Abstract

Creative thinking skills play an important role in enabling students to generate various ideas and strategies when solving open-ended mathematics problems. This study aims to describe students' creative thinking skills in solving open-ended mathematics problems with the help of Mathigon, based on their mathematical ability levels (high, medium, and low). This study employs a qualitative case study approach involving six students selected based on the categories of mathematical ability, adaptability to digital technology, and fluency in oral communication. Data were collected through a mathematical ability test, Mathigon-based problem-solving tasks, and in-depth interviews. Data analysis was conducted based on creative thinking indicators: fluency, flexibility, and novelty. The results showed that students with high mathematical ability met all indicators. In contrast, students with medium mathematical ability showed varying results (one student met all indicators, another student only showed fluency). Students with low mathematical ability did not show flexibility but showed potential in fluency and novelty. This study indicates that Mathigon, as an interactive medium, supports the development of students' creative thinking skills in solving open-ended mathematics problems at various ability levels.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the problem-solving processes of students in solving contextual problems related to the Pythagorean Theorem based on their learning styles. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach involving three students representing visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles. Data were collected through written tests and semi-structured interviews, and analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results show that students demonstrate different ways of thinking in constructing problem-solving processes. Visual learners tend to use diagrams and visual representations to organize information. Auditory learners demonstrate a sequential problem-solving process through verbal reasoning and internal dialogue. Meanwhile, kinesthetic learners engage with the problem through physical and spatial imagination using movement and gestures. Although some parts of the process are expressed through different forms, such as verbal explanation or mental reflection, the findings show that students construct understanding and connect mathematical concepts with contextual situations. These results emphasize that differences in learning styles are reflected in how students think, represent, and process problems

Abstract

This study aims to explore the critical thinking processes of junior high school students in posing, modifying, and validating problems involving Systems of Linear Equations in Two Variables with the support of GeoGebra. Using Ennis’s (2022) theoretical framework, the study analyzes six indicators of critical thinking: focus, reasoning, inference, contextual understanding, clarity, and overview. A qualitative descriptive case study method was employed with three eighth-grade students of varying mathematical abilities (high, medium, and low). Data were collected through a problem-posing test, observation of GeoGebra use, and semi-structured interviews. The results indicate that the high-ability student (S1) was able to appropriately modify Systems of Linear Equations in Two Variables problems with strong mathematical reasoning, supported by GeoGebra visualizations. The medium-ability student (S2) was able to change parameters but had limited understanding of the implications of those changes on the solution. Meanwhile, the low-ability student (S3) struggled to modify problems and validate solutions, even producing inconsistent systems. These findings highlight the critical role of GeoGebra in facilitating conceptual understanding of Systems of Linear Equations in Two Variables while also identifying challenges faced by students with different levels of mathematical ability. The study offers pedagogical implications for the development of technology-integrated mathematics instruction aimed at enhancing students’ critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a discovery-based mathematics learning video on integer material that can improve mathematical problem-solving skills and creative thinking skills of grade VI elementary school students. This study uses the Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE development model consisting of five stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The subjects in this study were grade VI students at an elementary school in Punggul Gedangan. The instruments used included validation sheets from material experts, design experts, media experts, and mathematics teachers, student response questionnaires, and problem-solving and creative thinking ability tests. The validation results showed that the developed learning video was included in the very valid category. Limited trials showed that the video was effective in improving students' problem-solving and creative thinking abilities. Thus, the developed learning videos are suitable for use as alternative learning media in mathematics learning, especially integer material, and can support students' high-level thinking skills.
