Abstract

Abstract

Many experts argue that the digital divide has shifted from a gap in access to a gap in the skill to use information and communication technology (ICT). However, some people still have difficulties in getting access to ICT despite the advancement and increasing access and affordability of technology. Reflecting on this problem, this study aimed at finding out whether the digital divide between the lecturers and students of English as a Foreign Language existed and in what aspects the digital divide happened. This research was quantitative, with the data collected through an online survey involving 12 lecturers and 88 students in their third year. The findings revealed that both the gap in access and the gap in use existed between both groups. The result calls for the attention of the stakeholders and policymakers on the improvement of the quality of access to ICT as well as on the advancement in the use of technology, especially for the teachers so that they can keep up with the younger generation.

Abstract

In acquiring the second language, children will use their first language knowledge as a base in their attempt of using a new language. This phenomenon is called language interference. This study aimed at identifying specific instances of language interference conducted by a bilingual child during her study in an international school. The subject was a 5-year-old Japanese child who was acquiring Indonesian as her second language. This study was a case study using descriptive qualitative research method. Data collection was done through observation, interview and note taking. Furthermore, the data in the form of utterances in Indonesian interfered by Japanese were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the most common type of language interference occurred was phonological interference (16 examples), followed by lexical error (4 words) and grammatical error (5 sentences). In short, in this case, Japanese phonological interference with Indonesian pronunciation occurred more frequently than lexical error and grammatical error.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the interlanguage production by Indonesian EFL students in their English compositions. Interlanguage describes the language produced by second or foreign language learners when learning the target language. Forty college students majoring in English for tourism industry were the subjects in this study. In collecting the data, the students were asked to write a recount text with a topic "an experience of visiting a hotel” through a guided writing exercise. The framework of error analysis and interlanguage analysis were used in analyzing the data. The result shows that the students’ interlanguage production is influenced by both Indonesian language as their native language (NL) and English as the target language (TL). The influences were found in both lexical and grammatical forms. This study implies that in learning a foreign language, errors are made by students and by knowing the errors, teachers and tutors can apply appropriate strategies and materials to enhance learning.

Abstract

Ideologies are contested through discourses; thus, textbooks can be a fertile ground for implanting the prevalence of women's marginalization in society, or they can also be used for deconstructing the ideology. The present study aims to provide a general map of how English as a foreign language reflects gendered stereotypes. The study was library research that used the results of previous studies to answer the research questions. Using George's method, the study chose thirty articles published in 2010 - 2021, then critically reviewed. The critical reading was continued with mapping the results of the studies, and their arguments on gender stereotypes included English as Foreign Language textbooks worldwide. The review revealed that there had been prevalent marginalization of women in English textbooks reflected through the depiction of women as less dominant, inferior than men, primarily domestic, generally weak, powerless, voiceless, and passive. Such male prevalence was also found in Indonesian EFL textbooks. Many previous studies admit that male prevalence and women marginalization in EFL textbooks reflect reality in society. Nevertheless, the present study takes the standpoint that calls for the utilization of textbooks to deconstruct gendered binary oppositions that marginalize women by deliberately designing textbooks that impart awareness about gender equity.

Abstract

This study relates the discussion of discourse markers to their functions from a social context. It aims to identify discourse markers and analyze their function to construct a social situation in Steve Jobs’ speech delivered at Stanford Commencement Address. To analyze the data in this study, the researchers used a qualitative descriptive method. This study showed that the dominant discourse markers used were connective, followed by cause result, temporal adverb, and marker of response, respectively, in which the last marker was the least used. Furthermore, all discourse markers functioned to gain coherent message delivery in the speech by considering the “setting and scene," "participants," "ends,” “act sequence,” “key,” “instrumentalities,” “norms of interaction,” and “genre,” all of which were shortened in the acronym of “speaking.”  Finally, based on its social situation, the present study is expected to broaden the understanding of discourse markers in a particular text.

Abstract

Integration of technology in the teaching and learning process brings innovation where a learning process can be conducted virtually despite time and place boundaries. Online learning as the integration of learning and technology is used as the primary strategy to continue the teaching and learning process due to the Covid-19 outbreak. This study aims to analyze student perceptions of online learning before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The results showed that the students had negative and positive perceptions of online learning before and during the pandemic. Before the pandemic, the students emphasized exploring the materials, while the students emphasized flexibility in learning during the pandemic. Meanwhile, negative perceptions are shown through the loss of direct communication between teachers and students. During the pandemic, students emphasized the flexibility aspect of the online learning mode. However, negative perceptions also emerged, namely the abundance of online tasks and the difficulties of using e-learning. Various challenges of online learning were also found during the pandemic compared to before the outbreak. For example in addition to inadequate internet connections and gadgets, anxiety problems due to the workload and less appropriate learning plan also arose. It can be seen that online learning before and during the outbreak experienced dynamics, so teachers and students must be encouraged to be more adaptive in dealing with changes in their learning.

Abstract

Recent studies have argued for the use of comic strips in language teaching, while concerns with the challenges in its application are also frequently highlighted. Using George’s (2008) model of literature review, the present study will elaborate on the use of comic strips as a medium of learning, its benefits, and the challenges in its implementation. The data sources are research articles related to the implementation of comic strips for language teaching, published in reputable international journals and accredited national journals from 2011 to 2020. The review reveals that previous studies have proven that comic strips in language teaching can promote students’ vocabulary, improve students' grammar competence, support the students' reading skills, and help the students who lack writing skills. However, these studies also show concerns on challenges in implementing comic strips in language teaching, such as its relevance, the choices of the topics, and how it cannot support spoken skills as much as it would support the written skills. It implies that while comic strips can be good media for teaching language, teachers should also find strategies in overcoming the challenges that may occur during its implementation.

Abstract

Bilingualism is a widely discussed phenomenon due to its rising trend in this globalization era. Many negative conclusions about bilingualism have been met with positive outcomes from recent studies. This study was library research aimed at exploring the advantages of bilingualism in terms of cognitive, socio-emotional, as well as academic and career advantages of bilingualism as proven by previous studies published in reputable international journals indexed by Scopus or WoS from 2015 to 2020. The critical review revealed that bilingualism provides cognitive, socio-emotional, academic and career advantages. In terms of cognitive advantages, bilingualism contributes to better executive functioning and working memory and delaying the cognitive aging disease. Socio-emotionally, bilingualism promotes self-confidence, empathy, friendliness, communicative skills, and a more open-minded attitude toward cultural differences, respect toward speakers of other languages. Academically, bilinguals show higher achievement, while career-wise, there is a high preference for companies to hire bilinguals and a high possibility of getting promotions. These conclusions imply that early exposure to bilingualism provides opportunities for children to develop their cognitive and socio-emotional better that contribute to their academic and career.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the students' interlingual and intralingual interferences of Tourism Study Program at a State University in North Bali. A qualitative approach was applied by examining the students' final projects of English writing for the academic year 2020/2021.  In this case study, 15 final projects were chosen using the purposive sampling technique. Data collection was done through reading, note-taking, classifying, and describing. The findings revealed that the most frequent interlingual form produced by the students was using Indonesian Syntax Pattern, while the intralingual form was the simplifications. Therefore, interlingual and intralingual interferences were found in the students' final project. There are two implications of this study, i.e. (i) teachers need to enhance their pedagogy for the teaching and learning sessions, particularly English grammar, (ii) students should learn more the English grammatical rules, which they can access many sources to learn English through watching a movie, listening to songs, talking with native speakers, reading novels and magazines.Abstrak:Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis interlingual dan intralingual mahasiswa Program Studi Pariwisata di salah satu Universitas Negeri di Bali Utara.
