Abstract

Science teachers are the main actors in developing students’ action competence for sustainability (ACS) in the future. Considering that the majority of teachers and prospective science teachers have a spiritual foundation, the spiritual aspect should be an integral part of the ACS. Therefore, an instrument is needed that can measure the level of ACS that includes aspects of spirituality in it. This study was designed to develop and validate an instrument for prospective science teacher in in the form of action competence for sustainability instrument base on spirituality (ACSIS). The instrument was developed based on previous research findings and focus group discussions involving eleven experts. The factors and internal consistency were examined by involving 634 prospective science teachers in Indonesia. Validity and reliability were tested using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). This study’s results showed 21 questionnaire items (four dimensions) with acceptable internal validity and consistency. The ACSIS is recommended to measure the level of ACS for prospective science teachers, specifically in Indonesia, and countries that have the same characteristics of educational problems and potential.

Abstract

Scientific argumentation skills as an intellectual practice can involve students in constructing and criticizing scientific ideas related to science literacy. The purpose of this study is to find out the scientific argumentation ability of high school students with different conceptual understandings. This study was designed as a survey involving students in grade XII of MIPA SMA Laboratorium UM. The results show that the highest average value of understanding the concept of genetic material was 87,22 and the lowest average value was 69,00. Indicator of scientific argumentation "claims and warrants" have an average value of 67.33; the "counterargument" indicator is 84.89; the "supportive arguments" indicator is 63.75; the "evidence" indicator is 83.19. The most appropriate solution to improve students' scientific argumentation skills is to apply an innovative learning model that involves argumentative dialogue in the classroom. Argumentation Driven Inquiry (ADI) is an argumentation and inquiry-based learning model that can be used as an alternative to empower students' scientific argumentation skills. On the other hand, students with low conceptual understanding scores managed to achieve the category of excellent scientific argumentation: good, enough, less, very little. This condition shows the importance of implementing innovative and argument-inquiry-based learning.

Abstract

This study focuses on the perspective of prospective teachers on the development of self-efficacy during teaching practice in micro teaching and also during real teaching. The problem in this study is what factors influence the development of self-efficacy during micro teaching and real teaching? The purpose of this study is to describe the factors that contribute to the development of self-efficacy during micro teaching and real teaching. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method. The participants of the study were first-year biology teachers who had taken micro teaching courses at college. The instruments used included questionnaires and interview sheets. The results obtained were that during micro teaching, prospective teachers had high self-efficacy in three factors, namely performance experience, other people's experiences, and social support. Meanwhile, after teaching at school (real teaching), the factors that support the development of self-efficacy are physiological and emotional states. In order for self-efficacy to develop well during real teaching, it can be concluded that micro teaching is an efficient technique in improving the self-efficacy of prospective biology teachers. It is necessary to form a learning community in schools that can be used as a forum for teachers to collaborate with each other in finding efficient strategies in teaching. This can support the development of teacher self-efficacy.

Abstract

Complementing science subjects with spirituality components is almost universal and is a significant requirement in religion-based schools. However, integrating spiritual components into science classes is challenging, particularly in inquiry-based problem-solving tasks. In this experiment, we modified inquiry learning and contextual teaching. We tested the efficacy of a combined model called the socio-science spirituality (3S) model on students’ spirituality and science process skills (SPS). Through a quasi-experiment, this learning model was applied in classes addressing the digestive system, additives and addictive chemicals, and the circulatory system. Following the 3S classroom implementation, we compared the mean pre- and post-test scores of the experimental and control groups using the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) test and then assessed the relationship between spirituality and SPS in the classrooms using the Pearson-correlation test. The research found that spirituality and SPS were much higher and more prevalent in the experimental group compared to the control group. In the experimental class, there was also a link between spirituality and SPS. Theoretically, this research finding contributes to spiritual education and the development of SPS skills in science classes simultaneously. This research provides a unique way to prioritize the integration of spirituality in science learning. Practically, the research explain the details of the implementation of spirituality that can be applied to inquiry activities in science classes through the 3S model.

Abstract

The development of education shows the importance of integrating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in schools and preparing teachers who are ready to implement STEM in the classroom. This study aims to describe prospective teachers' perceptions of STEM competencies through the collaborative reflective teaching practice (CRTP) model in micro teaching courses. The method used was qualitative using interview assessment and questionnaire of STEM perception. This study used an experimental design conducted with 3 activities (initial test, teaching practice, and final test). The initial test and final test used a STEM perception questionnaire. Teaching practice in the form of applying the CRTP model which consists of 4 stages, namely plan, simulation, implementation, and reflection. The results of the study describe that STEM competencies develop well with the CRTP model. The questionnaire results showed that 96.2% of respondents strongly agreed that the CRTP model had proven valid for developing STEM competencies of prospective biology teachers. This research contributes to educators who prioritize meaningful learning experiences for prospective biology teachers. The authors suggest that effective STEM competencies should incorporate five main components: i) reflection, ii) collaboration, iii) integration of interdependent STEM disciplines, iv) skills related to STEM disciplines, and v) integrative STEM teaching and learning.
