This study attempts to explain and dissect the position of queer femininity in the gender order constellation in the context of queer in Indonesia, exploring the position of queer femininity on the Batas web series. Analysis of multimodal discourse from the perspective of Kress and van Leeuwen with terminologies; representational meaning, interactive meaning and compositional meaning, shows that queer femininity discourse within Batas explains the shifting and blurring of boundaries between subject-object and active-passive which always refers to rigid masculine and feminine binary. Queer femininity discourse in Batas shows that femininity is not monolithic. A queer perspective can provide a subversive position, negotiate and resist the dominant discourse. On the other hand, it shows the idealized codes of heterosexual discourse, patriarchy and media. Keywords: Queer, Femininity, Discourse, Multimodal, Webseries

Learning languages is inevitably related to one’s learning culture and patterns. Despite the existence of different language learning strategies in Indonesia, students’ achievements in general show unsatisfying facts. Several learning patterns have the potential to stymie foreign-language learning at particular educational levels. Those learning patterns are the accumulation of a long traditions and practices in teaching and learning of foreign languages. This study examined the practices of teaching and learning French as a foreign language at two universities in Indonesia. These institutions were selected based on their approaches to teaching and learning the language; one employs a pedagogic approach, while the other applies a generalist approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with nine students and six lecturers, as well as observation of four classes between March 2016 and October 2017. The data were subsequently selected and analyzed with a didactic of foreign language methodology. The methodology was based on a post structural paradigm with an emphasis on intertextuality and interdiscoursivity. This method implied the approach to discourse analyses referred to the French perspective. Results from the analysis showed that the universities tended to teach French with a repetitive and uniform approach. The most prominent didactic technique was rote memorization through mnemonics, which permeated almost all aspects of learning the foreign language. The failure to combine this technique with other learning strategies stymied students' efforts to learn the language.

This paper is to figure out R. Ng. Yasadipura I’s poe(li)tical imagination of Islam in Babad Tanah Jawi. The ‘politics’ is defined not merely as instrumental utility, but intertwined with ‘poetics’, an aesthetic strategy which allegorically unveils an interpretation of the undecidability of Islam as central Islam or peripheral Islam, as Arabia Islam or Javanese Islam. Based on the biographical and structural approaches, this article attempts to analyze textual, ideological, and religious traces of this 18th century Javanese Muslim bhujangga and its relation to the way he describes Islam in Babad Tanah Jawi. Yasadipura I is a political subject, since he describes Islam not merely as a religious consensus, but also dissensus to other identities. This dissensus is partly a logical consequence of—using Jacques Rancière’s term—Yasadipura I’s ‘class migration’, ranging from Muslim student (santri) from Kedu, royal advisor (menteri) of Surakarta court, to prolific writer and translator of Hindu-Buddhist kakawin and Islamic Malay suluk.

This article is to figure out how Javanese power succession has archetypal structures and relational systems in Babad Tanah Jawi, representing that the past is prophetic prologomena for the future. Using Lévi-Strauss’s structural anthropology of myth as a methodological approach, this study attempts to analyze the relational systems of successive power of Javanese characters (rulers) from pre-Majapahit to early Mataram in Babad Tanah Jawi and to interpret symbols of the prophetic divine during the periods of different Javanese reigns. This study has found that Javanese dynastic succession has been characterized by archetypal structures, in which the Javanese rulers commonly passed through identical phases of life-journeys, ranging from getting divination from fortune-teller (prophecy), getting out of the origins (exodus), to getting political recognition to be the next ruler (legitimacy). This system argues that the mythological prophecy in Babad Tanah Jawi is political because it prevails the logic of the Javanese worldview (weltanschauung) and the precondition of mystical and political legitimacy for Javanese rulers. The narratives of prophetic symbols, in which the different Javanese rulers had been involved in similar forms and structures, also imply the political dimension of prophecy representing the power of their reigns.

The practice of the body in contemporary dance is always marked by novelty and invention. For Indonesian choreographers, contemporary dance is a practice of negotiation that brings the influence of tradition from the past into contemporary body. This paper is intended to reveal the practice of body negotiation in Wajah (2013), a dance work of Hartati, an Indonesian choreographer of Minangkabau descent who is known for her progressive dance works. It is one of Hartati’s dance work which reflect her background as a choreographer embodied two different traditions, namely the Minangkabau tradition and the urban Jakarta. The non-linear experience of the body became the foundation of Hartati’s creativity in the creation of his contemporary works. Therefore, Wajah is an experimental dance, a result of negotiation which bring together the influence of Minangkabau dance tradition based on silat with another influences like balet and daily movements into contemporary bodies. By applying the perspective of embodiment, this paper analysed the performative text as well as the negotiation practice in the making process of dance. This practice has resulted an extra daily technique with moment making orientation.

The transvestite often become the main character in the literature. One of the writers who present the transvestite is Parange Anaranggana through Mbojo Mambure (later shorten as MM) novel. MM is a realist literature based on social reality in the Bima district. Bima’s people are still shackled inside binary gender, which is the label between men to masculinity and women to feminine. Meanwhile, non-binary gender gets several deficient labels from the local community. In the MM, the transvestite is often get verbal violence and shackled into social discourse. This situation makes them want to get out of the construction built by society. The purpose of this study is to explain several performativities of the transvestite entity amid heteronormative idealism society. This study uses Judith Butler’s performativity theory. Butler explains performativity is some of the discursive practice which generates or assign discourse production. The method in this study is qualitative, which explains there are transvestites who express gender through some performances or actions, appearance and conversation. The transvestite wants to show they could live together with society. Second, Parange Anaranggana described the transvestite who come back to initial identity. Two transvestites experience ambivalence inside themselves. Third, the description of transvestite who come back to initial identity confirms that they could not change stigma in society. Nevertheless, the transvestite could represent a new point of view that Bima has a variety of gender. Keywords: gender, the transvestite, performativities, Bima.

Traumatic events such as the Holocaust transcend through generations. Hirsch strengthens this argument by saying that post-memory is a study of the structure of intergenerational and trans-generational memory transmission in the form of traumatic knowledge and experiences. This study raises the meaning of memory transmission in the Dora Bruder novel by Patrick Modiano. The method used in this article is the content analysis of the story. The data are collected form of sentences that describe the meaningful forms of memory transmission. There are three interpretations from the results of memory transmission. They are the narrator’s interpretation of a location as signifiers of the incommensurability of return, the narrator’s interpretation as an agent and actor of allo-identification, and the emergence of a desire to reject the act of forgetting. Analysis using post-memory illustrates that the generation of heirs to the traumatic memories inherits various challenged and debated questions, intending to expose and retell that story to the public.

The study aims to explore power relations and social classes as the reflections of the masculine ideology of the author in the novel Pengakuan Pariyem by Linus Suryadi AG. The theories implemented in the study are van Dijk’s power relations and social classes theory and Connell’s masculinity theory. The study is qualitative descriptive and applies the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) method, used to dismantle the ideology that is produced and reproduced through the language within the novel. The research data are lingual units that indicate power relations and social classes which simultaneously reflect the notion of masculinity. The results of the study are as follows. First, Pariyem as the central character in the novel lives within a hierarchical and dualistic Javanese society. Her submission as the babu (housemaid) of a priyayi (noble) family does not only lead Pariyem to be dominated symbolically, but also legitimizes the priyayi (aristocrats) power over wong cilik (commoners). It is reinforced by the representations of the priyayis’ world views in terms of culture, aristocracy, bureaucracy, and education orientation. It shows that priyayis are culturally dominant. Secondly, since Pariyem is a character created by a male author, her behaviors and actions reflect the ideology of masculinity. Rather than voicing women, the power relations that Pariyem experiences through the events constructed in the novel show that she embodies the masculine ideology, or masculinity.
