Abstract

Anemia remains a nutritional problem in Indonesia, where more than 50% of the incidence is due to iron deficiency caused by low quality and quantity of food consumed and iron intake sources. Low iron intake did not affect iron adequacy. This study aimed to analyze the factors associated with iron adequacy among adolescent girls in Indonesia. This study used a cross-sectional design and secondary data from the National Survey of Food Consumption (NSFC) in Indonesia in 2014. The number of participants was 11.766 adolescent girls aged 10-18 years. Data were collected using the NSFC 2014 questionnaire and the food consumption collection method using a food recall 24 hour. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-squared test and Logistic Regression to identify the factors influencing iron adequacy. The results showed that the iron intake of adolescent girls in Indonesia was 10 mg/day, with an adequate iron level of 42,9%. Logistic regression showed that the most influential factors (p<0,05) were age, place of residence, economic status, and consumption of cereals, vegetables, nuts, fruits, and animal foods. In conclusion, the factors associated with the iron adequacy level of adolescent girls in Indonesia are age, region of residence, economic status, and consumption of cereals, vegetables, nuts, fruits, and animal foods.

Abstract

Preschool teachers play a crucial role in influencing children's eating patterns at school, which is of utmost importance considering the detrimental impact of malnutrition on preschool children's cognitive abilities. In order to improve preschool teachers' nutrition behavior, it is imperative to provide education on nutritional behavior. One effective approach is implementing nutrition education for teachers through e-Health, which offers numerous advantages such as easier access and wider reach. Therefore, this research aimed to analyze the effectiveness of the Pegia eHealth intervention in improving the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of preschool teachers regarding nutrition. The sample consisted of 24 teachers from eight preschool centers in Purwokerto City, Indonesia. The e-Health intervention was conducted for 12 weeks, and the differences before and after the intervention were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The results showed a significant increase in the median knowledge by 12.00 with an interquartile range (IR) of 14.00, the median attitudes by 10.50 (IR: 8.75), and the median nutrition practices by 7.00 (IR: 3.00) (p-value < 0.05). The Pegia eHealth intervention showed its effectiveness in improving the nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and practices of preschool teachers.

Abstract

Maternal body fluids imbalance affects amniotic fluid, serum sodium-potassium, edema, and preeclampsia. Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) is a growth hormone and a regulator in sodium balance regulation. This study aimed to determine the correlation of IGF-1, zinc, calcium, and sodium with hydration status and the nutrients impact to IGF-1 based on hydration status of pregnant women at Kebon Jeruk Health-Center, West Jakarta. This cohort-prospective study was conducted in December 2016 to January 2018. A total of 66 pregnant women in the second trimester were examined. Urine color, urine specific gravity, serum sodium, serum osmolality and urine were used as hydration status indicators. Zn, Ca, Na, and IGF-1 levels as the growth indicator from mother to fetus. Pearson correlation test, independent t-test and linear regression were used in statistical analysis. There were no differences in IGF-1, Zn, Ca, and Na serum between the two groups (p³0.05). There was no relationship between Ca, Na and IGF-1 level (p³0.05). The regression results show a possitive relation that low zinc serum affect IGF-1 level in dehydrated pregnant women. Therefore, it is necessary for pregnant women to consume zinc-rich foods to increase IGF-1 level and keep hydration status with water consume 3.0 L per-day.

High uric acid levels in the blood, if not addressed and left for a long time, can lead to various non-communicable diseases such as chronic kidney disease, joint damage, and cardiovascular disease. The prevalence of hyperuricemia in Indonesia in 2015 was 18%. Research related to menopausal status and nutritional status in women aged 15-54 years in Indonesia has not been widely studied by taking several provinces as samples. Objectives: To analyze the relationship between menopausal status and nutritional status with uric acid levels in women aged 15-54 years in Indonesia. Methods: The design of this study was cross-sectional, with female subjects aged 15-54 years in 10 provinces in Indonesia and a total number of 606 respondents. Sampling techniques for determining provinces and cities using purposive sampling and determining sub-districts or villages using random sampling. Uric acid levels were obtained from capillary blood measurements, and nutritional status was obtained from anthropometric measurements conducted by skilled health workers. Menopausal status was obtained from interviews by trained enumerators who asked about menstrual history in one year. The classification of menopausal status was divided into not yet menopausal, pre-menopausal, and menopausal. Results: A total of 42.9% of the total respondents were obese, mostly in the age group of 41-54 years. Subjects who suffered from hyperuricemia were 21.1%, and those who had entered menopause in this study were 11.4%. There is a significant relationship between menopausal status and uric acid levels (p=0.031), and there is a significant relationship between nutritional status and uric acid levels (p<0.001; r=0.193).Conclusion: Uric acid levels in obese and menopausal women tend to increase when compared to women with normal nutritional status and not yet menopausal.KEYWORDS: hyperuricemia; menopausal status; nutritional status; uric acid levels; womenReceived: August 26, 2024; Revised: June 10 2024; Accepted: Nov 20, 2024; Available online: Nov 30, 2024; Published: Nov 30, 2024.

Abstract

The percentage of food waste generation has increased in Indonesia for 20 years, with 80% of food waste coming from households. This can cause various significant negative impacts on the environment, economy and social. Various factors affect the production of household food waste. This study aims to analyze household food waste based on its quantity, type, and determinants. This study uses some secondary data from primary research conducted by Swamilaksita (2024) with a cross-sectional design. The study sample of 110 households was selected using a stratified random sampling technique. Food waste data was obtained through direct measurement using the SNI 19-3964-1994 method. The entire data was analyzed descriptively, while multiple linear regression analysis was carried out to determine the determinants of household food waste. This study showed that the average amount of food waste was 318.4 g/HH/day and 76.7 g/cap/day. The cereal group was the most discarded food group, followed by vegetables and fruits group. Only three variables were proven to be statistically significant (p-value<0.1) affect the average amount of household food waste, namely the number of household members (p=0.000), mother work as civil servant/private employee (p=0.049), and purchasing and spending behavior (p=0.084). The conclusion was there is an average amount of food waste in units per household and per capita, with the dominant food group is the cereal group, as well as the determinants of household food waste, including number of household members, mother work as a civil servant/private employee, and purchasing and spending behavior.
