Abstract

The history of architectural theory can be seen as a debate between those who place more emphasis on form than function. or vice versa. It is around these themes that the differences between the architects of the late 19th century and the Modernists are best understood. Then came the architects of the postmodern period, in about the last quarter of the 20th century, who added aspects of meaning and considered them important in architecture. This paper aims to understand the form-function-meaning relation in architecture in the case of Kampong Aquarium, Jakarta, Indonesia, with an architectural qualitative descriptive method. The results of the study show that there has been a significant change in the form-function-meaning of Kampong Aquarium, especially since the evictions in 2016. Because the phenomenon of Architectural Change (form-function-meaning relationship) Kampong Aquarium is relatively new, there has not been much research on it. So that this research is expected to open up opportunities for further research with the same theme.

Abstract

Cohesion and coherence are pivotal aspects of academic writing. Although the analysis of these elements in academic texts has garnered considerable attention from researchers worldwide, there remains a notable paucity of studies focused on the research backgrounds of student texts, particularly with respect to their educational level. This study sought to explore how the effective utilization of Theme-Rheme structures can enhance the overall clarity and organization of students’ research backgrounds. Employing a qualitative content analysis approach inspired by Krippendorff (2004), this study meticulously scrutinizes fifty samples of academic papers to discern the prevalence and variations of Theme-Rheme patterns and their impact on the logical flow of information. The thematic structure formulated by Halliday & Matthiessen (2004/2014) and the thematic progression framework by Bloor & Bloor (2004) were instrumental in analyzing the data. The findings reveal that students utilize a variety of theme types in their research backgrounds. The unmarked theme is the most prevalent, accounting for 55% in undergraduate theses (UT), 54% in master's theses (MT), and 59% in doctoral dissertations (DD). Following this, the textual theme is utilized at rates of 30% in UT, 34% in MT, and 31% in DD. The marked theme appears less frequently, comprising about 13% in UT, 11% in MT, and 8% in DD, while the interpersonal theme is rarely employed, with an approximate usage of 2% across all educational levels. This study sheds light on the significance of Theme-Rheme structures in academic writing and offers valuable insights for educators and students alike, who are striving to enhance the quality of their academic papers.

Abstract

Effective titles captivate readers and encapsulate the essence of a work. This is especially true in novel translation, where titles bridge cultural gaps and introduce readers to new worlds. Thus, it is becoming a crucial consideration for translators when translating a title. They must transfer it meticulously from the source text (ST) into the target text (TT). One of the critical texts to be studied is a novel for its unique naming, which can be a significant challenge for translators. Hence, this study tried to examine how the novel title in English is translated into Indonesian and discover the following factors for using each title. Mixed method approached was to identify the type of title used towards the novel. It closes the gap that exists between qualitative and quantitative approaches. The data were collected from 114 English novels and their translations published before 2000. Accessibility was an essential criteria in selecting these titles, which are more consistent in terms of language and structure. This study discovered that the literal title translation type is the most prevalent, with 38.6% frequency, while the alternative title type denotes 35.1% frequency. Moreover, the researchers found 21.9% of data in the naturalized loan title category. The loan title with original orthography is the most minor category, with only 4.4% of the data. Further examination also highlights the need to consider shifts and meanings in exploring how Indonesian novel titles are translated. This paper also revealed several linguistic and cultural factors for utilizing each title type. As a result, title translation patterns offer translators practical insights to improve cross-cultural literary perspectives and the nuanced presentation of novel titles in varied language contexts.

Abstract

Project-based learning (PjBL) integrated with information and communication technology (ICT) has emerged as a promising learning model to nurture students' 4Cs skills (critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity) in the EFL classroom. Therefore, this study aims to explore the perceived benefits and challenges of integrating PjBL with ICT in nurturing students' 4Cs skills in EFL classrooms. The research employed a qualitative single case study design involving semi-structured interviews with four EFL teachers and focus group discussions with twelve students. Thematic analysis was conducted on the collected data to identify emerging themes and patterns. The findings revealed several perceived benefits, including improved oral and written communication abilities, enhanced individual and group collaboration, clearly defined and implemented problems and solutions, and fostered creative idea generation, selection, and presentation. However, challenges such as time management issues, technical problems, physical and psychological burdens, and lack of sufficient teacher training and scaffolding were also identified. The study suggests that integrating PjBL with ICT can nurture the 4Cs skills essential for success in the 21st century. However, effective implementation necessitates resolving the highlighted issues, which include adequate teacher training, resource allocation, and support mechanisms. The implications of the research extend beyond the EFL classroom, showing the potential of this pedagogical model to cultivate crucial 21st-century skills across diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

The interplay of gender, ethnicity, and religious identifications plays an important role in the daily lives of Indonesians (Bertrand, 2004; Hoon, 2013; Ikasari, 2009; 2020; Suryadinata, et al., 2003).This study looks at Indonesian young girls' ways of being ethnic and religious, in relation to their schooling experiences to determine the manner in which these schoolgirls construct their ethnic and religious identities in the school environment. It is expected to add on to previous and current studies of women/girls in the Indonesian context. Located in a public secondary co-educational school in Yogyakarta, the study involved three schoolgirls from the Chinese ethnicity and Christian religion. Drawing on cultural studies and feminism of identity and difference as the theoretical and methodological framework, the study attempted to explore Indonesian schoolgirls' experiences and constructions of ethnicity and religion. This research is a qualitative descriptive study using case study as its method. The research data were collected from free-format, short autobiography essays written by the participants, individual and group interviews, and observation as well as online communications. Data analyses were initially carried out through data coding as determined by the research questions. The findings show that, first, the three ethnic-religious groups in this study namely the Chinese-Kristiani girls set up binaries of their essentialised understandings of being ethnic and religious members. Second, there are different ways of learning shaped by their ethnicity and religion. These two identities, in turn, shape their learning outcomes within and beyond their schooling site.

Abstract

Within the last 20 years, TED has become an influential platform that provides knowledge and education by directing speakers on giving motivational speeches. This paper aims to analyze gender attitudes while delivering the speech and how they influence the audience. This study applied a descriptive qualitative method by using Synthetic Personalization by Fairclough (2001) and a Social-semiotic approach by Van Leeuwen (2008) to the selected TED videos to analyze the data and corpus linguistics, namely AntConc, as the tool to analyze the vocabularies, first-person and second-person concordances presented. The findings show 1.101 vocabularies used by men and 1.156 vocabularies that denote synthetic personalization used by women. Although the strategies they used are different, men’s and women’s speeches have successfully influenced the audience by immersing synthetic personalization to bring intimate, engagement, and personal relationships towards the mass audience by bringing up the feeling of ‘similarity’. The social-semiotic covers social distance and social interaction between men and women toward the audiences. Women are more socially considerate while men are more direct in their speech. The distance and interactions are subjected as a form of representation of closeness.

Abstract

It is widely believed that L2 learners who have positive attitudes towards the target culture and its people are likely to learn the target language more effectively than those who do not possess such attitudes. As technology continues to be increasingly integrated into language learning, this article aims to explore EFL students' attitudes towards technology acceptance via Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), as well as the potential advantages of VLE in the EFL classroom. A quantitative approach was employed in this study, which involved 30 students from English language education departments at a private university in Indonesia. The students' computer attitudes were assessed using a Likert scale questionnaire with four factors, including affective, perceived usefulness, perceived control, and behavioural intention. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) developed by Davis (1989) was utilized as the framework to further examine these factors. The results indicated that the students had a positive attitude towards the Computer Attitude Scale (CAS) factors, which were categorized into affective, perceived usefulness, perceived control, and behavioural intention. The implications of each of these categories in the framework are discussed in relation to behaviourism theory.

Abstract

Classroom management continues to be a teacher's struggle for teaching performances because it relates to students learning. There needs to be more understanding and knowledge about managing the students and classrooms with diverse student behaviour to solve the problems, particularly when identifying students' problems and understanding their different characteristics. However, this study explored teacher classroom management strategies in teaching speaking classes, especially in secondary schools. This study aims to (1) explore and describe the classroom management used by English teachers in teaching speaking. (2) find out the teacher strategy used to deal with the students' problems during classroom management's teaching and learning speaking process. (3) examine the impact of classroom management strategy in teaching practice. This study uses semi-structured interviews, observations, and document analysis to collect the data. The data findings reveal that teachers have different ways of dealing with different classroom situations based on their experiences and understanding, especially in speaking classes. Most of them claim to take action on how to respond to students' problems, such as understanding classroom management strategies, organizing, problem-solving, and applying teaching strategies. These strategies have a positive impact on learning engagement in the classroom, such as the students being more interested in learning English lessons, obeying the rules, talking actively, and having motivation.
