Abstract

During Indonesia’s 2019 presidential election, significant religious and ethnic contestations occurred using hatred and stigma in expressing support for favored candidates. This article focuses on the case of West Kalimantan Province which has a divided society and memories of ethnic-based bloody communal violence in the early 2000s.  This article notifies that wherein ethnic Dayak, Javanese, and Chinese voters tended to support Joko Widodo (Jokowi)-Ma’ruf Amin, while ethnic Malay, Madurese, and Buginese voters tended to back Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno up in the election. However, such ethnic and religious contestations in West Kalimantan did not generate violent conflicts during the election. Instead, voters continued to interact peacefully and harmoniously among different ethnic and religious groups. This contestation coincided with the emergence of political awareness among the Dayaks, Chinese, and Malays of West Kalimantan, which further contributed to Jokowi’s electoral victory.  Nevertheless, this political contestation produced the political identity.

Abstract

Online dating apps have become a means for some female college students in Yogyakarta to find sexual partners. Apps such as Tinder, Bumble, and Tantan indicate people nearby and have anonymity features that make it easier for users to connect with people, allowing for a freer exploration of sexual identity, thus contributing to the formation of promiscuous sexual behavior among female college students. This study aims to analyze the role of dating apps in shaping promiscuous sexual behavior among female college students in Yogyakarta from a sociocultural perspective. Using a qualitative approach and ethnographic method, this study found that dating apps are used as a means of finding partners to fulfill sexual desires without serious commitment. Factors such as ease of access, anonymity, the flexible social environment, and the influence of popular culture play an important role in reducing the social supervision that previously restricted sexual behavior. The findings suggest that dating apps not only facilitate physical encounters but also create new spaces for female college students to adopt more permissive sexual values. The features of anonymity and ease of access create an open space for the free exploration of sexual identity and the adoption of new values related to sexuality, influenced by popular culture and a flexible social environment.

Abstract

Islamic spirituality and the philanthropic spirit of society cannot be viewed as generic and instantaneous. The purpose of this article is to explore the factors that shape the intrinsic motivation of the millennial generation in carrying out philanthropic activities. This article is written using qualitative methods using data obtained from related literature. The data used as analysis material is in the form of secondary data obtained from previous studies, journals, and reports from related institutions such as Charities Aid Foundation and Badan Amil Zakat Nasional RI. The data obtained are analyzed by content analysis methods, at this stage the content under study is interpreted with a focal point on the meaning in accordance with the purpose of the study. The findings of this study show that the high motivation of Muslim millennial philanthropy is driven by the motivation that arises in each of them. Philanthropic activities among Muslim millennials, in addition to being a form of piety, are also a criticism of philanthropic activities so far. The limitation of this study lies in the type of data used, namely secondary data so that it has not been able to describe the state of the millennial generation. Therefore, further analysis using primary data is needed to obtain more accurate results.

Abstract

This study examines how public perceptions of Anies Baswedan are shaped through YouTube, Twitter, and Google, employing text, network, and sentiment analysis with InfraNodus. Data was collected through each platform's official API with a focus on the keyword "Anies Baswedan." The findings reveal that informative narratives dominate YouTube, while Twitter serves as a space for emotional expression, characterized by a high level of positive sentiment. At the same time, Google reflects information-seeking behavior with a more balanced sentiment distribution. These findings reveal that each platform plays a unique role in shaping political perceptions: YouTube archives and disseminates documentation, and Twitter serves as a forum for debate and support. At the same time, Google functions as an aggregator of opinions from various sources. This study offers new insights into how cross-platform interactions are influenced not only by the content of messages but also by communication patterns and the digital ecosystem in which conversations occur, thereby strengthening our understanding of how political narratives evolve in the digital age.

Abstract

Religion in the Malay community is not only seen as something related to belief but also concerns issues of identity and symbols in other community groups. This study intends to look at the social construction of Islamic local tradition in the Malay community. This study argues that it turns out that the social construction of religion builds a cultural concept in Islamic religious values as an identity through the customs of the Malay community. In response to that argument, the question arises: How is the form of social construction of religion in the Malay community? And how does the social construction of religion affect the social life of religion in the Malay community? This research uses a media approach and literature review that explains the social construction of Islamic traditions in Malay society. The results of this study indicate that the social construction of religion in the Malay community has several important conditions. (1) religion-based tradition orientation, (2) close solidarity in religious social construction, (3) the existence of religion-based legal norms in the Malay community, and (4) a proud identity that is superior to the Malay community. These findings conclude that religious social construction in Malay society shows that religious and tribal identities develop as a religious social construction.

Abstract

This article is aimed at explaining how the political behavior of Towani Tolotang, a minority religious group in Indonesia, unfolds by using fiqh al-‘aqaliyyāt (Islamic jurisprudence of the minority) perspective. Accordingly, the current article discusses three aspects. First, the Towani Tolotang’s political activities. This correlates with the group’s position, which in terms of quantity is far fewer than the Muslim majority. Second, the national constitution’s provision ensures the rights of each citizen to participate in various aspects of life, including political freedom regardless of their position and status. Third, the Muslim majority group’s acceptance of the Towani Tolotang’s political activities. The data analyzed in the research were collected by observing the daily life of the Towani Tolotang, interviewing some informants, and studying document as well as literature studies on relevant documents and literary sources. According to the data analyses, it was found that there are apparent changes in the political behavior of this particular minority group, which not only include the distribution of support given to various political parties but also the active engagement of the group’s elites and followers in the general election wherein some of them have even become a member of the local level legislative body. The present article asserts that the Towani Tolotang is one of the minority groups in Indonesia that has acquired space to actively participate in politics, although occurring at the local level. This is not only due to the Muslim majority’s acceptance, but the Towani Tolotang group’s fraternization with Muslims as well.

Abstract

This research aims to understand how identity redefinition occurs and whatcultural variables result in identity redefinition. The Indonesian governmenthas disbanded several mass organizations throughout the years. To ensure itssurvival, the group hid among the crowds. Meanwhile, the Islamic DefendersFront (FPI), which the government had disbanded in 2020, was renamed theIslamic United Front, and it maintained a milder stance toward the governmentto survive. Several research studies have examined the government’s rationalefor abolishment. However, research on how organizational actors react to theirorganizations’ dissolution is still scarce. The research examined the former IslamicDefenders Front (FPI) members’ perceptions of their organization’s dissolutionby the government in 2020. The study utilized a qualitative research design. Thedata analysis was performed inductively to ascertain the former FPI members’subjective opinions of the organizational redefinition. The findings indicatedthat former FPI members reinvented their identity after the government’sdisbandment as a means of survival by adopting more lenient, accommodating, and inclusive views toward the government and other mass groups. Also, thedisintegration of radical religious groups may catalyze a new relationship betweenradical Islamic organizations and the state.

Abstract

The urgency of this research lies in the need to understand the trends, contributions, and dynamics of women's political participation globally. This article aims to map studies that focus on women's political participation. Research methods include bibliometric analysis with data sources from the Scopus database. The study's findings reflect significant growth in women's political participation research, especially in recent years, with distribution varying by country and research theme. The research findings also show that although there are themes that have received attention, there are still areas that need to be explored further, such as intersectionality, gender equality, gender, and the impact of social media that provide insight into the complexity of women's political participation issues. This study recommends the need for increased research and local understanding of the factors influencing women's political participation in Indonesia to strengthen women's role in politics by learning from other countries that have successfully implemented inclusive policies. In addition, by involving various parties, including the government, research institutions, and civil society, Indonesia can create an environment that supports, empowers, and encourages women's political participation optimally. The implications of these findings not only help shape academic discourse, but also lay the foundation for concrete efforts to achieve gender equality and women's empowerment in the wider political sphere.
