explanation. The scaffolding given to overcome the failure of critical thinking in subject 1 and subject 2 is the Anghileri’s level 2 scaffolding, namely explaining, reviewing, and restructuring.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the creative thinking skills of students in solving problems related to the Pythagorean Theorem using Desmos application. This descriptive research involved 3 Junior High School students in grade 9 in Sidoarjo (Indonesia) who each had high, medium, and low ability backgrounds. The task in the form of questions consisted of two questions asking students to create two different triangles. The results of the analysis showed that high-ability students were able to create two different triangles if they were given sides 3 and 4 in the form of a right triangle and an equilateral triangle. Students with moderate and low abilities were able to draw right triangles with Desmos, but had difficulty drawing isosceles triangles. Both of them drew an isosceles triangle, but with side lengths of 3, 4, and 6. These results illustrate that the use of Desmos helps students' ideas in finding answers in drawing triangles, but the basic abilities that students have can be an obstacle in completing the given tasks.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the creativity and creative process of students with high, medium, and low levels of creativity. This qualitative research involved 6 Senior High School students in grade XI, 2 students at each level of creativity. The data collection technique uses assignments to make Geogebra applets that are analyzed with document analysis methods and interviews related to students' creative processes that are analyzed with interactive models. The research results show that the Geogebra applets produced by students are different at each level. The higher the level, the Geogebra applets are the more complex in use of Geogebra tools, providing many elements of novelty from the examples given, relevant to the task, and effective in achieving the set goals. Furthermore, the student's creative process with the stages of synthesizing ideas, generating ideas, planning the ideas, and applying ideas at each level has a different process. High creativity students go through each creative process stage well and repeat several stages to produce the Geogebra applet as in the assignment. Meanwhile, students with medium and low creativity are not good at going through each stage of the creative process.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the metacognition processes of students in solving math problems with the assistance of Chat-GPT using a qualitative method and a case study approach. The research subjects are two eighth-grade students from a junior high school in Surabaya, selected through purposive sampling, with one subject representing successful students and the other representing unsuccessful students in the initial problem-solving test (PST). Data were collected through the initial PST, Chat-GPT-assisted PST, and interviews, then analyzed using metacognitive indicators: planning, monitoring, and evaluation. The successful subject actively engaged with Chat-GPT's answers, using metacognition processes to rethink their understanding, connect with prior knowledge, consider strategies, check steps, adjust errors, and verify solutions. Their errors stemmed from misunderstandings and incorrect information from Chat-GPT, but they adjusted and corrected their work upon prompt. In contrast, the unsuccessful subject only showed metacognitive engagement at the planning stage, struggling to understand the problem and prerequisite algebra material. They relied solely on Chat-GPT's answers without understanding or evaluating them, leading to ineffective problem-solving. The difference in metacognition processes between the subjects was attributed to cognitive factors, such as information received from Chat-GPT's answers, understanding of prerequisite material, and ability to comprehend the mathematical problem

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to investigate mathematics teacher educators’ (MTE) knowledge in noticing preservice teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) on the hierarchical classification of the quadrilateral. A multiple case study was conducted to analyze the responses of ten MTEs in an online moderated-forum group discussion (M-FGD) from their written work on the MTE-PCK test completed prior to the M-FGD. The PCK test consisted of two tasks: the task that examines MTEs’ knowledge to predict pre-service teachers’ reason in representing the hierarchical classification of quadrilateral in Venn diagrams, and the task that examines MTEs’ knowledge in making a flowchart as a recommendation to mathematics teacher to analyze the validity of quadrilateral classification. Results show that the MTEs indicate two considerations of noticing pre-service teachers’ PCK on the quadrilateral classification: by definition and properties of quadrilaterals and by the visual appearance of quadrilaterals. Despite this, 20% of them were indicated to perform a lack of understanding of the hierarchical classification of quadrilaterals, as indicated by invalid flowcharts of validating the hierarchical classification of the quadrilateral.

Abstract

Proof of geometry is a topic that involves mathematical reasoning abilities and relates to perseverance involving hard work, the spirit of achievement, and self-confidence. The current important problem that occurs at this time is that students who are future teachers of mathematics still experience difficulties in compiling proofs, especially those who are not challenged to work hard. This qualitative research explores mathematics teacher candidates' reasoning abilities and perseverance in proving geometric theorems. Therefore, the research design used a case study. There were three participants in this study, and they were student prospective mathematics teachers' s taking geometry courses. Data were collected through working documents, open questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews and were analyzed using iterative techniques consisting of data condensation, data exposure, and verification. The study's results showed that students' prospective teachers did not prioritize proof in solving geometry problems, even though they worked hard to solve the problems independently until they were finished. The students' perseverance also impacts their mathematical reasoning in proving geometric theorems. Students with more hard work values tend to have more reasoning values. The results of this study have implications that there needs to be an effort from the teacher to get used to giving proof questions to support students' perseverance and mathematical reasoning abilities.
