Abstract

This study analyzes children's phonological development in acquiring Arabic as a second language through a psycholinguistic approach. Arabic phonology presents high complexity, involving distinctive sounds not found in a child's native language, such as hijaiyah letters. Literature reviews reveal that phonological skills are influenced by internal factors, such as biological abilities and innate mechanisms (Language Acquisition Device), as well as external factors, including learning environments and teaching methods. Findings highlight key challenges in pronouncing hijaiyah letters, which can be addressed through multisensory approaches, the use of educational technology, and supportive learning environments. This study also emphasizes the importance of integrating phonology and semantics on arabic teaching. Holistic and adaptive learning strategies are recommended to effectively support Arabic language acquisition.

Abstract

Background: In today’s era, where critical thinking and problem-solving are vital competencies, the integration of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) into educational resources, particularly textbooks, has become an important benchmark for quality learning. Aims: This study aims to identify HOTS exercises in Arabic textbooks of Madrasah Aliyah class X published by Quadra in 2022 in terms of Bloom's revised taxonomy theory at the cognitive level of C4, or Analysing, C5, Evaluating, and C6 Creating. Methods: This research employs document analysis techniques (content analysis) within a qualitative descriptive approach to examine the object in depth using primary data. The researcher directly observed the book's content and analysed the HOTS elements in the exercise questions. These were then categorised according to the levels of the revised Bloom's Taxonomy, and conclusions were drawn based on the classifications. Results: The results reveal that although HOTS elements are present in each theme, they are relatively few. The distribution shows C4 (2.4%), C5 (5.2%), and C6 (9.1%), indicating a predominance of LOTS (Lower Order Thinking Skills) over HOTS. Implications: The findings imply the need for improvement and development of question exercises in Arabic textbooks to include aspects of higher order thinking skills (HOTS), especially at the C4 (analyze), C5 (evaluate), and C6 (create) levels, in order to support more critical, analytical, and creative learning in accordance with the demands of the 21st century curriculum.

Abstract

The rising demand for standardized Arabic language proficiency tests, especially for international institutions like Al-Azhar University in Egypt, underscores the need to evaluate current assessment tools for validity and global alignment. This study analyzes the TOAFL Muqarrar Taḥdīd Mustawā textbook using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to assess its suitability for testing the language skills of prospective students of Al-Azhar University in Egypt. Employing a descriptive qualitative method with quantitative data estimation, the study examined the number of questions, their distribution across language skills (listening, reading, writing, grammar), difficulty levels, and CEFR classification (A1–C2). Findings show that most items are concentrated at the intermediate levels (B1–B2), with limited coverage of advanced levels (C1–C2). Additionally, the distribution of skills is uneven, and questions lack integration within realistic contexts. The study recommends enhancing content diversity, incorporating higher-order thinking and critical reasoning tasks, and improving the integration of skills to align more closely with CEFR standards. This research offers a structured evaluation model for Arabic language testing materials, providing a systematic approach to analyze test content and language proficiency alignment. The study recommends aligning local Arabic language assessments with international frameworks, such as the CEFR, to enhance students’ academic readiness and competitiveness in global academic contexts.

Abstract

This article aims to explore the phonology of the Arabic language, its relationship with psycholinguistics, and how the processing of Arabic phonemes occurs in the human brain. Further, it delves into the influence of the phonological system on both language comprehension and production, the challenges faced by non-native speakers in learning Arabic, and effective pedagogical approaches for teaching it. This study incorporates both theoretical frameworks and empirical research to examine the intricate relationship between phonological aspects, cognitive processes, and Arabic language acquisition. The article underscores the significance of mastering phonology as a foundational skill for effective communication in Arabic, both spoken and written and highlights the importance of integrating phonetic-based strategies into language learning. This comprehensive approach is crucial for developing a systematic, logical, and contextually relevant understanding of Arabic in psycholinguistic terms.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of deep learning in Arabic language education at Madrasah Aliyah (MA) in Indonesia. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were obtained through library research and in-depth interviews with five Arabic teachers from different madrasah. The study identified five key instructional strategies applied by teachers: critical discussion, problem-solving, project-based learning (PjBL), student presentations, and the integration of digital tools and AI-based applications such as Kahoot and Quizizz. Critical discussion was consistently implemented across all madrasah, while the adoption of other strategies varied depending on institutional context and teacher readiness. Student responses toward interactive and technology-supported strategies were generally positive, demonstrating increased engagement and participation. Nevertheless, several challenges hinder optimal implementation, including limited technological infrastructure, rigid curricula, insufficient professional training, and assessment practices dominated by objective tests and lower-order thinking skills (LOTS). Authentic, project-based, and reflective assessments remain underutilized, resulting in a misalignment with the constructive alignment principle and limiting the comprehensive evaluation of learning outcomes. The findings suggest that while deep learning principles have begun to take root in Arabic language teaching at MA, achieving their full potential requires targeted interventions in infrastructure development, teacher capacity building, and the alignment of assessment practices with higher-order learning objectives.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the limited number of critical studies on regional songs as representations of social and cultural realities within local communities, particularly in Bangka. The popular song “Yok Miak” in this region contains narratives of collective identity, cultural values, and power relations that have yet to be thoroughly examined in academic discourse. Therefore, this research aims to reveal the social representations and cultural dynamics of Bangka society embedded in the song “Yok Miak” by employing Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis model. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data consists of the song's lyrics, with sources obtained from textual documents, informal interviews with local cultural figures, and observation of the social context in Bangka. Data collection techniques include documentation, participatory observation, and open interviews, while data analysis is based on Van Dijk’s analytical framework covering macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure. The findings indicate that the song not only conveys local values such as mutual cooperation and social responsibility but also reflects resistance to external cultural influences and efforts to preserve Bangka Malay identity. The song functions as an ideological medium that reinforces collective awareness through discursive strategies that emphasize positive self-representation and the cultural values embedded within the community.

Abstract

Lancang Kuning is one of the Malay cultural heritages that embodies values of leadership. As part of oral tradition, this song serves not only as entertainment but also as a medium for conveying social and moral messages. This study aims to analyze the meaning of leadership in Malay culture as reflected in the lyrics of Lancang Kuning using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model. The method employed is qualitative descriptive with text analysis and literature review techniques. The analysis follows Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework: (1) textual analysis, which explores the language structure, metaphors, and symbolism in the lyrics; (2) discursive practice analysis, which examines how the song is used within Malay society to reinforce leadership values; and (3) social practice analysis, which investigates the relevance of the song in the context of contemporary Malay leadership. The findings reveal that Lancang Kuning represents an ideal form of leadership in Malay culture through the symbols of the helmsman as the leader, the rudder as policy, and the storm as challenges faced in leadership. The song emphasizes the importance of wise and knowledgeable leaders to ensure the ship (society) does not sink into uncertainty. The main contribution of this study lies in its reinforcement of discourse studies by highlighting oral cultural heritage as a form of social construction that conveys local leadership values. Furthermore, the research enriches the understanding of leadership dynamics in Malay culture and opens space for further exploration of cultural texts as reflections of a society’s social and ideological structures.
