Abstract

The disharmony of parents and children in online learning during the pandemic was a crucial phenomenon. This disharmony had caused difficulties for children to improve their learning motivation. In line with that, this study not only mapped out the forms of disharmony between parents and children in online learning but also analyzed the causes behind disharmony and its implications for children’s learning motivation. The data of this study was collected based on interviews with three different groups of informants by taking into account the structural characteristics of the groups. The results of this study showed that the emotional pressure, inability, and unpreparedness of parents and children in dealing with changes in learning traditions during the pandemic had strengthened the disharmony between them. The disharmony had a consequence on the decline in children’s learning motivation in online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. The inability and unpreparedness of parents to accompany their children in online learning throughout the pandemic were crucial factors that caused disharmony. This study suggested the need to expand the cases studied and added data sources to enable understanding of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the disharmony of parents and children.

Abstract

This paper is a reflection of the local defense of the religion that had been marginalized by looking further into the state of the local religious marginalization. In its development, the country never abandoned the religion of his intervention. In fact, very close to the state religion. How and through what medium the conquest of the local religion? This question is the focus of this paper by outlining the three sub-themes. First, it is form or variety of ideas in local religious position. Second, the actors involved in local religious positioning. Third, local response, including the existence of local religious elite, associated with differences in religion and culture of the surrounding community. This paper shows that the state has put religion at the ‘manageble’ position. In fact, the position of religion as an important entity is frequently controlled. Similarly, in this paper, it can be found how local communities respond to the presence of local religious so local religion not only placed in the controlled set, but also constantly challenged by the surrounding environment.

Abstract

This article explored the phenomenon of hijrah among students at several universities in Indonesia. The data used was obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation studies. The findings found two conditions in the religious community that developed within the university. First, uncontrolled religious communities, such as the salaf community (hijrah), were affiliated with radical Islam, Salafi, Wahabi, and Muslim Brotherhood. They were not controlled to moderate religion, breaking unity and peace, like the salaf community. Second, the government could control society because it has a hierarchical line, such as student organizations. This article recommends a thorough study of the phenomenon of hijrah, which has recently become prominent not to deviate from the basic principles of hijrah itself as part of the overall practice of Islamic teachings (kaffah).

Abstract

Abstract

This article discusses the progressive Islamic movement developed by Muhammadiyah, a modernist Islamic organization established by Ahmad Dahlan on November 18, 1918. History has shown that Muhammadiyah, as a modernist Islamic organization, has instigated various social transformations that continue to affect Indonesian society by creating schools, hospitals, and orphanages that were inspired by modern, Westernized systems and modernist interpretations of the Qur'an. Even today, Muhammadiyah remains active in national activities and discourse, continuously responding to the ever-changing times. This article departs from the argument that the progressive movement developed by Muhammadiyah was translated from Ahmad Dahlan's desire to advance the ummah and to create a just and prosperous world, one that has been blessed by God. As such, it argues that Muhammadiyah's response to the problems of its ummah has been informed by the history of the movement and its founders.

Abstract

This study focuses on the way in which Muhammadiyah, one of Indonesia’s largest Islamic organizations, stood in the 2019 General Election. Like its counterpart Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah has marked the moderation of Islam in Indonesia, different from Islam elsewhere in the Middle East. Since its establishment, Muhammadiyah has urged its members not to join any specific political party, but rather to take a moderate position in political pragmatism and support patriotism in broader national interest. Likewise, in the 2019 election, Muhammadiyah did not organizationally support any candidates, citing its “middle way” approach. However, this study identifies a dualism in the political attitudes of Muhammadiyah’s elites. Even without official orders or prohibitions from the central leadership, some Muhammadiyah members got involved and carried their organization’s attributes to support certain candidates, resulting in political division within the organization. Some members of the organization took a clear political stance, whereas others remain neutral. This created tension within the organization in both elite and grass-root level. The main data for this study were collected through interviews, unstructured discussions, and focus group discussions with several Muhammadiyah elites.[Artikel ini melihat posisi yang diambil salah satu organisasi Islam terbesar di Indonesia, Muhammadiyah, dalam Pemilu 2019.

Abstract

This paper aims to explain the forms of Muslim immigrant strategies in Papua in the era of special autonomy. After the implementation of special autonomy in Papua, migrants feel the increasing tension or competition in the economic and political fields. Data obtained through the method of observation, interviews, and literature studies. Observations focused on the economic practices of Muslim migrants in places such as the market in Jayapura, Papua. Interviews were conducted with a number of parties, both Muslim migrants and local Papuans, to obtain information on many things including their response to the presence of Muslim migrants. In addition, data was also obtained through the documentation of literature related to the topic of this paper. The data obtained were then analyzed through the steps of qualitative analysis, namely data reduction, data presentation, drawing conclusions/verification. This paper confirms that Muslim migrants made various efforts to deal with various obstacles in the era of Special Autonomy in Papua in three ways. First, Muslim migrants strengthen the economy, especially the informal sector. Secondly, the political sector is not the main objective of the existence of Muslim migrants. Third, Muslim migrants are not exclusive, especially in establishing communication with indigenous people.

Abstract

Two leading Islamic organisations in Indonesia, Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) have moderation in their missionary vision to create a tolerant, open, and civilised society. This paper explores the challenges of realising Islamic moderation in Indonesia, especially those driven by Muhammadiyah and NU. The data used as the basis for the analysis were obtained from interviews and document studies. The challenge of Islamic moderation initiated by these two organisations is the rise of conservative groups, which have received vast space from the data obtained. This paper emphasised that the rise of conservative groups has resulted in weak respect for other groups. There is even a tendency to resist Islamic groups outside their group. This paper is limited to the internal challenges to Islamic moderation in Indonesia carried out by Muhammadiyah and NU, particularly related to the rise of conservative Islamic groups. Therefore, this paper suggests conducting various studies to provide a basic framework for jointly building a commitment to implement Islamic moderation in Indonesia by looking at other civil society organisations.
