Abstract

Islamic moderation has become a strategic agenda in Indonesia, yet the threats that can slow its implementation are often left implicit. Two leading Islamic organisations, Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), place moderation at the core of their missionary vision to foster a tolerant, open, and civilised society. This paper examines the challenges of realising Islamic moderation in Indonesia, focusing on initiatives associated with Muhammadiyah and NU. Using a qualitative design, the study combines in-depth interviews with organisational figures from both Muhammadiyah and NU with document-based analysis of organisational narratives and relevant written sources. The interview and documentary materials are analysed interpretively to identify recurring patterns in how moderation is articulated and contested. The findings indicate that a major obstacle is the growing prominence of conservative groups, which increasingly gain wide space. This conservative turn is accompanied by weakening respect for other groups and a tendency to resist Islamic groups outside one’s own circle. By making explicit how the rise of conservative groups constrains moderation work within mainstream Islamic organisations and shapes social recognition dynamics, this study contributes an evidence-based explanation of why moderation efforts can stall even when moderation is embedded in organisational missions.

Abstract

As one of the most prominent Islamic organisations in Indonesia, Muhammadiyah has, since its establishment, contributed substantially to resolving various issues confronted by the Indonesian government and society. The emergence of the COVID-19 Pandemic is also a concern to Muhammadiyah. It may contribute to assisting the government's efforts and relieving some of the burden bore by the people. The current article aims to provide an analysis of Muhammadiyah's movement in Indonesia and its handling of the COVID-19 Pandemic by using a faith-based commitment approach in the da'wah Muhammadiyah on Education, health, and caring poverty in the jargon da'wah Amar ma'ruf nahi munkar/effort and supporting virtues and stopping the damaging. Through this approach, it is found that Muhammadiyah has contributed significantly in various fields, particularly health, necessities, education, and preventive measures, regardless of one's background of religion, ethnicity, and political affiliation. All the assistance that Muhammadiyah had given was based on a faith-based commitment that Muhammadiyah is a socio-religious organisation that has decided to take the path of socio-humanitarian da'wah as stipulated by Muhammadiyah's founding mandate. The data from Muhammadiyah COVID-19 Command Centre, Indonesian Governance and the Media from March 13, 2020, to January 2021 analysis with in Faith Base Organisation Perspective.

Abstract

Papua faces complex socio-religious dynamics with the potential for conflict among religious communities. This article explores the strategic role of Muslims in building social harmony. The data used as the basis for analyzing this article was obtained through observation, interviews, and literature studies. The results show that the Muslim community plays an active role as a “creative minority” by integrating moderate Islamic values and the socio-cultural context in Papua. Involvement in the Forum Kerukunan Umat Beragama (FKUB), social programs, and collaboration with religious leaders, local communities, and the government are key in strengthening tolerance and openness. This study contributes to the integration of the concepts of social capital and Islamic moderation in social-religious studies that emphasize the importance of the involvement of religious communities in realizing harmonious social life in a multicultural society. From this it can be seen that to realize and maintain harmony in Papua requires a multidimensional approach involving continuous dialogue, policy support, and the use of local wisdom. Therefore, further research is recommended to explore the perspectives of other religious communities in presenting inclusive dialogue to realize and maintain a harmonious social life among religious communities.

Abstract

This article examines the ontological foundations of philosophical posthumanism and critically examines its central claims through the lens of contemporary Muslim thought. Rooted in postmodern critiques of Enlightenment humanism, posthumanism challenges conventional ideas of human identity, agency, and moral status by emphasizing hybridity, technological mediation, and the interconnectedness of all forms of life—including animals, machines, and ecosystems. Through conceptual analysis and comparative hermeneutics, the study contrasts these claims with key Islamic metaphysical concepts such as fitrah (innate nature), ruh (soul), and khalifah (vicegerency). Prominent Muslim thinkers, including Seyyed Hossein Nasr, Taha Abdurrahman, Osman Bakar, and Fazlur Rahman, argue that posthumanist ontology undermines the sacred status of the human being, potentially leading to spiritual alienation by denying transcendence and moral responsibility. While acknowledging the ethical and ecological contributions of posthumanism, the paper contends that its core assumptions remain incompatible with the Islamic worldview, which affirms human dignity, metaphysical purpose, and divinely ordained responsibility within the cosmos.

Abstract

The reform era witnessed a shift in the Tarjih Muhammadiyah Council’s legal outputs from monodisciplinary to multidisciplinary, resulting in a product known as responsive fiqh. Ecological political issues in Indonesia became a primary focus of this new approach. This research aims to analyze the Tarjih Muhammadiyah Council’s conceptual shift from monodisciplinary to multidisciplinary fiqh, and to explore how its critical fiqh responds to the ecological legal-political constellation in Indonesia during the reform era. This research employed normative legal research methods, utilizing a political approach to law. Data were gathered through literature review. The findings reveal that Muhammadiyah’s fiqh represents a new paradigm of responsive fiqh, aligned with the principles of tajdid and ijtihad. The shift in the Tarjih Council’s legal outputs is largely attributed to the leadership of its chairman. From the Tarjih Council’s diverse fiqh outputs, this research selected and highlighted Muhammadiyah’s fiqh products pertaining to ecology. First, the Fiqh of Water addresses the alarming, global water crisis, serving as the legal basis for Muhammadiyah’s judicial review of Law No. 7/2004 concerning Water Resources, which the Constitutional Court upheld, signifying the incorporation of this fiqh into Indonesia’s ecological political landscape. Second, the Fiqh of Disaster Management, addressing socio-community issues linked with ecological problems in disaster contexts, has not resulted in contestation or accommodation within ecological politics. Third, Agrarian Fiqh addresses varied agrarian challenges in Indonesia, including food self-sufficiency, environmental degradation, agrarian conflicts, indigenous community rights, and housing and public space access, thereby engaging in contestation with state policies within the realm of ecological politics. In this way, Muhammadiyah’s fiqh seeks to actively contribute to establishing a democratic political configuration by ensuring comprehensive and egalitarian influence on government policies.

Abstract

This study examines how and why Salafi groups, recognized for their puritanical and conservative ideologies, come to accept the concept of religious moderation. The objective of this research is to identify the factors that motivate Salafi groups to embrace religious moderation and to explore its impact on their religious identity and models of citizenship. Employing a qualitative-interpretative approach, this study utilizes data gathered from secondary sources, including books, articles, research reports, and social media The contribution of this study lies in providing a deeper understanding of how conservative religious groups can evolve and embrace more moderate discourse. This is particularly important in the current national context, as it fosters harmony and promotes religious tolerance. The findings indicate that Salafi groups accept religious moderation for various reasons, including social and political pressures, a desire for broader societal acceptance, and an evolving interpretation of their faith. However, this process is often challenging and frequently involves internal conflicts and struggles with identity. Salafi groups affirm their position as citizens by accommodating state policies, including the national religious moderation program. Their adaptation to the secular state system is crucial for their survival and influence within society.

Abstract

The involvement of the Muslim community and the use of religious narratives in the conservation of the environment are crucial. This aligns with the normative teachings of Islam found in the Qur'an and Hadith, which emphasize the importance of preserving the environment. One significant environmental issue currently affecting Indonesia is the widespread occurrence of forest and land fires, which has global implications. This situation has prompted the Muslim community to take action. Their response is characterized by an environmental movement that includes initiatives such as this research is qualitative in nature and is based on a literature review of normative documents from three Muslim organizations that are the focus of this study: the Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI), Muhammadiyah, and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). MUI has specifically addressed this issue by issuing the Green Fatwa, as outlined in Fatwa MUI No. 3 of 2016, which declares the burning of forests and land to be Haram (forbidden). Similarly, both Muhammadiyah and NU have responded by promoting environmental stewardship, urging the community to protect forests and land from fire. They have also engaged in direct action by providing assistance to combat the crisis of forest and land fires. Reason: Improved clarity, readability, and technical accuracy while maintaining the original meaning

Abstract

This research aims to describe the cultural barriers of the National Awakening Party (Partai Kebangkitan Bangsa or PKB) in promoting its members as candidates in direct presidential and vice-presidential elections. In the four general elections from 2004 to 2019, PKB failed to place its members as candidates. This condition is presumed to be due to cultural barriers embedded within the party’s internal dynamics and the cadre system. The research method employed in this study combined qualitative descriptive approaches by integrating literature studies with Focus Group Discussions (FGD) involving seven (7) competent informants comprising three media editors, two academics, one activist, and one politician. The data obtained from the FGD is the primary guide to trace document data. The data presentation involves triangulation of FGD data, document data, and field observation results. The data findings revealed three main pieces of evidence for cultural barriers: first, egocentrism of leaders and personal dependence, which refers to the positions of Kyai and Islamic Boarding Schools (pesantren) in the PKB cadre system; second, obedience that erases critical thinking, and third, the presence of the “green blood” identity, which holds privileges in the PKB’s cadre ship system. These three cultural barriers are not unique to PKB but are shared by most Islamic political parties in Indonesia.

Abstract

Central Kalimantan is a province that often has large-scale forest and land fires. The problem is then associated with the local wisdom of the Dayak tribe as the indigenous tribe of Central Kalimantan who still carry out the manugal tradition where one of the stages is to burn land before farming. The practice of the manugal tradition includes burning land before farming with the aim of fertilizing the soil. In the realm of positive law, many environmental laws and regulations, which are then called green constitutions, regulate the anticipation of forest and land fires. In addition, Islamic law also talks a lot about the concept of environmental management, in the context of Indonesia, the Muslim community responds to various environmental issues with various responses such as issuing environmental fatwas which are then known as green fatwas. Therefore, the question arises how the green constitution and green fatwa review the manugal custom as a local wisdom or customary law. The frequent contradiction between customary law, Islamic law and positive law encourages the author to conduct research in this perspective. This research method is normative juridical using statutory and conceptual approaches. The results of this study indicate that in the perspective of green constiution from the level of the Constitution to the legislation has accommodated the custom as long as it does not cause widespread forest and land fires. In the green fatwa perspective, only MUI specifically issued a fatwa on forest and land burning through fatwa number 30 of 2016 which legally prohibits, but there are exceptions for controlled forest and land burning and aims for benefits. So that the manugal custom remains in the corridor of harmonization with the green constitution and green fatwa
