Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the digital transformation of changing rural economy towards a digital society. Qualitative research methods were used, including 50 participants and in-depth interview informants, with participatory observation, policy analysis, and three series of focus group discussions both in person and online. The study found that internet intervention significantly impacts collective behaviour and improves MSMEs development. Referring to the continuum theory of Gemeinschaft-Gesellschaft, the study showed that these changes result in the formation of a ‘Neue Gemeinschaft’. Rural MSMEs are entering a new era due to the adoption of digital technology by businesses that support and exhibit characteristics such as the intensity of the use of internet networks, the ability to conduct digital transactions, and the preservation of village social values. Theoretically and empirically, the research indicates that digital transformation is driven by a change in collective behaviour around technology use, followed by inclusive rural digital economy.

Abstract

Tourism development in many cases induces various socio-cultural consequences at the local community level. In Banyuwangi, local government commoditizes traditional rites of the Osing community for tourism purposes. Framed by Granovetter’s social embeddedness and Bentham’s utilitarianism, this study investigated the socio-cultural consequences of tourism development and portrayed how it influenced ethics in tourism activities of the Osing community. Following qualitative research with interviews and observation, the results suggested that Osing economic activities reflected cultural commodification. The cultural commodification expanded social networks in the relational and structural embeddedness that were operated by trust among the actors. While relational embeddedness was recognized on the personal relation, structural embeddedness was identified among government institutions, private sectors, Pokdarwis, and Osing community. Although the cultural commodification was identified, the ethical economic activities remained on collective values, or so called as collective utilitarianisms. The cultural commodification derived to widen social networks, yet the communal ethical economy remained the same. The study proposed community members to construct economic activities based on local values that were utilized to strengthen their socio-cultural identity. The study allowed better understanding of sociological consequences as undergirding framework in policy making and business cooperation.

The Akit community generally uses mangrove wood as raw material for charcoal. The purpose of this study was to analyze (a) the development of the charcoal-making business, (b) the type of social action in the Akit community's charcoal-making business, and (c) the dynamics of the charcoal-making business. This research was conducted using an ethnographic approach. The results: from the 1980s to 1994, production was initially regulated solely to meet local needs. In the era of 1995 to 2005, it experienced a high market demand for mangrove charcoal along with a flourishing business network with Malaysian toke. After 2005 the charcoal business dimmed again due to government regulations. The actors involved in the charcoal business are workers, owners of very small panglongs, and owners of small panglongs (tokes). The social action run the panglong business as an effort to meet their family needs, and thus they worked based on instrumental rationality. These charcoal-making entrepreneurs operated their businesses based on instrumental and traditional actions. The social action of the toke actor is instrumental rationality and value-oriented rationality. The dynamics of the charcoal business in the Akit community have experienced ups and downs.

Abstract

An agricultural partnership is one of the ways adopted by oil palm plantation smallholders to survive and be sustainable in the face of global competition. The agricultural partnership that is based on a contract agreement is also aimed at maintaining the welfare of the involved smallholders. Partnership in agricultural production is part of the management system or mode of economic production agreed upon by both large-scale companies and smallholders. An unbalanced arrangement sometimes occurs due to the power dominance of large-scale company interests that leads to unfair relationships in the partnership between smallholders and large-scale corporations. This study used a qualitative research method with a case study as the main approach. By taking the case of the agricultural partnership of oil palm plantation smallholders in Perembang Village and Begori Village, Regency of Sintang of West Kalimantan, this study found four typologies of social agricultural production relations, namely asymmetric partnership, exploitative partnership, distrust partnership, and forced partnership.

Abstract

Differences in land access on Pasaran Island reflect complex inequalities between local and migrant groups, and between communities with different economic power. The social-ecological dynamics involved control of land resources and reclamation. The absence of appropriate regulations has led to tensions. Using a qualitative method using in-depth interviews with 14 informants. Informant selection based on purposive sampling technique based on criteria, primary data was collected from 14 informants who were directly involved in the social-ecological dynamics created on Pasaran Island, including the Local Government (Marine and Fisheries Office of Bandar Lampung City and Land Office of Bandar Lampung City), Head of Village, Head of Neighborhood Association, Local Community (Bugis), Migrant Community (Cirebon and Indramayu), and Community Leaders.  Data collection was closed after data saturation was reached when no more new information emerged, and the data collected as a whole formed a complete story. This research explores issues of access struggle and social-ecological dynamics within the framework of access theory. Based on understanding these land access and socio-ecological dynamics, the government can take more appropriate steps to manage resources, prevent conflict, and support environmental sustainability and community welfare on Pasaran Island.

Abstract

Forests hold diverse meanings and functions, serving both as natural resources and as critical sources of livelihood for local communities. Beyond providing essential raw materials that sustain human life, forests play a fundamental role in maintaining ecosystem functions and biodiversity. For indigenous peoples and rural populations residing in forest-adjacent areas, forests are deeply embedded in cultural practices and traditional knowledge, shaping their ways of life. In addition to their ecological significance, forests also serve as vital sources of livelihood for local communities. The residents of Kota Baru Village, for instance, depend on the resources of the Kerinci Seblat National Park (TNKS) forest area. Consequently, despite legal restrictions, they continue to engage in agricultural activities within the protected area. This study examines the livelihood structures, access mechanisms, and socio-ecological relationships of farming households surrounding the Kerinci Seblat National Park. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research findings indicate that resource extraction—through agriculture and forest product collection—contributes significantly to household incomes. Farming households utilize four primary mechanisms to access forest resources within the national park: capital, technology, social identity, and market engagement. This access has fostered intricate socio-ecological relationships between households and the forest, which manifest in three distinct forms: co-existence, subsistence, and exploitation.

Abstract

This study analyzes the inability of “peasant organization” to control irrigation resources in rural-urban areas. Water disputes have arisen among peasants in rural-urban areas due to their limited capacity to organize themselves and manage available resources. This research seeks to examine the weaknesses in the role of peasant organizations in coordinating the use of irrigation resources. This study is a qualitative research using case study approach, focusing on Bayen sub-village, District of Sleman Special Region of Yogyakarta. The data collection process was done via in-depth interviews, documentation techniques, and field observation. The analyst’s work progressed from study preparation to data verification and conclusion. The research reveals that elite peasants have become central actors in water disputes, undermining the effectiveness of peasant organizations. Furthermore, both local and village governments fail to adequately support these organizations due to budgetary constraints and limited policymaking capacity. The “peasant organization” also does not have sufficient capacity to coordinate with other peasants in many different areas surrounding Bayen sub-village. The study shows that the bad condition of irrigation in Bayen sub-village is related to the lack of capacity of peasants to negotiate with different actors that have many different interests. Urban economic expansion led to the establishment of an ice factory, disrupting peasant irrigation systems. The toll road project, a consequence of urban economic expansion, has also disrupted irrigation systems in the region. As a result of these problems, the peasants, together with the head of Bayen sub-village, can only promote the use of toll drainage as an emergency irrigation measure.
