Abstract

This study aims to develop a teaching module focused on mathematical problem posing and problem solving, specifically within the topic of statistics. The goal is to create a module that is not only valid, practical, and effective but also capable of honing the critical and creative thinking skills of high school students. This study utilizes the Research and Development (R&D) method following the 4D development model. The subjects of this research were 10th-grade high school students. The research findings indicate that the teaching module is considered highly valid, with a score of 4.13. In terms of practicality, it achieved a score of 3.8, suggesting the module is user-friendly, engaging, and supportive of a smooth learning process. The module proved effective in improving students' critical and creative thinking skills, as evidenced by a 42% increase in average test scores after using the module. This research suggests that the developed teaching module is feasible for use as instructional material at the high school level and is capable of strengthening students' critical and creative thinking abilities. This module serves as an alternative instructional resource that encourages active, innovative mathematics learning oriented toward the development of high-order thinking skills (HOTS).

Abstract

Problem-solving ability is an important skill that students need to develop in mathematics learning; however, this ability is still relatively low, especially in the topic of Systems of Linear Equations in Two Variables (SLETV). The development of Artificial Intelligence, particularly ChatGPT, provides opportunities to support students’ mathematical problem-solving processes. This study aimed to describe junior high school students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities in algebra by utilizing Artificial Intelligence based on high, moderate, and low mathematical ability levels. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study design. The research subjects consisted of three seventh-grade students at a junior high school in Surabaya selected based on the results of a mathematics ability test and an AI usage questionnaire. Data were collected through mathematical problem-solving tests completed with and without utilizing ChatGPT, as well as interviews. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing based on Schoenfeld’s problem-solving stages, namely reading and analysis, exploration, planning, implementation, and verification and checking. The findings showed that students with high mathematical ability utilized ChatGPT as a reference to obtain problem-solving strategies while still relying on their own understanding during the solving and verification processes. Students with moderate mathematical ability utilized ChatGPT as guidance in determining solution steps, whereas students with low mathematical ability utilized ChatGPT to obtain solution procedures used to solve the problems. The findings indicate that the role of ChatGPT differs across students’ mathematical ability levels.

Abstract

The development of Artificial Intelligence provides opportunities for students to obtain assistance in solving various learning problems, including statistical problems. However, the use of AI also raises questions about how students’ critical thinking skills are demonstrated when interacting with such technology. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the critical thinking skills of high-, moderate-, and low-mathematical-ability senior high school students in solving statistical problems using Artificial Intelligence. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study design. The research subjects consisted of three senior high school students representing high, moderate, and low mathematical abilities. Data were collected through a Mathematical Ability Test, a Critical Thinking Skills Test, an Artificial Intelligence usage questionnaire, and interviews. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that students with high mathematical ability used ChatGPT to obtain information that helped them understand the concepts required to solve statistical problems. Students with moderate mathematical ability used ChatGPT to support problem-solving and concepts understanding, although some concepts were not fully understood. Meanwhile, students with low mathematical ability used ChatGPT primarily to obtain formulas and information needed to solve the problems. Without using ChatGPT, students with high mathematical ability were still able to provide reasoning consistent with their analysis, whereas students with moderate and low mathematical ability showed limitations in providing justification and interpreting the results obtained. Thus, the use of ChatGPT provided different forms of support according to students’ mathematical abilities in solving statistical problems.

Abstract

Analogical reasoning is an essential skill in mathematics learning because it enables students to transfer knowledge from a source problem to a target problem with a similar underlying structure. With technological advancements, Artificial Intelligence (AI), such as ChatGPT, has emerged as a learning support tool in mathematics education. This study aimed to describe senior high school students’ analogical reasoning in solving open-ended mathematical problems with AI support based on their mathematical ability levels. This research employed a qualitative case study design. The participants were three senior high school students selected through purposive sampling, consisting of student with high mathematical ability, student with moderate mathematical ability, and student with low mathematical ability. The research instruments included a mathematical ability test, an analogical reasoning test in the form of open-ended problems on the topic of Systems of Linear Equations in Three Variables (SLETV), and a semi-structured interview guide. Data were analyzed using Ruppert’s stages of analogical reasoning: structuring, mapping, applying, and verifying. The findings revealed that students with high mathematical ability demonstrated structural analogical reasoning by completing all stages of analogical reasoning and focusing on the underlying mathematical structure shared by the source and target problems. Students with moderate mathematical ability exhibited partial analogical reasoning, completing all stages but relying primarily on similarities in solution procedures. Meanwhile, students with low mathematical ability demonstrated surface analogical reasoning, characterized by a focus on contextual and surface similarities between the problems. Overall, the quality of analogical reasoning improved as students’ mathematical ability increased. AI functioned as an interactive support tool that facilitated idea exploration, strategy development, and solution verification throughout the analogical reasoning process

Abstract

This study aims to describe the integration of preservice mathematics teachers’ declarative, procedural, and conditional knowledge in solving mathematical problems based on levels of problem-solving success. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The participants were three preservice mathematics teachers selected from 40 undergraduate students in a Mathematics Education Study Program at a public university in West Java, Indonesia, based on problem-solving test results, the quality of solution processes, and representation of high, moderate, and low success levels. Data were collected through mathematical problem-solving tests and semi-structured interviews, and analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the subject with high success had strong declarative knowledge coherently connected with procedural and conditional knowledge. The subject with moderate success demonstrated adequate conceptual understanding and initial strategy selection but was not consistent in controlling procedures and evaluating results. Meanwhile, the subject with low success showed fragmented conceptual understanding, inaccurate procedural application, and less-directed strategy selection. These findings confirm that mathematical problem-solving success is determined by the simultaneous integration of these three types of knowledge. Therefore, preservice teacher education needs to develop them in an integrated, systematic, and reflective manner.
