Abstract

The aim of this research was to discover the relationship between teachers' and students' beliefs in mathematics. The sample consisted of two mathematics teachers, twenty eight students from 10th grade natural science 6 (X IPA 6) and twenty eight students from 10th grade natural science 10 (X IPA10) at state senior high school 5 Semarang. The data were collected from questionnaires and guided interviews on beliefs about mathematics. The research results showed that both of the mathematics teachers had platonist beliefs. It was found specifically that 4.76% of students in class X IPA 6 consistently had instrumentalist beliefs, 85.71% were consistent with their platonist beliefs, and 9.52% consistently had problem solving beliefs; while in class X IPA 10, 4.76% consistently showed instrumentalist beliefs, 80.95% were consistent with their platonist beliefs, and 14.29% consistently had problem solving beliefs. This indicates that there is a relationship between teachers' and students' beliefs, namely the tendency towards platonist beliefs; and also that the teacher's beliefs influence the student's beliefs.

Abstract

Collaborative problem solving is an important skill to be mastered in education and work. Collaborative problem solving helps reduce the failure of individual problem solving. This type of research is a descriptive qualitative research that aims to describe the collaborative problem solving ability of grade 7 junior high school students in solving contextual problems of linear equations of one variable. The subjects in this study were six students who were divided into two heterogeneous groups, namely: a group of students consisting of one student each with high, medium and low mathematics abilities. The other group consisted of 2 students with low math ability and 1 student with high math ability. The results showed that the high, medium, and low math ability groups were more successful in solving the given problems than the low and high math ability groups. Both heterogeneous groups designed and implemented problem-solving activities fairly well. But for more complex problems, both groups could not solve well. Students with high mathematical abilities in both groups dominated and contributed more to the solution. Medium ability students are encouraged to be actively involved and contribute to problem solving. While students with low ability are more likely to be passive but one of the low ability students in the high and low groups is quite encouraged and contributes enough in problem solving.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the folding back process of 10th grade students with field-dependent (FD) and field-independent (FI) cognitive styles in solving decimal problems. This research was conducted explorative with a qualitative descriptive approach. The subjects in this study were two students grade X at SMA Al Muslim Surabaya. The subjects chosen based on a different of the FI-FD cognitive style was carried out by giving a cognitive style test, then a group of students with a cognitive style of FI and a group of students with a cognitive style of FD were selected. This results is the GFI subject can determine the definition of a decimal number when presenting a decimal number on a ruler and at that time the GFI subject experiences folding back. Folding back also occurs when the GFI subject determines the size ratio of decimals, decimal number operations and when converting decimal numbers into fractions and percentages. Then for GFD subjects must be given a stimulus first using the original numbers given commas and zeros, then the GFD subject changes his opinion on decimal numbers. Keywords: Folding back, decimal problem, field-dependent (FD), field-independent (FI), cognitive styles
