Abstract

The development of 21st-century education emphasizes the importance of problem-solving and communication skills. However, empirical evidence regarding the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into problem-oriented project-based learning remains limited. This study aimed to examine the effect of a problem-oriented project-based learning model assisted by artificial intelligence on students’ problem-solving and communication skills. A quasi-experimental method with a non-randomized pretest–posttest control group design was employed, involving three groups: an AI-assisted problem-oriented project-based learning group, a problem-oriented project-based learning group, and a regular learning group. The participants consisted of 90 eleventh-grade students from SMA Negeri 1 Singosari, Malang Regency, Indonesia, equally distributed across the three groups. Data were collected using a problem-solving skills test and a communication skills questionnaire and analyzed using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). The results revealed a significant effect of the learning model on students’ problem-solving skills (p < 0.05) and communication skills (p < 0.05). Students taught using the AI-assisted problem-oriented project-based learning model achieved significantly higher scores than those in the regular learning group, while the difference between the AI-assisted and non-assisted problem-oriented project-based learning groups was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). In conclusion, the problem-oriented project-based learning model assisted by artificial intelligence effectively enhances students’ problem-solving and communication skills. These findings imply that integrating AI into project-based learning can serve as an effective instructional strategy to support the development of essential 21st-century skills in secondary education.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of the Empowered through Edupreneur program at SMA Negeri 3 Sidoarjo, designed to address entrepreneurial development challenges among high school students in Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia. The research identified key barriers, including untapped entrepreneurial potential, underdeveloped student ventures, the lack of school-facilitated entrepreneurship programs, and the absence of designated entrepreneurship areas. Through a systematic approach involving entrepreneurship socialization, personal mentoring, community formation, and venue provision, the program was implemented in two phases: a Community Service Workshop with 100 twelfth-grade students and a Business Activity Monitoring program with 15 student business groups. The methodology employed observations, interviews, hands-on workshops, and continuous mentoring to foster entrepreneurial skills and knowledge. Results demonstrated significant success with the formation of 10 initial student business groups, which expanded to 15 active ventures across various sectors including snacks, handicrafts, and digital services. Students showed improved understanding of basic business concepts, cash flow management, and profit–loss calculations. The word cloud analysis of students’ perceptions regarding entrepreneurship needs and challenges shows that they have adequate knowledge of the field. However, challenges remain in digital promotion capabilities, time management, and product innovation. The program’s effectiveness was evidenced by increased entrepreneurial enthusiasm, the development of locally inspired business ideas, and enhanced student confidence in business planning. The study concludes that targeted entrepreneurship education, combined with continuous mentoring and institutional support, can effectively nurture young entrepreneurs. It recommends sustained collaboration between educational institutions, universities, and local businesses to transform student initiatives into sustainable enterprises that contribute to regional economic development.

Abstract

Work in the 21st century demands strong critical thinking skills. However, high school students still exhibit relatively low levels of critical thinking ability. Integrating learning journals into the 5E Learning Cycle model represents an educational innovation that enhances these skills. This study compares the critical thinking abilities of students in experimental and control classes using a quantitative quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group. Two classes were involved: an experimental group (35 students) and a control group (34 students), each receiving different treatments. The sampling technique used was simple random sampling. Data were collected using 10 questions based on Ennis's five aspects of critical thinking. The instrument was validated and showed a reliability coefficient of 0.725. The results showed a difference in critical thinking scores between the control and experimental classes. The experimental class, which used the 5E Learning Cycle model supported by learning journals, achieved higher outcomes. This was confirmed by an independent t-test, which yielded a p-value (<0.001) and a higher post-test mean score in the experimental class (26.05). A Cohen’s d value of 2.39 indicated a large effect size, while an N-Gain score of 0.95 showed that the intervention fell into the high category.
