Abstract

The purpose of this study is to map the vulnerable Javanese language in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, namely in the City of Yogyakarta and in the regencies of Sleman, Gunungkidul, Kulon Progo, and Bantul. Furthermore, it seeks to understand the role of different agents in preserving the Javanese language in those areas. Due to the dominating use of Indonesian language, the Javanese language has decreased in usage in various modes of communication in schools especially Jawa krama (medium-register variety). Making this language vulnerability mapping is important to locate in the context of the region, the language vulnerability that occurs more than other regions. This mapping can be used by the policy makers to strengthen the Javanese language used in the regions. A geographic information system was used to map the language's vulnerability in this region. The findings of this research are, first, there is an even distribution of the level of language vulnerability throughout the region, especially in the declining usage of Jawa krama. Second, schools no longer serve as agents in the preservation of the usage and competence of the Javanese language, especially Jawa krama. Third, family and social environments still hold potential for the preservation of the Javanese language, although mostly for Jawa ngoko.

Abstract

Abortion is a complex issue. On the one hand, abortion is an illegal act according to positive law and is prohibited by religion in Indonesia. On the other hand, abortion is a shortcut to solving unwanted pregnancies by married and unmarried couples. This study aims to see how the media frames news about illegal abortion, how positive law regulates this act and what the triggers doing illegal abortion. This research is qualitative research with a content analysis approach. The results of the study show that the media tends to be neutral by not taking sides between the perpetrators and the victims. This research also reveals the fact that the high demand of the Indonesian people for an illegal abortion service is at least triggered by two things, the legal system, and social norms applied in Indonesia. The legal system prohibiting abortion in Indonesia is incapable to prevent and provide a deterrent effect against perpetrators of abortion criminalization. In addition, Indonesian society’s system of social norms is very sensitive to immoral cases, such as pregnancy out of wedlock. As a result, many pregnant women who are out of wedlock choose to hide their pregnancies and then secretly carry out illegal abortions

Abstract

Travel is a momentum to look inside that influences the travelers' existence, along with meeting and interacting with others. The self as a traveler experiences internal dynamics reflected in the travel writings. This paper analyzes five French travel writings to reveal the self-construction of travelers who explored the East in the 19th century. The analysis results show that travelers’ self-construction is divided into Enlightenment or Romantic subjects and true travelers or travelers as tourists. The Enlightenment subject prioritizes facts and empirical knowledge outside of the self for the broader interest. In contrast, the Romantic subject puts forward subjective and emotional attitudes in dealing with and narrating others used for personal gain. True travelers look for difficulties in other places to prove themselves in conquering the challenges. Travelers as tourists try to avoid the obstacles by seeking safety and comfort during the trip. The East as a travel destination is a space that offers difficulties in constructing and legitimizing the traveler's self-image with the attributes that society expects, such as courage and persistence. The five French travelers, both Enlightenment or Romantic subjects and true travelers or tourists, had various knowledge of the others due to factors such as the purpose of the trip, profession, social status, and duration of the trip. Knowledge of the others and self-disclosure narrated in travel writings manifest the French travelers’ power to control and manage themselves and represent the Other.

Abstract

[The article aims to explore the relation between the work of literature and the social changes on the politics of sexuality. In general, literary works written by male authors, historically have a lot of content that positions women as objects, especially related to their body and sexuality. After the incident of September, 11, 2001, which coincidentally almost in the same time with the emergence of the Refromasi era in Indonesia, both in Indonesia and France, more Islamic-themed work were written. By analyzing Islamic-themed works written by male authors, namely, Syngué Sabour Pierre de Patience by Atiq Rahimi and Ayat-Ayat Cinta, by Habiburrahman ElShirazy, this article uses a theoretical lens by highliting the concept of the politics of sexuality. Critical discourse analysis method is used as an attempt to understand the operation of the power of language in these works. This article focused on the fundamental aspects considered by the authors to justify the control over women’s body and sexuality. This research finds that women’s body and sexuality are controlled both physically and symbolically, not only by men but also by their families and society. The objective is to control the public morality and to perpetuate the religiously, culturally, and politically institutionalized male dominant regime.]

Abstract

The issue of women and Islamism has been an increasing area of study to explore considering the number of women subscribing to the ideology continues to rise. Plenty of research has been conducted on this subject, but those available suggest that women were fragile victims of the ideology and were portrayed as passive actors who enact no agency. As we shall see, this research finds the opposite. Exploring the motivation and activism of the Ideological Muslimah community in Yogyakarta through a passionate politics approach, it discovers the agential practices of women in Islamist movement. Their motivation and engagement in Islamist politics demonstrate pluralities of women’s experiences and affirm the strong nexus of agency, emotion, and identity. By focusing on the agency and the play of emotion, this article aims to provide an alternate perspective to the burgeoning study of feminism and social movement, which has thus far been dominated by rational calculation of the action.

Abstract

HIjrah is not only limited on human relation with God, but also how hijrah discourse existence is delivered in the media as discourse battle arena. Niqab is a characteristic of a woman going through hijrah. By using multimodality of Gunther Kress and Theo van Leuween, this critical discourse digs deeper on phenomena of woman in niqab and contestation of piety show-off in the media. Based on analysis performed on four accounts of woman with niqab in Instagram, narration found that the most massive show-off action of piety are performed by niqabis, that is in the act of religious activities, such as reading Al-Qur'an, praying, suggestion on sadaqa and five-times prayer. Moreover, piety representation is also performed by using quotes in Arabian language and Arabian woman figure as illustration to legitimate the hijrah journey of a woman in niqab. Piety, not only it displays woman in covering clothes, but also intersection with popular culture. It’s existence is put together with the incidentally profane Korean wave love romance  This phenomena shows a paradox where there is incorporation of religious sacredness with the often considered profane Korean wave.

Abstract

The endless oppression of patriarchy creates competition in women's relationships. Women observe, defeat, insult, belittle, and overthrow each other, which is included in the acts of internalized misogyny. Internalized misogyny is a tool used by patriarchy to keep women as subordinate by diverting women's attention from opposing patriarchy to fighting among themselves. Internalized misogyny strengthens the oppression of women in society. Women evaluate other women from their behavior, physical appearance, and even their private lives. Discriminatory acts such as mockery, bullying, labeling, decreasing women's value, and exploitation of women's rights unknowingly also have been committed by women. Thus, the main focus of this paper is to reveal how internalized misogyny occurs in the process of women’s opposition to patriarchy that is included in a movie entitled Lady J. This movie shows that unknowingly for women, in an attempt to defeat patriarchy, women sacrificed other women. The movie narrates a story of a Marquise who is a female aristocrat in France who intends to take revenge on her ex-husband by working with a family of prostitutes. The aim of this paper is to examine internalized misogyny depicted in Lady J movie and to criticize the movies containing internalized misogyny acts that tend to be unrealized or even normalized. This research uses theories of misogyny, bad women, and silencing by Kate Manne and the relations of the patriarchal system and the internalization of discrimination by Sheryl Sandberg. This research uses data collection and analysis methods that reveal the action of internalized misogyny that occurs in the relationship between female figures and their resistances.

Abstract

The lack of research on literary elements in "babad" is in line with the limited study of Islamic elements within this genre. This research aims to analyze the Javanese poets' depictions of Islam in "Babad Tanah Jawi" and "Babad Giyanti." The study operates under the assumption that "babad" as literary works can allegorically create a contested space where Islam interacts with other traditions. A qualitative paradigm with a comparative structural approach is employed in this study, focusing on the narratives that shape the author's understanding of Islam in the 18th century. The findings of this research reveal that the court poet's portrayal of Islam in "Babad Tanah Jawi" shares similarities with another work in the same genre, "Babad Giyanti." These commonalities encompass the utilization of Islamic verses in the "bhabuka" text and "asmaul husna," the depiction of "walisongo's" role, the practice of "tawajjuh," moral Islamic teachings, and the political positioning characterized by ambivalence and negotiation among different traditions.

Abstract

Since the fall of Suharto in May 1998, women's involvement in literature has increased rapidly, causing a rush of feminist themes and content in literary works in this period. However, the literary works of women writers, even female feminists, are still unable to escape the tendency to objectify women. This study will show how women are positioned as objects of the voyeuristic scopophilia and fetishistic scopophilia of men in the Abidah El Khalieqy’s Perempuan Berkalung Sorban and Geni Jora and Ratih Kumala’s Tabula Rasa and Gadis Kretek. This study is descriptive qualitative. Data collection techniques were carried out using the literature study method, namely by reading carefully and thoroughly the four material object novels. Collected data will be analyzed using Male Gaze Theory by Laura Mulvey. The results of this study show that in the four novels, women consistently manifest as objects of the voyeuristic scopophilia and fetishistic scopophilia of men. This finding can be seen in the voyeuristic relationship between Samsudin-Annisa in Perempuan Berkalung Sorban, Zakky-Lola in Geni Jora, Idroes-Roemaisa in Gadis Kretek; as well as in the Galih-Krasnaya fetishistic relationship in Tabula Rasa. As voyeuristic objects, women bodies are degraded as appropriate territory to be conquered by men; while as a fetishistic object, women are constructed as a "perfect product" that functions to satisfy men's visual desires.

Abstract

Since the fall of Suharto in May 1998, women's involvement in literature has increased rapidly, causing a rush of feminist themes and content in literary works in this period. However, the literary works of women writers, even female feminists, are still unable to escape the tendency to objectify women. This research will show that in the works of female feminist writers, female characters are still displayed as objects of the reader’s male gaze. Four novels will be studied, namely Perempuan Berkalung Sorban and Geni Jora by Abidah El Khalieqy, and Tabula Rasa and Gadis Kretek by Ratih Kumala. This study is descriptive qualitative. Data collection techniques were carried out using the literature study method, namely by reading carefully and thoroughly the four material object novels. Collected data will be analyzed using the Male Gaze Theory by Laura Mulvey. According to the Male Gaze Theory, women are constantly looked at, watched, and displayed, with a certain appearance that has a strong visual and sexual influence so that they are referred to as to-be-looked-at-ness. The results of this study show that in the four novels, there are two repeated patterns, that consistently place women as objects of the reader’s male gaze, namely (1) the exposure of women's intimate organs in an erotic context and (2) beautiful and detailed descriptions of women's faces and bodies.
