Abstract

Abstract

Objective: This study explores the intersection of Islamic education, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Javanese cultural syncretism through Kidung Rumekso by Sunan Kalijaga. It aims to examine syncretism as a cultural–pedagogical strategy in the Islamization of Java, focusing on how Islamic teachings are integrated with Javanese traditions and their implications for culture-based Islamic education aligned with SDGs, particularly inclusive and quality education. Theoretical framework: The study employs the concept of syncretism supported by hermeneutic and phenomenological approaches to analyze the integration of Javanese cosmology and Islamic monotheism within the text. Literature review: Existing scholarship indicates that Islamization in Java occurred adaptively through cultural accommodation; however, specific studies positioning Kidung Rumekso as an epistemological reconstruction remain limited. Methods: This research uses a qualitative philosophical method with a hermeneutical-phenomenological approach, examining textual content, relevant literature, and historical-cultural contexts. Results: The findings reveal that Kidung Rumekso represents a profound model of Javanese-Islamic syncretism operating across three dimensions: (1) theological, reflected in the alignment of Manunggaling Kawula Gusti with the principle of tawhid; (2) ritual, seen in the transformation of traditional chants or mantras into Islamic prayers; and (3) symbolic, demonstrated through the use of Javanese cultural symbols to communicate Islamic teachings contextually. These dimensions illustrate how religious values are transmitted in culturally resonant forms, supporting socially sustainable education. Implications: This model contributes to the development of contextual Islamic education that is adaptive, inclusive, and rooted in local wisdom, aligning with SDGs’ emphasis on cultural sustainability and equitable learning. Novelty: The study offers a new perspective by interpreting Kidung Rumekso as an epistemological reconstruction bridging Javanese mysticism and Islamic orthodoxy, rather than merely a form of cultural accommodation.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the widespread narratives about the Well of Barhut circulating in society without adequate hadith verification. The purpose of this research is to analyze the quality of hadiths related to the Well of Barhut and to understand their meanings from the perspectives of Islamic preaching and historical civilization. This research employs a qualitative approach using library research. Data were collected through documentation from hadith books, da’wah literature, and Islamic historical sources, then analyzed using hadith takhrij and content analysis methods. The findings indicate that the hadiths concerning the Well of Barhut are generally classified as weak (da‘if) due to deficiencies in their chains of transmission, thus they cannot be used as a basis for legal rulings. However, substantively, these hadiths contain moral messages that can be utilized in da’wah as symbolic warnings and reinforcement of Islamic values. From a historical perspective, the narrative of the Well of Barhut has evolved as part of the religious-cultural construction of Muslim society. The implication of this study highlights the importance of caution in using hadith for da’wah and the need for an integrative approach combining hadith studies, da’wah, and historical analysis.

Abstract

This study develops an adab education curriculum for students based on the classical text Kitab Al-Lubāb min Kitāb al-Adab. Using a qualitative library research method, the study analyzes the text’s teachings to identify core adab values and educational guidelines. The findings indicate that the book systematically covers ethical conduct across various aspects of life, including ritual practices, social interactions, and personal habits, providing a rich source for curriculum design. The analysis identifies eight key educational objectives, such as respect, spiritual awareness, social harmony, discipline, and moral character formation. Furthermore, the study outlines teaching methods suggested by the text, such as question-and-answer, discussion, storytelling, and role modeling, and proposes comprehensive evaluation strategies, including peer review, self-reflection, and behavioral assessment, to ensure students internalize these values. Overall, the proposed curriculum integrates adab values into learning goals, instructional content, pedagogy, and assessments to produce well-rounded, morally upright learners. The results imply that incorporating this classical adab framework can strengthen Islamic character education and help address the contemporary issue of moral decline in schools. This Al-Lubāb–based curriculum aligns with national educational goals, presenting a holistic approach that integrates cognitive, affective, and spiritual development in student learning.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation of character building at MTsN 6 Sragen, as well as the supporting and inhibiting factors in the process. The background of this research stems from the importance of character education in shaping students with integrity, honesty, discipline, and responsibility. In an era of globalization filled with moral challenges, character education becomes a vital aspect that must be implemented in schools. This research employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving teachers, students, and school staff at MTsN 6 Sragen. The research findings indicate that the implementation of character building at MTsN 6 Sragen has been effective, although some challenges remain, such as limited teaching time and minimal parental involvement. Other findings show that students participating in this program tend to exhibit better discipline and responsibility. The main supporting factors include the commitment of teachers in running the program and a conducive school environment. However, social media influence and lack of family engagement present the primary challenges. The study implies that the success of character education in schools requires strong collaboration between schools, families, and communities.

Abstract

Religious moderation has become a strategic issue in contemporary Islamic education in Indonesia, particularly amid the rise of intolerance, extremism, and the weakening connection between religious learning and local culture. In this context, wayang dakwah serves as a cultural medium that bridges Islamic values, local wisdom, and socio-religious education. This study aims to analyze the role of wayang dakwah in internalizing religious moderation and to reconstruct an integrative paradigm of contemporary Islamic education based on cultural approaches. The study focuses on the construction of cultural da’wah, the internalization of moderation values, the role of dalang, and the educational implications of wayang dakwah in Boyolali Regency. This study employed a qualitative case study design. The research was conducted in Boyolali Regency from July to December 2025. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving 10 dalang as informants, with Ki Sri Setyo as the key informant. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that wayang dakwah functions not merely as traditional performance art but also as a medium of cultural da’wah that effectively internalizes the values of tolerance, anti-violence, justice, deliberation, and respect for local traditions. Dalang play strategic roles as value educators, cultural mediators, public communicators, and agents of religious moderation. Wayang dakwah is relevant for strengthening religious moderation and reconstructing contemporary integrative Islamic education in a more contextual, humanistic, and transformative way.

Abstract

The Abbasid Dynasty period is recognized as the golden age of Islamic civilization, during which knowledge flourished rapidly. This research aims to historically examine the role of the Abbasid Dynasty in building scientific infrastructure through the establishment and development of classical Islamic educational institutions. This study employs a qualitative methodology with a historical approach and document analysis. Data were obtained through a literature review of primary and secondary sources relevant to intellectual dynamics and educational institutions during the Abbasid period. The findings indicate that the Abbasid Dynasty, through the support of caliphs such as Harun al-Rashid and Al-Ma'mun, not only established institutions like Bayt al-Hikma (House of Wisdom) and madrasas, but also created supporting systems including patronage, budgeting, and expanded access to knowledge. It was also discovered that this period became a milestone for integration between religious and rational sciences, giving birth to an open and tolerant academic culture. The implications of this research demonstrate that many contemporary Islamic educational structures, such as university systems and integrated curricula, are rooted in the Abbasid educational model. This research provides an important contribution to the development of Islamic Religious Education studies, particularly in building holistic and historical educational models.
