Abstract

Abstract

Digital transformation in education necessitates new competencies for biology teachers. This study examines the influence of the DECODE model integrated with Cloud Classroom and gender on TPACK-21 and digital literacy among biology education students. Using a quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest nonequivalent control groups, 53 undergraduate students from Universitas Negeri Medan participated in the study. The experimental group (n=26) received the DECODE-Cloud Classroom intervention while the control group (n=27) followed a conventional case study approach. Data collection employed self-report questionnaires, teaching module evaluations, observation sheets, and learning product assessments. MANCOVA analysis revealed that the DECODE-Cloud Classroom model significantly enhanced both TPACK-21 and digital literacy with large effect sizes. Gender showed no significant effect on TPACK-21 but significantly influenced digital literacy development, with male students demonstrating greater improvement in digital security and content creation dimensions, while information and data literacy showed the smallest gap between genders. The interaction between the learning model and gender was not significant for either dependent variable, indicating consistent effectiveness across genders despite varying improvement rates. The findings support implementing the DECODE-Cloud Classroom model in biology teacher preparation programs while considering gender-responsive strategies to optimize digital competency development.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics project-based learning (STEM-PjBL) on the collaborative problem solving (CPS) of preservice teachers (PSTs). The pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group design was employed. A total of 72 PSTs enrolled in plant physiology course participated in this study. Self-assessment and project were used to evaluate PSTs’ CPS skills. Self-assessment scores were analyzed by analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), while project scores were analyzed by the Mann-Whitney U test. The results of self-assessment indicated that STEM-PjBL enhances CPS skills, particularly in social regulation, task regulation, and knowledge building. The results of the team’s problem-solving skills in completing the project did not differ between the two groups. But the result of integrated STEM skills showed that the STEM-PjBL group was better at integrating STEM disciplines into their project. This study highlights the importance of interdisciplinary projects in a PjBL environment that can be adopted by teacher preparation programs for enhancing PSTs’ CPS skills as well as gaining knowledge of STEM integration.

Abstract

Field study is a learning activity that provides authentic experiences to interact directly with animals in an environment. This experience can trigger changes in perspective and internalization of new values, including animal awareness. This study aims to analyze the transformation of students' awareness of animals after participating in a field study. The study used a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study design. The subjects were students of the Biology Education program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Pontianak who had participated in a field study in the Animal Taxonomy, Ecology, and Herpetology courses. Data were collected through open questionnaires and analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The results showed that the field study significantly impacted changes in students' perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors in the context of animal conservation. Through direct interaction with nature and society, the contextual learning process has encouraged students to reflect deeply, reassess old assumptions, and experience personal transformation. Students not only gain a more concrete scientific understanding of endemic species and ecological conditions, but also experience strengthening of the values of empathy, responsibility, and active involvement in environmental issues. This finding aligns with the theory of transformative learning, where the stages of self-examination, critical reflection, and intentional action have been proven to be achieved in the field lecture process

Abstract

Professional education courses such as microteaching are currently placing greater emphasis on reflective activities, particularly in the context of the new paradigm curriculum in Indonesia. The aim of this study is to investigate the ability of prospective teachers to reflect on their microteaching experiences, the common aspects discussed during reflection activities, and the peer feedback provided regarding lesson plan design and implementation within a microteaching setting. The study employs a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design and spans 13 weeks with 122 teacher candidates who participated in a flipped learning setting. Flipped learning was chosen as the instructional model to potentially enhance the level of collaboration in learning activities. Results revealed that flipped learning can indeed foster a collaborative environment among prospective teachers. Further, the most commonly identified aspect appearing in the reflections was the modeling of teaching techniques, outweighing other aspects such as classroom management, learning tools, lesson duration, pedagogical strategies, and student learning processes. These findings offer valuable insights for prospective teachers, particularly regarding feedback and reinforcement practices in microteaching. Moreover, this research suggests that flipped learning could be a promising approach to cultivating these practices. Future studies are recommended to further investigate the potential of different instructional models in enhancing reflection and collaboration among teacher candidates.

Abstract

This community service activity is based on the lack of understanding and ability of high school and junior high school teachers in compiling scientific articles and introducing much more deeply about learning methods using the STEAM approach. In addition, many teachers are still reluctant to publish research results on the grounds that they do not understand the guidelines for compiling scientific articles. This is the basis for the need to carry out this community service activity with the aim of helping high school and junior high school teachers in compiling scientific articles so that later teachers can publish articles that have been made in journals or mass media and are able to apply learning methods with STEAM. The community service activity was carried out in October 2022 at the State University of Malang. The method used is divided into two stages, namely delivering material and mentoring for teachers who want to compile scientific articles according to the reports they have. With this community service activity, it can provide a new knowledge concept for teachers so that they can compile scientific articles, especially from the results of research that has been carried out.
