Abstract

This study aims to reveal the meaning and lexem domain of the cliffs in the naming of tanjak Melayu, especially on Tanjak Tebing Tinggi, Tebing Runtuh, and Tebing Laksamana, in the cultural context of the Malay community through an inquisitive semantic approach. This study uses qualitative descriptive method. Data in the form of phrases, sentences, and images related to the names of tanjak Melayu were collected through observation, interview, and documentation techniques, with data sources coming from the book headband Alam Melayu (origins, history and usage) by Johan Iskandar and interviews with speakers from The Serai Serumpun community. Data analysis is carried out through three stages, namely scripting semantics, cognitive semantics, and inquisitive semantics. The results showed that the lexemes of the cliff is interpreted as a symbol of defense that represents firmness, protection, and endurance in Malay culture. Specifically, Tanjak Tebing Tinggi is interpreted as a symbol of Defense and is in the domain of power, tanjak Tebing Runtuh is interpreted as a symbol of success in defending the territory, and tanjak Tebing Laksamana is interpreted as a symbol of successful leaders in defending the territory, both of which are in the service domain. The naming of tanjak berleksem tebing is eventful because it is based on the historical and symbolic experience of the Malay community in the context of defense and leadership.

Abstract

The word eating can produce positive meaning as it is closely tied to human needs. This term is also intricately linked to eating habits. In Javanese society, this term serves to satisfy basic human needs and plays a pivotal role in defining social etiquette. Eating expressions have a broader meaning when examined from a dysphemistic perspective within cognitive semantics. This study employed a descriptive qualitative methodology, with data collection covering interviews, active listening, observation, and note-taking. The data were then analyzed using image schemas and conceptual meaning. The study found that the eating expressions underwent dysphemism in Javanese such as lambene ngemrus wae ket mau! (your mouth keeps eating!), wes, ngrokoti koyo tikus! (you eat like a rat!), Gimin esuk-esuk wis nguntal (Gimin ate too early this morning), wah, yahene wis nyekek ping pindho (you have eaten twice by this time), nyo, badhogen kabeh, aku rasah dingengehi (eat all the food and dont bother to spare for me), panganan kok di gaglak (how come you gulping the food?), and menungso kok gragas?! (how on earth could you only eat?!). Moreover, the study identified conceptual metaphors, comprising six structural metaphors and two orientational metaphors. Structural metaphors arise from systematic relationships observed in daily experiences, whereas orientational metaphors impart spatial direction, including the recognition of top-down image schemes, part-whole image schemes, existence image schemes, and merging image schemes.

The data in this study consists of 20 utterances containing dysphemism. The research instrument used was the researcher themselves, employing a read-and-record technique for data collection. Data analysis utilized a qualitative descriptive method with a semantic approach to identify the forms and functions of dysphemism. The results of the study indicate that there are 15 forms of dysphemism, namely figurative expressions, metaphors, re-modeling, circumlocution, clipping, ellipsis, abbreviations, acronyms, one word replacing another, general to specific, part for the whole, hyperbole, meaning beyond the statement, jargon, and colloquialisms. In terms of function, dysphemisms are used to convey things considered taboo or indecent, describe situations negatively, express criticism, belittle and mock, as well as exaggerate situations and hurl insults. The most dominant function is as a means of belittling and mocking.

Abstract

This study employs an inquisitive semantics approach, which remains relatively underutilized in linguistic studies in Indonesia. To date, research on Malay proverbs has tended to focus on the classification of meaning, function, and moral values, and has largely been limited to lexical and cognitive semantic analyses. Studies that specifically examine the rationale behind the selection of particular lexical items in proverbs—especially the word negeri - through an inquisitive semantics approach are still very limited. Therefore, this study aims to explore more deeply the meanings as well as the conceptual, cognitive, and cultural background underlying the use of the word negeri in Malay proverbs. Operationally, the data consist of Malay proverbs containing the lexicon negeri, obtained from the Pusat Rujukan Persuratan Melayu and other relevant sources. The analysis is conducted using an inquisitive semantics approach through three stages: script semantics (lexical meaning based on the Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia), cognitive semantics, and inquisitive semantics. In addition, the analysis considers metaphorical mapping between the source domain and the target domain to reveal the relationship between linguistic forms and their conceptual meanings. Data were collected using a note-taking technique and analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the word negeri in Malay proverbs functions not only as a geographical marker but also as a metaphor representing social concepts, collective identity, power, and the individual’s attachment to their community. The use of the word negeri reflects the Malay worldview regarding social order and the cultural values that underpin communal life.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the types and functions of implicature in the film Home Sweet Loan directed by Sabrina Rochelle. This film was selected as the object of the study because the dialogues among the characters contain many implied meanings that reflect social realities, economic pressures, and psychological conflicts experienced by young people. Implicatures in this film emerge through indirect communication related to the social, emotional, and relational contexts among characters, making it interesting to analyze using pragmatic studies. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach. The data consist of utterances or dialogues among the characters in the film Home Sweet Loan that contain implicatures. The data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques by watching the film repeatedly and then transcribing relevant conversations. Furthermore, the data were analyzed by classifying the types and functions of implicature based on Grice’s implicature theory. The results of the study indicate that there are two types of implicature in the film Home Sweet Loan, namely conventional implicature and non-conventional implicature. Conventional implicatures are found in utterances whose implied meanings can be generally understood, while non-conventional implicatures appear in utterances that require an understanding of the social and emotional contexts of the characters. In addition, the functions of implicature identified include assertive, directive, expressive, commissive, and declarative functions. Thus, the use of implicature in the film Home Sweet Loan enriches communication, portrays the social realities of young people, and effectively conveys social messages. This study is expected to contribute to pragmatic studies, particularly implicature analysis in film media, and serve as a reference for students, researchers, and film practitioners in understanding the use of implicature as a communication strategy in film dialogue.

Abstract

Malay proverbs constitute an important part of oral cultural heritage that not only preserves the collective experiences of society but also functions as a medium for transmitting life values across generations. One proverb that remains widely used in daily communication is the apple does not fall far from the tree (buah jatuh tidak jauh dari pohonnya). This expression is commonly employed to describe similarities between children and their parents in terms of behavior, habits, and character. Beyond its simple usage, however, the proverb reflects the Malay cultural perspective that positions the family as the primary environment for shaping individual identity and character. This study examines the meaning of the proverb buah jatuh tidak jauh dari pohonnya through an inquisitive semantics approach by exploring its lexical, grammatical, contextual, cultural, and inquisitive meanings. The study applies a qualitative descriptive method using literature review and textual analysis. The research data consist of the linguistic unit of the selected Malay proverb, which is analyzed in relation to its cultural context and family education values. The findings reveal that the proverb does not merely express intergenerational resemblance but also contains essential family educational values, including role modeling, parental responsibility, value transmission, self-awareness, and hope for future generations. These findings indicate that Malay proverbs remain relevant as a form of local wisdom that can contribute to strengthening character education within the family context.

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between mastery goals, including task-based and self-based competence, and positive emotions, engagement, relationship, meaning, and accomplishment (PERMA), which may affect life satisfaction. Mastery goals, PERMA, and life satisfaction were examined using a relationship study model. The current study involved 260 English education programs, with 81 (31.2%) male students and 179 (68.8%) female students. AMOS 18 was used to conduct a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The results of the current study demonstrate that task-based competence influences life satisfaction. In contrast, self-based competence was found not to affect life satisfaction. Analysis of SEM revealed significant influences of task-based competence on PERMA and no significant relationships between self-based competence and PERMA. PERMA partially mediates the influence of task-related competence on life satisfaction. The indirect effects of self-based competence on life satisfaction were observed through PERMA as a complete mediator. The novelty of the current research lies in its focus on mastery goals, the target population of college students, and the mediating role of PERMA. These contributions are critical, as teachers or instructors are responsible for developing student well-being and life satisfaction. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2023-SIED2-018 Full Text: PDF
