Abstract

AbstractThis study explores the preference for Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) and its influence on the musical aesthetics of students majoring in Music Technology. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach with a practice-based research framework, the research involved active students at the Music Study Program, School of Art and Design Education, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. Data were collected through open-ended questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and documentation of students’ digital music works. The findings reveal that DAW selection is influenced by a combination of technical, pedagogical, and creative factors, with Studio One being the most preferred. The features most utilized by students include mixing effects, MIDI sequencing, and preset plugins. Approximately one-third of the students acknowledged that DAW significantly impacted the structure and aesthetic style of their works, while others emphasized personal identity over technological influence. These results indicate that DAWs act not only as production tools but also as mediators of musical thought and expression. The study suggests the necessity of pedagogical frameworks that encourage both technical proficiency and critical reflection in digital music education. The findings also highlight the need for curriculum development that provides students with diverse DAW platforms to support artistic exploration and identity formation. Abstract

This study explores the transformation of Kungkurung music among the Dayak Meratus community in Piani Village, Tapin Regency, South Kalimantan, from its origin as an agrarian ritual toward a contemporary form of cultural performance. Employing a qualitative ethnographic approach, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation to reveal the symbolic, social, and pedagogical dimensions of Kungkurung. The findings demonstrate that Kungkurung functions as a medium of collective identity formation and ecological spirituality, reflecting Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of habitus and Merriam’s tripartite framework of music as concept, behavior, and sound. The shift from ritual to public performance exemplifies Jeff Todd Titon’s idea of “continuity in change,” indicating that the community’s adaptation preserves traditional meanings while embracing new socio-cultural contexts. Ethnopedagogically, Kungkurung embodies four educational values collectively, discipline, spirituality, and ecological harmony that sustain intergenerational transmission of cultural wisdom. The study concludes that Kungkurung represents not merely a musical expression but an evolving pedagogical system that integrates art, environment, and social cohesion, thus contributing to cultural sustainability and character education rooted in local wisdom.

Abstract

The Sundanese Kacapi Siter exhibits distinctive microtonal characteristics and acoustic phenomena requiring objective documentation. This study integrates high-fidelity audio recording with Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis to examine the microtonal properties of the Pelog Sunda tuning system and the missing fundamental phenomenon in this traditional instrument. Using Practice-Led Research methodology, we recorded 20 single-note samples with a Neumann TLM 103 condenser microphone in natural reflective classroom conditions, analyzing them through SPAN FFT spectral analysis and cent deviation calculations against 12-TET standards. Results demonstrate systematic microtonality with deviations ranging from -15 to +28 cents, with note "Ti" consistently sharp (+17 to +28 cents) and note "Na" consistently flat (-5 to -13 cents) across octaves (p<0.001, effect size d=2.4). Spectral analysis reveals a missing fundamental phenomenon in low-register notes (La 4: 58.2 Hz, Ti 4: 66.5 Hz), where harmonics dominate perceived pitch despite weak fundamental-frequency energy (-14.3 to -8.9 dBFS fundamental vs. -6.2 to -4.1 dBFS second harmonic). These findings provide quantitative evidence that Sundanese tuning represents a structured non-Western pitch system with intentional microtonal design, advancing computational ethnomusicology through objective acoustic documentation methods that enable preservation, comparative analysis, and technological applications in digital instrument development.

Abstract

Music education supports creative expression, emotional development, and cognitive growth. During the last several years, digital game-based learning (DGBL) has been used to maintain student engagement, but its presence in music education varies considerably. Some teachers experiment with small-scale game tools, while others adapt existing commercial games for classroom use. This study maps how digital games were used in music education from 2020 to 2025, a period shaped by the shift to remote and hybrid learning after COVID-19, when many educators had to reconsider how students could practice musical skills without face-to-face instruction. A scoping review was conducted using Publish or Perish to identify studies indexed in Scopus and Google Scholar. The review followed the PRISMA 2020 framework and included peer-reviewed publications as well as relevant grey literature (e.g., theses, classroom-developed projects), acknowledging that many pedagogical innovations in music education are not always disseminated through formal journals. The initial search resulted in 124 records; after screening for eligibility and methodological clarity, 26 studies were included in the synthesis. Most studies emphasized ear-training and quiz-based game formats, while rhythm-based, exploratory, and curriculum-integrated designs appeared less frequently. Research contexts were dominated by beginner learners, elementary education, and university courses, with only a small number of studies focusing on senior high school contexts. These findings highlight gaps in current research and indicate the need for future game designs that support sustained perceptual training and integrate culturally grounded approaches to music learning.

Abstract

This article discusses oral traditions in Indonesia, especially in the Gorontalo community. The aim is to examine the extent of the process of maintaining and developing the oral tradition in Gorontalo, especially the form of reciprocal rhyme called Pa'iya lo hungo lo poli. This type of rhyme is sung by two young people taking turns, and the rhyme consists of four lines in each stanza, and each stanza is followed by a response to the rhyme which has the same rhyme and rhythm. This pantun can also be a means of social communication and fun entertainment for the people of Gorontalo. What is researched is the process of learning the Pa'iya lo hungo lo poli pantun, and what is the context of life values that can be learned from it through the behavior shown by the supporting community. The research results show that the pantun learning process is carried out non-formally, especially on a community basis through oral traditions passed down between generations, especially among families, and has an impact on the expression of a harmonious life based on the noble values found in the meaning of pantun poetry. This reflection is also part of efforts to preserve and promote the existence of the Pa'iya lo hungo lo poli pantun as part of Gorontalo's local cultural heritage.

Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of the reminiscence bump within the context of digital music through the YouTube platform. The reminiscence bump refers to the tendency of individuals to recall events from adolescence to early adulthood more vividly, which in this study is activated through exposure to music from the 1990s and 2000s. Data were collected from 100 user comments on nostalgic music compilation videos and analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The results indicate that music from adolescence and early adulthood evokes strong and emotional autobiographical memories. Dominant themes include school-time nostalgia, loss of loved ones, life reflection, and specific memories tied to particular songs. Music was found to be an effective medium for connecting the past to one's current identity. These findings support the theory that although media have transitioned to digital formats, the structure of autobiographical memory remains consistent. This study contributes to the fields of music psychology and memory research and highlights the potential application of nostalgic music in therapeutic and educational settings.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of parental motivation on students' guitar learning outcomes at the Percik Music School. The background of this research is based on the important role parents play in supporting children's learning processes, particularly in the context of non-formal music education such as guitar courses. Although many studies have shown that parental motivation significantly contributes to academic achievement, few have specifically investigated this relationship within private instrumental music learning. This study employs a quantitative approach with a correlational research design. The sample consists of 35 students and their parents who actively participate in the guitar learning program. The instruments used include a parental motivation questionnaire and documentation of students' learning outcome scores. The data were analyzed using classical assumption tests, Pearson correlation, and simple linear regression. The results of the classical assumption tests indicate that the data are normally distributed, free from heteroscedasticity, and meet the linearity assumption. However, the Pearson correlation test results show no significant relationship between parental motivation and students' guitar learning outcomes (r = -0.207; p = 0.290). The regression results also indicate that parental motivation does not have a significant effect on learning outcomes (p = 0.290). These findings suggest that other factors, such as students’ intrinsic motivation, frequency of independent practice, or the quality of instruction, play a greater role in determining guitar learning outcomes. Therefore, effective guitar learning should not rely solely on parental support but also aim to strengthen students' internal motivation and active engagement in the music learning process.
