Abstract

STEM PBL emphasizes integrating several aspects of science, such as technology and design, where in this aspect, there will be an innovative engineering process based on science and mathematics that aims to carry out innovation and problem-solving. The research design is a non-equivalent pre-test and post-test control group design—the tests conducted by pre-test and post-test of the learning process in experiment and control groups. The experiment and the control group were conducted in two classes with different treatments; the experiment class used the PBL STEM model, while the control class was treated using a conventional model. The results present that the average percentage of the student’s problem-solving in the experiments class increased after implementing the STEM PBL model. More students were experts in all aspects of problem-solving in the post-test compared with the pre-test.

Abstract

Nearly one in five pupils in OECD nations do not possess the fundamental knowledge and abilities necessary to get by in today's communities (OECD, 2019), which is a sign of exclusion. There is an unfairness in that students from low socioeconomic origins are twice as likely to be low performers, suggesting that social or personal factors prevent them from fulfilling their educational potential. This study intends to investigate the achievement of the 21st Century Biology Skills Test (21CBST) and to compare it to students’ level of socio-economic status. The result (TIMSS) (2015) revealed that Indonesian students failed to achieve minimum standards in Science and Mathematics, with 33.3% achievement in science and 35% in mathematics for content domain and 33,3% in the cognitive domain. Comprising 37 multiple choice items, the 21st Century Biology Skills Test (21C-BST) includes representatives from five domains which are; i) Digital Age Literacy, ii) Inventive Thinking, iii) Effective Communication, iv) High Productivity, and v) Religion, Health and Civic. The respondents comprised 210 form students who took biology subject in school. The study revealed that students from high socio-economic status scored higher than their counterparts from low socioeconomic status. This paper concludes with some practical suggestions for improving students’ 21st-century skills, particularly within the context of biology teaching and learning.

Abstract

An e-module is a learning media designed to assist students in discovering and solving problems independently and can be used practically and flexibly. The purpose of this paper is to produce a PBL-based integrated disaster mitigation e-module on environmental change material that is valid, practical and effective. The e-module development used the development model by (Lee & Owens, 2004). E-modules were validated by material experts, learning media experts, biology education experts and practitioners. Furthermore, the e-modules were tested on students in individual, small group and field trials. In the field trial, the e-module was applied in biology learning. Based on the N-Gain test score between pretest and posttest, it is known that the experimental class is in the high category and the control class is in the medium-high category. The results prove that the e-module developed is valid, practical and effective, so it can be used in learning activities that can improve students' critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze classroom interactions in the reflective teaching practice based on learning objectives and types of interactions, types of student questions and answers, and gender and student achievement. Teacher-student interactions, particularly in reflective learning, have been discussed in depth in urban schools. However, few studies reported the interactions between teachers and students in remote areas. The data collected for this cross-sectional study are part of a broader longitudinal research project. The participants comprised 46 students and 4 teachers from 3 remote schools representing 3 districts in Indonesia. The results showed that most of the teacher-student interactions in reflective teaching practice contained feedback that focused on students' correct and incorrect answers yet rarely discussed how students got answers. Teacher reflection was evaluative by discussing matters related to learning objectives. While reflections have not yet been related to the teacher’s method. This study also reported that gender and achievement did not affect the reflective teaching practice.
