Abstract

This study aims to find the appropriate model for the modus operandi of a financial institution called Waqf-Ventura Capital Syariah (WVCS). WVCS is integration between social finance (waqf) and commercial finance (Ventura capital). This WVCS has been adopted in Indonesia but the right form of operation is still yet to be found. In addition, this study also looks for appropriate contracts able to be practiced within the WVCS itself. WVCS is conceptualized based on the content analysis of cash waqf operations, profit and loss sharing modes and venture capital strategies. It has been found that there are at least 3 alternative models of operation for this WVCS. Firstly, the waqf fund is pooled into the capital; secondly, the waqf fund is pooled into a third-party fund; and thirdly, the waqf fund is pooled into both the capital and third party-fund. These unique operandi of WVCS could be adopted, as long as there are mudharabah dan musharakah contracts for development of the Indonesian Economy.

Abstract

Carbon trading is pivotal in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. However, the contribution of waqf-based forests—forests established on endowed land—remains underexplored. This research addresses this gap by investigating the potential, schemes, stakeholders, opportunities, challenges, and strategies for waqf-based forests in carbon trading. Through a literature review, in-depth interviews, and field observations, the study found that waqf-based forests can contribute to carbon trading and raise Islamic awareness. The findings identify two potential schemes for selling carbon credits from waqf-based forests: the Ministry of Environment and Forestry’s carbon exchange and direct business-to-business (B2B) transactions. Due to the sustainability of waqf land and its added ecological, economic, social, and Islamic values, waqf-based forests can produce high-quality carbon credits and provide an inclusive and sustainable green economy. However, challenges such as suboptimal land area, lack of technical knowledge, and the absence of a carbon trading fatwa need to be addressed. Proposed strategies to overcome these challenges include document bundling, collaborations with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs, direct B2B sales, and selecting plants that enhance carbon economic value. This research offers in-depth insights into the potential of waqf-based forests as significant players in carbon trading, emphasizing their inherent sustainability values. Keywords: carbon trading, green economy, high-quality carbon credit, waqf-based forest

Abstract

Indonesia is experiencing a serious inactivity of cooperatives, initially the number of active cooperatives was 209,448 units (2014) but has decreased to 130,119 units (2023) or a decrease of 79,328 units. This research aims to defined the effect of cooperative outreach on the sustainability of sharia saving and loan cooperatives (SLC). SLCs endeavor to elevate support provision to members. Mutually beneficial will be reached if financial and non-financial services (NFS) provided in a balanced manner. Utilizing data via questionnaires from 11 provinces in Indonesia or 32.3% of the total provinces, linear regression, mediation and moderation analysis were carried out. The analysis technique uses Structural Equation Model Partial Least Square (SEM PLS). The findings show a negative relationship between outreach and sustainability. Meanwhile, capital deepening has a positive effect and has a mediating effect on sustainability. However, NFS were found to have no moderating effect on this relationship. This research concludes that SLCs have to take a look at the capitals strength to maintain outreach, and should be wise regarding non-financial services. As a recommendation, the delivery of NFS needs a carefully consideration because apart from adding costs it also does not support the sustainability of the institution.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to measure the trust of institutional waqif to distribute waqf to waqf institutions, in this case, the Indonesian Waqf Board (BWI), in the form of an index referring to the Waqf Core Principles (WCP). This study measures the trust of institutional waqif to distribute cash waqf through BWI based on WCP using an index (100 scale), which composed of individual index of waqf supervision, nazhir governance, risk management, sharia governance, and the overall trust index. The institutional waqif trust index to distribute waqf to BWI is “trust” (53.36). Based on components: a. waqf supervision index is trust (13.49), b. nazhir governance index is trust (3.18), risk management index is trust (25.24), and sharia governance index is trust (11.45). Increasing the trust of institutional waqf in BWI can be done through the improvement and management of waqf from large-scale institutional waqf, preparation of BWI communication strategies which include implementation of waqf and policies, and transfer of knowledge from waqf institutions to institutional waqif. This thesis will provide additional knowledge to academics regarding the potential of institutional waqif and the implementation of WCP in Indonesia. In addition, this research practically provides recommendations for regulators, waqf institutions, and related parties to optimize the collection, management, and supervision of waqf in Indonesia. Based on the author's knowledge, this is the first paper to measure the trustworthiness of institutional waqif. This paper is expected to provide novelty regarding the level of trust of a institutional waqif to a waqf institution in the form of an index.

To find out the value of the distribution of benefits in Nazhir institutions has increased after participating in competency training and certification; and 5. To find out the competency-based deals , this certification influences reporting through BWI e-reporting. Respondents in this study were participants in competency training and certification, both those who work as nazhir and non-nazhir. The data analysis method in this study is Partial Least Square (PLS). The study results show that nazhir competency certification has a positive and significant effect on nazhir performance and non-nazhir participation in the waqf movement. The element of the competency certification assessment that has a high score is the attitude element. The component of Nazhir's performance, which has a high value, is from increasing the collection of waqf, while from non-Nazhir's participation which has a high value, is participation in the form of disseminating information to relatives, friends, and the work environment. The results of this study imply that it is necessary to make changes in the assessment of nazhir competence so that elements of knowledge and skills can have the same value as attitude.
