Abstract

Abstract: Gender issue in pesantren (or Islamic Boarding School) is a part of larger gender problem in Indonesia, either in education and in religion. The main indicator of this problem is vivid gap between males and females. This issue is actually not a new thing for there are a bunch of Indonesian novels serve it. Those novels touching pesantren in the theme usually put the women as a powerless, subordinated, inferior, marginalized person. However, the novel Perempuan Berkalung Sorban(PBS) tries to empower women. In the novel, the woman is portrayed as brilliant, brave, and also critical toward the pesantren hegemony such as: the power relation between santri (students) and kiai (teachers), the understanding on classical books (kitab kuning), social relation between men and women in pesantren ciircumstances, and many more. Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACT. This article explores how LGBTQ people in the West use film as a space for narrating themselves. LGBTQ people remain marginalized, being stigmatized as parasites who disrupt the established socio-cultural order and blamed for HIV/AIDS pandemic. Robin Campillo's film 120 Battements par Minute (120 Beats per Minute) deals specifically with how the LGBTQ community has been scapegoated. Girard argues that, when a crisis occurs, a social group must be sacrificed during a crisis occurs in order to resolve it. For its analysis, this article applies the multimodal discourse approach proposed by Gunther Kress and Theo Van Leewuen to images and still frames from the film, finding that the LGBTQ community has been scapegoated through stereotypes and prejudices. As they have been popularly identified with the HIV/AIDS crisis, members of the LGBTQ community have been blamed—and expected to take responsibility—for it. Keywords: Multimodal Discourse analysis, scapegoat, LGBT film, HIV/AIDS.

Abstract

Jeanne d'Arc has been the wellknown female hero in the Westem tradition. However, the opinion about this hero has varied according to how people interprete her existence. She was known using God's voice in order to convince the French army in defeating British troops. Some of the interpreters have argued that she used that voice to manipulate French troops in order to get her own glory. Others have argued that she was a real hero that passed over the French men's heroism. This article attempts to explore this female heroism from spiritual point of view. It is argued that the spiritual approach used by Jeanne d'Arc was not a manipulation but a strategy to negotiate power mostly handled by men in the arena of conflict.

Abstract

[The research talks about revealing with religion point of structuralism discourse on patriarchal and misogynic in three works of "Adab Am Qillah Adab?", "Qiṣṣah Fatḥiyyah al-Miṣriyyah" and Zīnah by Nawāl Al-Sa'dāwī which is seeing the Big Other of gender issue and the method of exegeses texts. The value of research takes on gender and religion with focus micro-hermeneutical problems (asbabunnuzul of verses) and language and holy book on reading texts with a biased view. The big Another issue is a case with a symbolic rule to becomes a patriarchal image on perennial discourse. It is to be a traumatic woman incident on religious tyrannies. As part of Žižek's theory, the Big Other issues contain lack meaning with no perfect talk discuss. The points analyses are the internal factor (irrationality and kontra-factuality) and the external factor (the economic and political factors). Perennial discourses make for reading Al-Qur'an with patriarchal power. "Lack" in the Big Other issues makes the open-minded for challenge and critic for women's rights issues in Religion Studies.]

Abstract

A Thousand Splendid Suns] The novel A Thousand Splendid Suns talks about the solidarity of two women who are the first and second wives from different ages and social classes in Afghanistan's political turmoil setting. Polygamy usually produces competition between wives, but both women actually have a strong solidarity in facing the violence of their husband, society, and state. The problem in this research is why solidarity is underlined as a community phenomenon when facing times of crisis, such as situations of violence and conflict. This study uses the concept of women's solidarity and gender intersection from Chandra Talpade Mohanty. The study aims to explain the solidarity causes among women in this novel, which is underlined as a community phenomenon when facing a crisis. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with data related to issues of solidarity and gender intersection. This research revealed that women's solidarity strengthens when they are in the same crisis. The only way to subvert masculine domination in the form of violence is through solidarity. Keywords: solidarity; gender intersection; A Thousand Splendid Suns; Chandra Mohanty

Abstract

This paper starts with the question: Why do Protestant churches in Asia have different levels of accommodating women in leadership? By taking two case studies - the Evangelical Church of Vietnam (ECVN) and the Toraja Church in Indonesia that have similar starting points but different levels of transformation regarding women’s leadership, the paper aims to explore how the cultural, political, and religious contexts of these churches are different and how they contribute to the different process of church transformation toward women-inclusive leadership based on both primary and secondary data. Abstract

There have been many popular fiction novels in the literature world that raise how women enter the economic aspect. One of them is the novel Opening Belle written by Maureen Sherry and published in 2016. Opening Belle represents women’s participation in the financial sector because they want a good life. This research is studied with the feminist political economy theory proposed by Jacqui True. In her book, The Political Economy of Violence against Women, True explains that economic globalization has changed women’s lives becoming financially independent. However, on the other hand, women involved in the public sphere are underappreciated and receive sexual harassment or violence, making it difficult for women to participate in the economic aspect. This research uses the descriptive qualitative method. With this method, the writer takes parts of the novel in the form of words, sentences, paragraphs which explain the economic aspect and women’s participation in it. This research is analyzed through the explanations and utterances of the characters. The results of this study are: first, the participation of women as breadwinners in this novel is started as part of her life experiences and is driven by the hardships of her family; second, women are highly motivated figures so that they implement several strategies to survive in their office, namely by proving their competence, joining the GCC women’s community and voicing equal rights in the workplace. In conclusions, economic globalization opens up women’s opportunity to become the sole breadwinner in the family.

Abstract

Women have been narrated by men authors since classical literature; this has continued into contemporaryliterature. In the 19th century, many authors were interested in narrating and positioning women intheir novels. This period can be considered one of transition, in which traditionality and modernity werecontested because of influences from the industrial revolution and many other social movements inEurope. This period was also one of challenge, with the appearance of Gustave Flaubert’s novel MadameBovary, which was questioned because of moralistic issues. If in the early 19th century traditionalitywas represented by Eugénie Grandet and Balzac’s figures of woman, but in the middle of the centuryFlaubert dealt with freedom of sexuality, what discourses were presented in between these two differentperiods? This article aims at explaining the bridging of the gap between the symbols of traditionalityand modernity, especially through the representation of women. Mérimée’s novel, Colomba, depicts theagency of a woman named Colomba. In this novel, Mérimée not only showed the position of women visà vis men in parental or conjugal relation, like in the novels Eugénie Grandet or Madame Bovary. Rather, the author attempted to look at the relationship between masculinities and femininities in a Corsicancontext, in which the intersection of gender and social class (as well as traditions) was different than inthe Parisian context. The relation between the novel and the social structure in the 19th century Europeplays an important part in the discussion and explanation of the relationship between the literature andsocial narration of that period
