Abstract

This paper explains the modernization of Islamic education through a case study of the Integrated Islamic School Network (JSIT) in North Sumatra. The shifting educational landscape and the rising demands of a globalized society propel the need for modernizing Islamic education in Indonesia. Traditional Islamic educational institutions like madrasahs and pesantren are complemented by integrated Islamic schools that balance religious teachings with contemporary academic knowledge. This transformation addresses the educational needs of Indonesia's large Muslim population while preserving Islamic values and identity. The emergence of these integrated schools indicates a significant shift towards a more holistic educational approach that includes both Islamic and secular curricula, reflecting the dual demand for spiritual guidance and competitive academic performance. This study explores the impact of the modernization of Islamic education through a network of Integrated Islamic Schools in North Sumatra, Indonesia. It investigates how these schools integrate traditional Islamic values with modern educational practices and how this affects educational outcomes and community perception. Employing a qualitative research design with a phenomenological approach, the study gathers in-depth descriptive data through interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis from multiple Integrated Islamic Schools. This method provides a comprehensive understanding of the educational transformations and their implications on students and educators. The results showed that JSIT North Sumatra has implemented various educational innovations, including using technology in learning, an integrated curriculum, and participatory teaching methods. This modernization process improves the quality of education in general and strengthens the integration of Islamic values in the curriculum and school activities. This study provides insights into how Islamic education can evolve to meet the needs of modern times without losing its Islamic essence.

Abstract

This research was conducted with the aim of providing a clear picture of the philosophical and sociological basis for the existence of traditional pesantren in the midst of modernization, so that it can be illustrated with strong reasons to remain with the traditional pesantren. The method chosen in this study is a qualitative method. In terms of approach, this research utilizes a field research descriptiveThe action taken by the researcher was to go to the 'field' to make observations about Against Modernization: The Existence of Traditional Islamic Boarding Schools in North Padang Lawas Regency. The findings in this study. First, the philosophical basis for the existence of traditional pesantren in the midst of modernization is the advice of the clergy, parents and because the kyai wishes to produce cadres of scholars, the great glory of teaching knowledge, and the wish to preserve the understanding of ahlussunnah wal jama'ah. The first two sociological foundations are that the pesantren still receives assistance and enthusiasm from the community, such as assistance with dormitories, classrooms, the Koran, and sending their children to these traditional pesantren. Second, because many alumni have succeeded, such as teachers, lecturers, DPR, DPRD and DPRI. The three traditional Islamic boarding schools in North Padang Lawas Regency still receive support from both the regional and central governments such as BOS funds, classrooms, multilevel dormitories and several other things. From this, the researcher concludes that traditional Islamic boarding schools will still be able to survive as they are typical in this modern era, if the traditional Islamic boarding school clerics have the right guidelines in developing their traditional Islamic boarding schools. So that the good aim is to prove to the public its ability to produce quality generations and be able to compete can be trusted by the wider community.

Abstract

In the 1980s the Pesantren Al-Mukmin Ngruki began to get a negative image. The pesantren is considered a candidate for the Negara Islam Indonesia (NII), because there are two founding figures, namely Abdullah Sungkar and Abu Bakar Ba'asyir. They were plotted as individuals and extremists against the Kartosuwiryo movement. Various negative accusations made in various momentums and media as well as slanted views on the Pesantren Al-Mukmin Ngruki are still in the spotlight by various parties. In fact, until now various negative assumptions and accusations from both the eyes of the domestic and international public are still leveled at the Pesantren Al-Mukmin Ngruki, whereas this has never been proven at all. This study aims to find and analyze the historical institutional dynamics of the Pesantren Al-Mukmin Ngruki in 1972-2021. The research method used is qualitative with a historical approach using four steps, namely: heuristics, criticism, interpretation and historiography. The results of this study reveal that the historical institutional dynamics of the Pesantren Al-Mukmin Ngruki have a religious background. This means that the establishment of the Pesantren Al-Mukmin Ngruki was the result of the missionary journey of preachers in Surakarta, bearing in mind that during the transition period from the Old Order government to the New Order government, the area of Surakarta was a communist base and became the main target of Christianization which needed the attention of Muslims.
