Abstract

This study aims to analyze the social-emotional development of elementary school-age children involved in group play. The core indicator of social-emotional learning is the use of the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) theory, which studies children's social-emotional development, including self-awareness, self-management, relationship-building skills, and responsible decision-making. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. This research involved grade 4 students at MI Muhammadiyah Trangsan Gatak. Data was collected through observation, interviews, and documentation methods. This research found that group games such as gobak sodor, naga snake, and sarong volleyball make a significant contribution to students' social-emotional development. Through interactions in these games, children learn about self-confidence, self-regulation skills, positive social behavior, and responsible decision-making.   Keywords: Social Emotional Development, Basic Education, Group Games

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the application of the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) method based on cultural exploration in improving the emotional intelligence of elementary school students. Methodology: This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experiment design. The research subjects were fourth grade students of SD Muhammadiyah 1 Ketelan Surakarta, which were divided into an experimental class of 19 stu-dents by being given treatment through the cultural exploration-based Teams Games Tournament (TGT) method and a control class of 21 students using conventional learning methods. Results: The N-Gain test results showed that the experimental class obtained an aver-age N-Gain score of 76.5520, which was classified as "Effective," while the control class only achieved an average score of 32.9558, which was catego-rized as "Not Effective." These results indicate that the cultural exploration-based Teams Games Tournament (TGT) method is significantly effective in improving students' emotional intelligence. Applications/Originality/Value: This study also contributes to the use of game-based learning strategies as an effort to develop emotional intelligence among elementary school students.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to determine the effectiveness of educational games in fostering digital literacy to enhance healthy social interaction among elementary school students. By leveraging digital game-based learning, the research examines whether gamemediated activities can stimulate student engagement and promote constructive peer relationships. Methodology: Employing a quantitative quasi-experimental design with pretest–posttest control groups, the study involved two fifthgrade classes at an elementary school: class VA (experimental) and class VB (control). Both groups completed a pretest measuring healthy social interaction, after which the experimental group engaged in a series of educational game sessions while the control group followed regular instruction. A posttest was administered to both groups, and data were analyzed using the General Linear Model and normalized gain (N-gain) to assess learning effectiveness. Results: The experimental group (VA) achieved an N-gain of 79.16%, categorizing it as highly effective in improving healthy social interaction. In contrast, the control group (VB) recorded an N-gain of 30.79%, indicating a less effective outcome. These results demonstrate that students who learned via educational games exhibited significantly greater improvements in cooperative behaviors, communication skills, and mutual respect. Applications/Originality/Value: By confirming that educational game-based interventions can effectively cultivate healthy social interaction, this study provides a novel contribution to the literature on digital literacy and social skills development. Educators and curriculum designers can adopt game-centered modules to simultaneously build technological fluency and interpersonal competencies. Furthermore, the research highlights a previously underexplored linkage between educational gaming and social well-being, offering new directions for both pedagogical practice and future studies.

Abstract

Purpose: This study investigates how YouTube use influences two key aspects of student self‐development—self‐awareness and self‐ management—among upper‐elementary learners, aiming to clarify whether YouTube, as a digital‐literacy medium, facilitates or hinders these psychological competencies. Methodology: A quantitative correlational design was employed with a randomly selected sample of 215 fourth‑ to sixth‑grade students from various elementary schools in Colomadu District, Karanganyar Regency. Data were collected via a 5‑point Likert–scale questionnaire, supplemented by classroom records and direct observations. Hypothesis testing involved independent‑samples t‑tests and simple linear regression analyses (using the unstandardized B coefficient) to assess the linear relationships between YouTube usage (independent variable) and each outcome—self‐awareness and self‐management (dependent variables). Results: Analysis revealed that YouTube use did not exert a statistically significant effect on students’ self‐awareness scores. In contrast, YouTube use showed a significant but negative relationship with self‐management (p < 0.05), indicating that higher levels of YouTube engagement were associated with lower self‐management competencies among the surveyed learners. Applications/Originality/Value: These findings contribute to digital‐literacy research by distinguishing YouTube’s differential impacts on distinct psychological skills. Educators and parents can use this insight to develop guided‐use protocols and targeted interventions— such as integrating self‐management training into digital‐media lessons—to mitigate negative effects. Future studies might build on this work by exploring which specific YouTube content or usage patterns most strongly predict self‐management deficits, thereby informing more nuanced policy and pedagogical recommendations.
