Abstract

This study investigates how English for Specific Purposes ESP learners’ view on the importance of the four macro-skills: speaking, reading, writing and listening in professional and business settings among Indonesian university learners. Despite widespread recognition of English as a key medium in global workplaces, empirical evidence regarding students’ prioritisation of these skills remains limited, particularly in Indonesia. A quantitative survey was conducted among 47 university learners enrolled in ESP programs employing a structured questionnaire with a four-point Likert scale to capture perceptions across the four skill areas. The sample was selected using purposive sampling, and the questionnaire had been reviewed through expert validation to ensure content appropriateness. Descriptive statistical analyses showed that reading had the highest mean score (3.553), followed by speaking (3.547), writing (3.542), and listening (3.516), indicating consistently high perceived importance across all four macro skills. The findings underscore the need for ESP curricula to integrate all four skills and cohesively align instructional practices with workplace expectations. This study contributes to the literature by providing a holistic view of learners' views on English macro-skill importance and offers practical implications for curriculum designers and educators seeking to enhance learners’ readiness for global professional communication.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has created significant challenges and opportunities for Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in maintaining their educational identity while adapting to the demands of the digital era. This condition necessitates innovative learning transformations that integrate Islamic values with technological advancements through sociological approaches that consider social, cultural, and educational dynamics within pesantren communities. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the application of sociological approaches in transforming pesantren learning through digital platforms and to identify their implications for students’ academic and character development. This research employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to examine and synthesize relevant scholarly publications on digital learning transformation, sociological perspectives in education, and pesantren development. The collected literature was analyzed thematically to identify key patterns, challenges, and outcomes associated with the implementation of cyber-based integrative learning models. The findings reveal that integrating digital platforms into pesantren education significantly enhances students’ technological competencies, learning effectiveness, academic performance, and access to broader knowledge resources. Furthermore, students demonstrate greater openness toward contemporary scientific knowledge while maintaining strong adherence to Islamic teachings and values. The interaction among students, educators, and digital technology fosters collaborative learning environments, strengthens social awareness, improves adaptability to educational changes, and supports the development of critical thinking skills. The study implies that the transformation of pesantren education through a sociological and cyber-based integrative approach not only contributes to academic advancement but also reinforces students’ Islamic identity, character formation, and social responsibility. Abstract

Mathematics learning in senior high schools still tends to be oriented towards memorizing routine procedures and problems, thus under-developing critical thinking skills and students' socio-affective engagement. However, limited studies have integrated Caring Community values into Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in mathematics learning contexts. This study aims to describe the implementation of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) based on Caring Community in developing Student Worksheets in mathematics at Ibrahimy 2 High School Sukorejo, a boarding school. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach involving 1 mathematics teacher and 31 grade 10 students with data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana through the stages of collection, reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that the integration of PBL with Caring Community values was able to create more contextual, collaborative, and meaningful learning. Students became more active in problem investigations, group discussions, and showed increased courage in expressing ideas and presenting work results. In addition, a supportive and emotionally safe learning environment encouraged peer scaffolding and strengthened understanding of mathematical concepts. These findings indicate that Caring Community-based PBL has the potential to be an alternative mathematics learning method that not only develops cognitive aspects, but also social and affective aspects of students, especially in the context of Islamic boarding school education. This study contributes theoretically by extending the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) framework through the integration of Caring Community values, emphasizing that socio-affective dimensions play a crucial role in supporting mathematical understanding and collaborative knowledge construction.

Abstract

This article aims to provide knowledge about the importance of stimulating the fetus in the womb in accordance with the Qur'anic verse An-Nahl 78 regarding the creation of hearing that precedes the creation of the senses of sight and heart (reason and mind). In examining the verse, the researcher used the science of munasabah to analyze the relationship and harmony between An-Nahl 78 and other verses. The results are then correlated with medical facts and scientific journals in previous studies.  Using books, journals, articles, and written documents as the main materials, this study employs a qualitative method. The results show that maximizing hearing during storytelling activities while the child is in the womb can stimulate their brain development and language skills. In line with Surah An-Nahl verse 78, this activity is also a concrete action to support the government in improving literacy through the National Literacy Movement (GLN) at the smallest level, namely the family.

Abstract

The rapid development of technology has introduced various language learning resources, including podcasts, which offer authentic audio input but are often underutilized and lack structured application in EFL classrooms. Integrating gamification into podcasts represents a promising approach to enhance students’ engagement, motivation, and learning outcomes. This study aims to evaluate the impact of gamified podcasts on EFL students’ listening comprehension, learning motivation, and content retention. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving university-level EFL students divided into an experimental group (gamified podcasts with interactive quizzes, leaderboards, and badges) and a control group (non-gamified podcasts). Pre-tests and post-tests assessed listening comprehension, motivation, and retention, with statistical comparisons conducted using t-tests and ANOVA. The results indicate that students exposed to gamified podcasts demonstrated significant improvements in listening comprehension, motivation, and retention compared to their peers in the control group. The interactive and competitive elements of gamification encouraged repeated engagement, active participation, and deeper cognitive processing of audio materials, which strengthened long-term memory and overall learning outcomes. These findings suggest that gamified podcast-based learning not only enriches traditional listening practices but also fosters a more engaging, motivating, and effective EFL learning environment. Consequently, integrating gamification into podcast instruction is recommended as an innovative strategy to support language acquisition and enhance students’ sustained involvement in learning activities.
